If OBS is showing black, first find where the picture disappears: in the OBS preview, in a local recording, or only in the YouTube player. That tells you whether to investigate the scene and capture source, OBS output, or YouTube ingestion. Also note your source type—display, window, game, camera, image, or media file—and operating system; the right fix depends on both.
Find where the black screen starts
Check the same scene in OBS, a short local recording, and the YouTube stream or Live Control Room. Do not change several settings at once: isolate the first point where the picture is missing.
- OBS preview is black: Start with the scene, selected source, capture method, permissions, or the input signal.
- Preview is correct but a local recording is black: Check the recording/output path and OBS output configuration.
- Preview and recording look right but YouTube is black or unhealthy: Check encoder output, stream status, errors, and the outbound connection. YouTube recommends checking the encoder and connection when diagnosing delivery issues (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting).
In OBS, confirm the intended scene is active, the source is enabled and visible, and the correct display, window, camera, or media file is selected. Check source order too: an opaque source above the intended picture can cover it. These checks identify common scene-level causes; they cannot determine the cause of a particular failure without knowing the source and setup.
If the OBS preview is black
Display, window, or game capture
Open the source properties and verify the capture method and target. For window capture, make sure the intended application is open and that you selected the right window. For display capture, confirm the correct monitor. For game capture, verify that the game is running and that the selected capture mode matches it. If the source is hidden, disabled, or behind an opaque layer, correct that before changing system-wide graphics settings.

Windows laptops with two GPUs
On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, GPU assignment and display-capture method can affect capture. OBS’s laptop guide describes this as a historical issue and documents a newer Windows capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or later with OBS 27 or later. The guide recommends keeping OBS on the default high-power GPU and, if automatic selection fails, trying the Windows 10 capture method manually (OBS laptop troubleshooting). Because that guidance is dated 2021, check your current Windows and OBS versions and the source’s available properties before applying it. It is not a universal fix for other operating systems or source types.
Camera, image, or media-file source
For a camera, confirm the intended device is selected, connected, and delivering a signal; check that another application is not preventing access. For an image or media file, verify the file path and that the source is visible in the active scene. If the showcase depends on an external video input, inspect that signal path specifically. A capture card or replacement camera is not a general remedy for an unspecified black screen.

If capture works but OBS or YouTube output is black
Preview is good, local recording is black
Make a brief local test recording and check OBS’s recording/output configuration. This branch concerns the output path rather than the source: avoid replacing or reconfiguring a working capture source unless evidence points back to it.
Local recording is good, YouTube is black or unhealthy
Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the preview, stream health, and any error messages. Check that OBS is sending the intended encoder output and that the outbound connection is strong enough for the chosen settings. YouTube’s guidance specifically calls for checking encoder output and connection strength (troubleshooting a live stream). A correct OBS preview alone does not prove YouTube is receiving usable video.

Separate capture problems from performance problems
A black source and a struggling encoder are different problems. If you see stuttering, lag, or an “encoding overloaded” warning, OBS says rendering uses GPU resources. Reduce unnecessary GPU work—for example, simplify the scene or remove heavy browser sources you do not need—and observe whether the symptoms change. OBS also lists running OBS as administrator on Windows as a quick performance troubleshooting step; treat it as a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix for a black capture source (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting).
Meeting OBS’s basic system requirements does not guarantee that a particular machine can stream or record your chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. Actual capability depends on configuration and load, so assess performance during a representative test rather than assuming a computer is sufficient from a requirements list (OBS system requirements).

Test the showcase before relying on the stream
- Use representative content. Preview motion and audio resembling the real product showcase, not only a still desktop. A static image cannot reveal motion or audio problems.
- Check the OBS output. Confirm that the expected picture and sound are present in the preview and a short local recording.
- Use settings that fit the connection. For the RTMP/RTMPS profile described in YouTube’s guidance, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Set bitrate and resolution for the chosen quality and available upload capacity rather than assuming one value fits every connection (YouTube encoder troubleshooting).
- Verify YouTube reception. Before going live, check the Live Control Room preview and health status. While live, watch for errors and confirm the product image and audio remain correct. YouTube also recommends checking event accessibility from the channel or watch page and on mobile devices (YouTube encoder tips).
YouTube documents HLS as an ingestion option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, but it has encoder requirements and higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. It is not a first-line remedy for a black screen; consider it only when the chosen codec or protocol requires it (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting).
