Start by identifying which symptom you have. For a connection timeout, verify the current RTMPS URL and stream key, confirm your encoder supports RTMPS, and check that the VPS can make outbound connections to YouTube on TCP port 443. If the encoder connects but frames drop, investigate stable VPS upload capacity and bitrate instead.
Identify which kind of error you are seeing
Do not treat every message containing “network” as a failed connection. The stage at which the failure occurs determines what to check.

YouTube distinguishes ingest and stream-health issues from viewer playback trouble in its live-stream troubleshooting guidance. Its health-status documentation describes issues including insufficient video ingestion, which can cause buffering. An encoder timeout and a connected stream with dropped frames are not the same failure.
Fix an encoder timeout or failed connection
1. Copy the current URL and stream key from YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room for the stream.
- Open the stream settings and copy the current stream URL and stream key into the encoder.
- If you intend to use RTMPS, make sure you reveal and copy the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default.
- If the encoder still will not start, refresh the stream key in YouTube and update it in the encoder.
Do not paste the stream key into public logs, screenshots, support posts, or other material that could expose it. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance recommends checking the URL and encoder RTMPS support when a connection times out; it also advises refreshing the key when appropriate.

2. Confirm RTMPS, the endpoint, and TCP port 443
Check the complete URL rather than only the hostname. YouTube’s RTMPS documentation requires the RTMPS scheme, a valid ingestion endpoint and application path, and a TLS connection to the correct host. The connection uses TCP port 443, and the TLS handshake needs SNI with the server hostname. A URL copied with the wrong scheme, an outdated or mistyped endpoint, a wrong port, or an encoder that does not support RTMPS can prevent the connection.
If YouTube reports an SSL error, its help page suggests specifying port 443. The exact way to enter the port depends on the encoder, so use that encoder’s documented URL format rather than modifying the endpoint by guesswork. 3. Check outbound connectivity from the VPS
An encoder running on a VPS initiates a connection outward to YouTube. Check the VPS host firewall, cloud or VPC egress rules, the internet route, and any bandwidth or network limits on the VPS plan. Do not open inbound ports or set up port forwarding as a reflex: those are not the first fix for an encoder’s outbound connection.

The relevant controls vary by hosting provider. Google Cloud’s VPC networking documentation, for example, explains that a VM’s internet access can depend on a default internet route, an egress rule that permits traffic, and external connectivity through an external IP or Cloud NAT or proxy. Those are Google Cloud specifics, not universal VPS settings. On another provider, check that provider’s firewall, network, and routing controls.
Fix dropped frames after the encoder connects
Compare bitrate with the VPS’s stable outbound capacity
If the encoder has connected but its dropped-frame counter rises, check whether the VPS can sustain the configured bitrate over time. Use the server’s stable outbound capacity, not your home internet upload speed. Reduce the bitrate if the VPS connection cannot reliably carry it; if necessary, reduce the resolution as well.
OBS gives video bitrate at 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point. That is OBS guidance, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee that a VPS can sustain that rate. The VPS provider’s stated bandwidth alone may not establish the rate available continuously on the route to YouTube. OBS explains that dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to keep up with the configured bitrate in its connection troubleshooting guide.

Check the selected YouTube ingest settings
YouTube says that if you are not using a variable-resolution entrypoint, the stream bitrate must match the ingestion setting for the selected resolution. If bandwidth is insufficient, lowering the resolution is one option. Follow the setting and error shown for your stream rather than assuming that lowering bitrate alone will resolve every health warning. YouTube’s error-message guidance covers incorrect bitrate and format errors.
Read YouTube’s stream-health message before changing codecs
Open the stream’s Live Control Room and inspect the timestamped Health Indicator messages. A stream can reach YouTube successfully and still have an encoding or ingestion problem. YouTube lists incorrect video or audio format and incorrect bitrate among its ingest errors. Its error guidance calls for H.264 video and supported audio, including AAC. The API health documentation also identifies videoIngestionStarved: YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth playback.

Isolate VPN, security software, and route problems
OBS recommends testing another ingest server where that option is available and checking whether a VPN or security software interferes with the connection. Treat any security test as temporary: restore protection afterward, and if the test identifies the cause, use a narrow application exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
On a VPS, also consider the provider’s route or egress policy if the URL, port, protocol, key, and host policy appear correct. Ask the provider to investigate route instability or blocked outbound traffic. Do not assume a particular provider is best: the provider-specific evidence that matters is whether its egress configuration, bandwidth limits, route, and support address your issue.
When the basic checks do not solve it
If the encoder still cannot connect after verifying the refreshed key, current RTMPS endpoint, supported encoder, TCP 443, and VPS egress, collect the time of the failure and the relevant encoder logs. Keep stream keys and other secrets redacted. Give the timestamps and connection details to the VPS provider if the route or egress policy may be responsible; use YouTube support for an issue that remains on YouTube’s ingest or Live Control Room side.
