If OBS itself is black, troubleshoot the scene or media source. If OBS and its recording look right, check YouTube’s event connection and stream health instead. A black screen is a symptom, not one diagnosis.
Locate where the video disappears
Test while the prerecorded file is actually playing. Compare these stages in order; each result points to a different part of the signal path.

OBS showing “streaming” does not by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving usable video. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s setup guidance says to wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room and then select Go live. Check its stream-health notices as well as OBS’s status. Fix a black OBS preview
Verify the Media Source and file
For a local prerecorded video, use OBS’s Media Source. Open its properties and confirm that Local File points to the intended video. Make sure the source is in the active scene, its eye icon shows it is visible, and the file is playing rather than already ended. OBS documents common supported file types including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM. OBS Project: Media Sources.

Review the playback options in the Media Source properties:
- Loop: Enable this if the video should replay after it finishes. With looping off, a completed file will not keep supplying moving footage.
- Restart playback when source becomes active: Enable this if the file should start from the beginning when the source becomes active in the scene.
- Show nothing when playback ends: Check this if the picture disappears at the end of the video; the end behavior may leave nothing visible.
- Close file when inactive: Consider this when diagnosing playback after switching scenes, because the source may be inactive when its scene is not selected.
Check visibility, layering and canvas placement
OBS draws scene sources in layers. A source above the video can cover it, even when the Media Source is working. Confirm its eye icon is on, temporarily move it above other sources to test, and check that its transform, size and position place the image inside the canvas. OBS Project: Sources Guide.

Check playlist source requirements
If the scene uses VLC Video Source rather than Media Source, OBS requires VLC to be installed. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. This dependency applies to VLC Video Source, not ordinary Media Source playback. OBS Project: Media Sources.
If OBS preview is good but the local recording is black
This result points away from a missing or hidden video source and toward OBS output, encoding or performance. Keep the test simple: make a short local recording of the same scene while the video plays, then inspect it before changing settings. OBS composites scenes using GPU resources; overloaded rendering or encoding can affect output.

When performance symptoms support this branch, OBS’s performance guidance recommends running OBS as administrator on Windows as an initial GPU-overload check, closing only known GPU-heavy applications, simplifying resource-heavy scenes, reducing source sizes or filters, and lowering output resolution or frame rate if needed. If OBS is correct but YouTube’s preview is black
Check the event and connection
Confirm OBS is sending to the intended YouTube event. Verify the YouTube server URL and stream key match that event; a correct local recording cannot confirm that the right event is receiving the output. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for YouTube’s incoming preview and read the stream-health messages before selecting Go live. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.

Compare encoder settings with YouTube’s requirements
Use YouTube’s current published encoder guidance for the resolution, frame rate and codec you intend to send, rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS; its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. Frame rates may be up to 60 fps, keyframes are recommended every 2 seconds and should not exceed 4 seconds, and bitrate encoding should be CBR. Consult YouTube’s bitrate table for the applicable values. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into output formats for different devices and network conditions. A black image alone does not establish a network failure. Use this branch if OBS’s dropped-frame counter rises or its connection indicator turns yellow or red. OBS associates those signs with an unstable connection or one unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests checking the selected server, matching bitrate to stable upload bandwidth, reviewing network software or VPN/firewall interference, and checking Wi-Fi and network hardware. Run a complete test before the next event
- Set up a private or unlisted YouTube test using the same scene, prerecorded file and encoder settings planned for the real stream.
- Include movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- While the file plays, check the OBS canvas preview and make a short local recording.
- Confirm the correct event and stream key, then inspect YouTube’s incoming preview and stream-health messages.
- Verify viewer playback and quality selection after the incoming preview is working.
YouTube says streams are automatically archived when the encoder stops sending, provided the stream is under 12 hours. Do not rely on an archive as a substitute for checking the live path before a longer broadcast. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.
