First find out where the wrong video appears. If the outgoing feed is wrong, check the encoder’s active source and playlist. If the feed is correct and only a viewer returns to the wrong point or video after pausing, check the YouTube event, player, and DVR behavior. These are different stages, so changing a stream key is not a sensible first fix.
Identify where the wrong video first appears
Separate the encoder’s output from the viewer’s playback. YouTube’s stream key tells an encoder where to send its feed; it does not choose which prerecorded file the encoder plays. Source selection is controlled in the encoder, while DVR and resume behavior concern playback on YouTube. See YouTube Help on stream keys and live settings and the OBS media sources guide.
- Wrong in Live Control Room preview or for multiple viewers: investigate the encoder’s scene, source, file path, or playlist.
- Correct in the preview and archive, but wrong for one viewer after pausing: investigate the event/watch page and player or DVR behavior.
- Starts after a scene change, playlist transition, or reconnect: note that trigger; it helps narrow down which source or playback setting to check.
Write down whether the issue happens after a pause, scene activation, playlist transition, or encoder restart. That timing is useful evidence, not proof of a particular cause.
Check the YouTube event and preview
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and confirm that you have the intended stream or scheduled event selected.
- Check the preview before starting or restarting the broadcast. Confirm both the picture and audio are the intended ones.
- After a test, inspect the local archive if available. If the archive contains the wrong video, the incorrect content was already in the encoder output. If the archive is correct but a viewer sees the wrong video or resume point, focus on the watch page and playback instead. This comparison is a diagnostic inference from YouTube’s guidance to preview the stream and check local archives.
YouTube recommends previewing the feed, monitoring stream quality, and checking local archive files when troubleshooting. Its guides also recommend using a current encoder version and checking the feed in the encoder, CPU load, and outbound connectivity if the encoder appears healthy but delivery is not. See YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guide and YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you use OBS, inspect the media source or playlist
OBS Media Source: one file
- Open the scene that is actually being sent to the stream.
- Open the Media Source properties and verify the file assigned to that source, including its path.
- Check whether Restart playback when source becomes active is enabled. If the source is shown again after a scene change, this option can make that same file start from the beginning.
- Check whether Loop is set as intended. If a different video appears, verify the active scene and file path first; restarting the same source does not by itself explain a different file.
OBS VLC Video: playlist
- Open the VLC Video source and verify the listed files and their order.
- Turn off Shuffle Playlist if the videos must play in a fixed order.
- Check Loop Playlist and the source’s visibility behavior against how the show is meant to run.
- Confirm VLC is installed; OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and requires it.
OBS documents these source controls in its Media Sources guide. For an encoder other than OBS, use that software’s documentation or support and apply the same checks: active source, assigned file, playlist order, and what happens when the source becomes active again.
If only a viewer resumes incorrectly, check YouTube playback
- Confirm the viewer opened the intended live event or watch page, rather than another scheduled stream or a related upload.
- Refresh the page or feed if the displayed progress seems stale, then compare in another supported app or device.
- Check whether the stream is still live and whether the viewer is seeking within its DVR window. Viewers can resume a live DVR stream from where they paused, but YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Limits can also be lower on Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions; viewers cannot seek to a point before the live stream began. Details are in YouTube Help on live DVR.
- For a regular uploaded video rather than a live stream, YouTube says partially watched videos usually resume where left off, while near-complete videos may not. Clearing watch history clears progress bars. See YouTube Help on watch history and progress.
When the issue follows an encoder reconnect
Check the encoder’s status and logs, confirm the selected scene and source after reconnecting, and review the preview and any local archive. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends a current encoder version and checking CPU load and outbound connectivity when diagnosing stream problems. These are general checks; a reconnect alone does not establish why a different video appeared.

Do not reset the stream key as the first response to a wrong-media problem. The key identifies the YouTube destination, whereas the encoder’s source and playlist determine the content being sent. If encoder software connects to YouTube without a stream key, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team.
