How to Compress a 24-Hour Video Playlist for a Slow Upload

A practical guide to encoding a 24-hour video for a slow connection: compare size and quality tradeoffs, test settings, and plan upload time.

To make a 24-hour video upload more manageable, encode a copy at a lower bitrate or resolution, test a representative section for quality, then estimate the transfer time using your sustained upload speed. First check the destination’s format, duration and file-size rules: the service is not specified here, and requirements differ. If uploading to YouTube, its recommendations can guide your export, but they are not universal limits.

Start with the source and destination

Before choosing settings, check the receiving service’s current upload rules and note what you are encoding. “Playlist” could mean one 24-hour file or several entries; that distinction can affect upload limits and workflow.

  • Record the source resolution, frame rate, and whether it is SDR or HDR.
  • Check whether the video is progressive or interlaced; YouTube recommends deinterlacing interlaced footage before upload.
  • Note the audio tracks and channel layout, and whether the source is one file or multiple files.
  • Keep an untouched original. Encode a copy so you can revise settings without losing source quality.

Use the destination’s own current specifications if they differ from the YouTube examples below.

Understand the size, quality and upload-time tradeoff

For a 24-hour video, approximate decimal file size in GB as total average bitrate in Mbps × 10.8. This is a calculation from bitrate and duration, not a published file-size statistic. Lowering bitrate or resolution reduces the amount of data to upload, but can soften detail, introduce compression artifacts, or make motion look worse. Choose settings based on what viewers need to see and hear, then inspect a test encode rather than assuming a bitrate guarantees a particular result.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For YouTube SDR uploads, the published recommendations for standard frame rates (24, 25 or 30 fps) include 8 Mbps at 1080p, 5 Mbps at 720p and 2.5 Mbps at 480p. For high frame rates (48, 50 or 60 fps), the corresponding recommendations are 12, 7.5 and 4 Mbps. YouTube lists separate HDR recommendations; for example, 1080p standard-frame-rate HDR is 10 Mbps and 720p HDR is 6.5 Mbps. These are recommendations, not stated minimums or maximums. YouTube also recommends 384 kbps stereo audio. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

YouTube SDR example Video bitrate Approximate 24-hour size with 384 kbps stereo audio
1080p, 24/25/30 fps 8 Mbps About 90.5 GB
720p, 24/25/30 fps 5 Mbps About 58.1 GB
480p, 24/25/30 fps 2.5 Mbps About 31.1 GB

These sizes are derived estimates: they add 0.384 Mbps audio to each video bitrate and multiply by 86,400 seconds. Actual files vary with encoder behavior, scene complexity, audio configuration and container overhead. They are not sizes published by YouTube.

Estimate upload time by dividing file size in bits by sustained upload speed in bits per second. For example, a decimal 58 GB file is about 464 billion bits; at a sustained 5 Mbps upload, the arithmetic estimate is about 25.8 hours. Treat that as a lower-bound planning estimate, not a guarantee: speed fluctuations, overhead and interruptions can lengthen the transfer.

Compress the video with HandBrake

  1. Open a copy of your source. In HandBrake, open the video or first playlist entry you want to encode. If your material is split into files, check the destination’s rules and decide whether to upload them separately or combine them with an appropriate workflow.
  2. Choose a starting preset. HandBrake’s Web presets are intended for internet sharing; Creator presets target hosting services such as YouTube and Vimeo. Most official presets use constant-quality encoding, which aims for consistent visual quality but does not promise a particular final size. HandBrake’s official preset documentation explains the preset categories.
  3. Preserve useful source characteristics. Avoid upscaling. Keep the source frame rate unless the destination specifies otherwise. YouTube’s guidance says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” YouTube upload encoding guidance.
  4. Decide whether predictable size matters more than consistent quality. Constant-quality encoding lets output size vary with the content. If you have a strict upload window or size cap, use an average bitrate or target-size workflow instead; a target is more predictable, though quality can vary across scenes. Reserve part of the size budget for audio and container overhead.
  5. Encode a representative short segment first. Include motion, small text, dark scenes, speech and any other difficult material. Review detail, motion artifacts, audio clarity and synchronization. Adjust quality, resolution or bitrate until the result is acceptable.
  6. Encode the full duration and verify the output. Check the resulting duration, audio tracks, playback and file size before starting a long upload. If the service has specific format requirements, confirm the export meets them.

For an approximate video bitrate budget when targeting a maximum file size, divide the desired file size in bits by 86,400 seconds, then leave room for audio and container overhead. FFmpeg documents bitrate as an encoding option; its documentation is useful if you use a different encoder or need finer control: FFmpeg documentation.

Use YouTube settings only when uploading to YouTube

YouTube recommends MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, and encoding at the same frame rate as the recording. Its recommendations are destination-specific; another host may accept different formats or require different settings. Consult YouTube’s current page for the complete recommendations, including audio and HDR: YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

Plan for encoding time and unreliable transfers

A 24-hour encode can take many hours, depending on the computer, source and settings. HandBrake notes that hardware presets use dedicated media engines optimized for maximum encoding speed. That can be a speed option on supported hardware, but results depend on the encoder and settings; it is not necessary to buy new equipment simply to begin.

Make the upload estimate from the finished file’s actual size and your sustained upstream speed, then leave substantial extra time for variability and interruptions. If the destination supports resumable uploads, check its instructions before starting; resumability is not established for an unspecified service.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The export is still too large: Lower the video bitrate or resolution, or select a less demanding quality target. Re-encode a representative segment and inspect it before committing to the full 24 hours.
  • The result looks blocky or text is hard to read: The bitrate may be too low for the scene complexity or resolution. Increase bitrate or output resolution where appropriate, then compare test segments with the source.
  • The upload estimate seems impossibly long: Recalculate from the actual file size and sustained upload rate, not the advertised maximum connection speed. A fluctuating connection or interruptions can add time.
  • The upload is rejected: Check the destination’s current duration, file-size and format rules, then verify the export’s container, codec, frame rate and scan type against those rules.
  • Audio is missing, wrong, or out of sync: Recheck selected audio tracks and channel layout, then play the encoded test segment before exporting the full duration.
  • The encode takes longer than expected: Long duration and demanding settings increase processing time. HandBrake’s hardware presets may use supported dedicated media engines for speed, but the benefit depends on the system and encoding choices. HandBrake’s video quality documentation.

StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping on YouTube from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. This is a YouTube-only service for uploaded videos, not a camera livestream. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
