Then check the file’s actual container and audio/video codecs—not just its filename extension. If the combination is incompatible, try OBS’s VLC Video source or re-encode the file to a combination listed in OBS’s format guide. This is a local playback problem; a YouTube stream key or internet connection is not the first thing to troubleshoot.
1. Check the OBS Media Source

In OBS, select the scene where the video should appear. In the Sources panel, add or select a Media Source. OBS identifies Media Source as the source type for adding audio and video files to a scene; see the OBS Sources Guide.

Open the source’s properties and make sure Local File is enabled and the file path points to the intended video. If you moved or renamed the file, browse to its new location and select it again. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the source and its file support.

Confirm that the source is visible in the scene and not hidden behind another source. Preview the scene in OBS before starting the YouTube stream.

If the path is correct but playback still fails, inspect the media format itself.
2. Check the file’s real format, not just its extension
OBS’s Media Sources page lists video extensions including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif and .webm. It also lists audio extensions such as .mp3, .aac, .ogg and .wav. A listed suffix does not guarantee that a particular file’s encoded video and audio can be decoded by your OBS installation. For example, the OBS guide published March 26, 2023 lists H.264 in MP4, MOV, MKV, M3U8/HLS and TS containers. Its matrix also lists HEVC in those same containers; AV1 in MP4 and MKV; and ProRes in MOV and MKV. These are documented compatibility entries, not a guarantee that every operating-system build, decoder or hardware setup will play every file identically. Inspect the file’s actual codecs rather than inferring them from “.mp4” or another extension.
Renaming a file from one extension to another does not convert its media. If its codec/container combination is unsupported, changing the suffix will not make it playable.

3. Try OBS’s VLC Video source
When the native Media Source cannot play the file, VLC Video is an alternate route worth trying. OBS says this source uses VLC libraries for extended media support, and VLC must be installed. Match the installation architecture: OBS’s documentation states, “If you are using 64-bit OBS, you must install 64-bit VLC.” See OBS Media Sources for the prerequisite and source details.

In the scene’s Sources panel, add a VLC Video source and select the file or files to play.

Preview playback in OBS. If it still fails, do not assume the file is recoverable through VLC; continue by checking compatibility or making a converted copy.

4. Convert only when the format check points to incompatibility
If the file’s codecs and container do not match a combination shown in OBS’s format guide, re-encode it to a supported combination. Use the guide’s compatibility matrix to choose both the output container and codecs; changing the filename extension alone is not conversion. Keep the original file so you can retry with different settings if the first output still does not play. The OBS guide notes that MKV supports every audio/video encoder combination supported in OBS Studio and is the default recording container, but choose an output format suited to your playback workflow rather than assuming one container fixes every file.
5. Test the scene before going live
Once the file plays, check the complete OBS scene in preview: confirm that the video is visible, its audio is present when expected, and the source behaves as intended. Resolve local playback first. If OBS can play the file locally but YouTube does not receive the stream, then investigate stream output, key and connection separately; those are different failure points from opening a file in a scene.
