First find out where the timing error begins: inspect the playlist and a local FFmpeg output before changing YouTube ingest settings. If the next item starts late or gaps appear at transitions, the concat demuxer’s duration and stream-compatibility assumptions are prime suspects. If the local output stays synchronized but viewers see a delay, investigate YouTube ingest and network conditions instead. Without your command, input metadata, and a local comparison, there is no single flag that can be identified as the fix.
Identify what “out of sync” means
These symptoms point to different parts of the chain. Note when the error first appears, whether it grows gradually, and whether it recurs at the same file or loop boundary.
- Items start progressively earlier or later: the schedule timeline may be accumulating duration or timestamp error.
- A jump, gap, or pause occurs at one transition: inspect that pair of files, their stream layouts, and their reported durations.
- Audio gradually separates from picture: compare audio and video timing in the source and local output; stream lengths that differ can affect concatenation.
- Only viewer playback is delayed: that may be stream latency—the capture-to-viewer delay—not a playlist clock drifting.
Write down the first affected timestamp and playlist item. This gives you a useful comparison point for the local output and YouTube preview.
Check the playlist inputs and concat timeline
The FFmpeg concat demuxer reads files sequentially as though their packets had been muxed together. It adjusts timestamps globally: the first file starts at zero, and each following file is placed where the preceding one is expected to end. The duration assigned to a file therefore affects the next file’s start. FFmpeg warns that an incorrect duration can cause artifacts; its documented duration directive can override stored duration when the correct duration is known. See the FFmpeg documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare every item, especially around the first bad transition
Inspect the stream layout, codecs, time bases, frame rates, audio sample rates, start timestamps, and reported versus actual duration of each file. Compare the item before the first bad transition with the item after it, then check the rest of the playlist for the same mismatch. The concat demuxer requires inputs to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. Missing audio, differing stream layouts, or incompatible timing can cause failures or artifacts.
Correct duration only when you know the actual value
If metadata reports a duration that is demonstrably wrong, correct it using a value established from the media itself. Do not guess: an inaccurate override can replace one timing error with another. If files are incompatible, prepare or re-encode them to a consistent stream layout and timing format before concatenating. There is no universal conversion command that safely fits every mixture of source files.

Separate real-time pacing from timestamp repair
-re reads input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1). It can pace prerecorded input for real-time output, but it does not repair bad timestamps or duration metadata. FFmpeg’s timestamp options also have distinct effects: -copyts preserves input timestamps rather than sanitizing them, while -start_at_zero shifts timestamps when used with -copyts. Output timestamps may still be affected by frame-rate mode or muxer processing. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and assess these options in the context of your command and FFmpeg version; do not add a stack of flags blindly.
Compare the local output with YouTube Live
- Capture or monitor a local output sample. Compare its audio/video synchronization and item start times with the source playlist. If the error is already there, focus on the inputs, durations, stream compatibility, concat behavior, and timestamp handling.
- Compare the same moment in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. If the local output is sound but YouTube playback is not, check stream-health messages and your encoder and outbound connection.
- Review encoder errors and CPU load, then test outbound internet quality. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the stream directly in the encoder, dashboard errors, CPU load, local archive, and outbound connection.
- Monitor audio and video continuously during a test. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and watching stream-health messages. See encoder settings and testing guidance.
Check YouTube ingest settings after local timing
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance says intervals above four seconds can cause buffering and calls for closed GOP for optimal transcoding. These are compatibility and stream-health checks, not a diagnosis of a playlist’s timestamp or duration error.

Use the bitrate guidance for your ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, and continuous monitoring of audio and video quality. That headroom is a platform recommendation; it does not establish that bandwidth caused a playlist timeline drift.
Common symptoms and next checks
| What you observe | Where to look first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The next file starts late or a gap appears at a repeatable transition | Actual versus reported duration and compatibility of the files on either side | Verify duration and stream layout; normalize incompatible inputs before concatenating. |
| Error grows as the playlist runs | Duration accuracy across items and timestamp behavior | Compare scheduled starts with a local output over time; correct only duration values established from the media. |
| Audio and picture separate locally | Input stream timing, stream layout, and concat result | Inspect the source files and local output before changing YouTube settings. |
| Local output is synchronized, but YouTube playback is not | Encoder stream health, CPU load, and outbound connection | Check Live Control Room messages and follow YouTube’s troubleshooting sequence. |
| Viewers report a delay, but playlist starts remain on schedule | Capture-to-viewer stream latency | Treat the delay separately from playlist schedule drift; latency alone does not show that FFmpeg’s timeline is drifting. |
