Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a 24/7 story livestream starts over after a crash, first identify what actually failed: OBS may have lost its connection, the OBS process or computer may have stopped, the media source may have restarted, or YouTube may have ended the broadcast. These are separate recovery problems. OBS’s reconnect setting addresses a dropped output connection; looping replays media, but neither guarantees that a crashed setup will resume the story at the same item and timestamp.
Identify which part restarted
Before changing settings, check OBS, the story source, and the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Note which story was playing and approximately where it was when the problem occurred. The remedy depends on the failure layer:
| What you see | What likely failed | First response |
|---|---|---|
| OBS is open, but its output disconnected | Connection from OBS to YouTube’s ingest service | Configure OBS automatic reconnect, then investigate recurring connection or bitrate problems. |
| OBS is no longer running, or the computer rebooted | The application process or host | Use an operating-system startup task or separate process supervisor to relaunch OBS; then verify streaming and YouTube event state. |
| OBS is streaming, but the story starts at the beginning | The media source restarted or its playback position was not restored | Review source and playlist behavior. For exact continuation, use a workflow that explicitly saves and restores the item and playback time. |
| YouTube Studio shows that the broadcast ended | The YouTube event lifecycle | Inspect the event in Studio and take the action its current state requires; a new event or operator action may be needed. |
These symptoms can overlap. For example, a computer reboot can stop OBS, and the event may also end before OBS is relaunched. Check each layer rather than assuming one reconnect control fixes the entire chain.
Why looping and automatic reconnect do not restore the story position
Looping repeats a file; it is not a playback checkpoint
OBS documents the Media Source “Loop” option as replaying a file after playback completes. Its “Restart playback when source becomes active” option starts playback when that source becomes current and visible. The VLC Video source offers “Loop Playlist.” Those controls describe replay and activation behavior—not saving and restoring a playlist cursor and timestamp after the OBS process crashes. - 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Automatic reconnect handles a different failure
OBS automatic reconnect is an advanced stream-output setting for reconnecting after a connection interruption. It does not relaunch an OBS process that has crashed or restart a computer. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance, dated 2024-09-30, discusses dropped frames as a connection stability or bitrate-capacity issue and identifies possible external causes: OBS dropped frames.
YouTube DVR is for viewers, not the broadcaster’s source
YouTube DVR can let viewers pause, rewind, and continue watching a live stream, subject to limits on very long streams. It does not restore the playback cursor of an OBS or VLC source. YouTube’s broadcast API documentation describes event state and options such as automatic start and stop and recording; it does not document restoration of a local media-source position: YouTube Live Streaming API.

Fix a dropped connection while OBS is still open
- Confirm OBS is still running. If it is, check whether the output is disconnected or reconnecting, and whether YouTube Studio is receiving the broadcast. If OBS has exited, use the crash-recovery steps below instead.
- Enable OBS automatic reconnect. Find the automatic reconnect controls in OBS’s advanced settings for stream output. Labels and placement can vary by version; consult the OBS guide for the installed version: OBS Studio overview.
- Check connection stability if interruptions recur. Review OBS dropped-frame indications, available upload capacity, the network path, VPN or security software interference, and network hardware. A reconnect setting can retry a connection; it cannot make an unstable or undersized connection reliable.
- Confirm the event in YouTube Studio. After OBS reconnects, check whether the expected event is still receiving data or has ended. Do not assume a successful OBS reconnect means the same YouTube event is live.
Recover after OBS crashes or the computer reboots
Because OBS cannot reconnect itself after its process has stopped, configure a separate process supervisor or an operating-system startup task if you need OBS to relaunch. Treat relaunching OBS, starting its stream output, keeping the intended YouTube event active, and restoring the story position as separate jobs.
- Choose what should launch. OBS launch parameters include
--startstreamingand options for selecting a scene collection, profile, and scene. Set these deliberately so startup does not select an unintended configuration. See the OBS launch parameters guide. - Set up relaunch outside OBS. Use a process supervisor or your operating system’s startup or scheduled-task facility to launch OBS after a crash or reboot. OBS’s launch-parameter guide notes that automated or scheduled Windows launches require the working directory to be set as specified there.
- Verify the stream action separately. If you use
--startstreaming, test what happens when OBS starts. That option can automate starting output, but it does not prove that a previously active YouTube event will remain available or continue. - Check the event in YouTube Studio after relaunch. Follow the action required by the event’s current state. Reusable stream credentials and automatic start or stop options do not establish that a particular prior event is still live. YouTube does not document one universal crash-recovery window.
Check the story files and playback behavior
- Confirm that every story file and playlist path remains available after a reboot. A source that cannot find its media may behave differently from one that resumes normally.
- Confirm that the intended source is present in the active scene and that its loop, visibility, and restart controls match your intended playback behavior.
- If the source is meant to continue at the precise story and timestamp, use a player or workflow that explicitly persists that state. The OBS media-source documentation does not promise crash-time playback-position checkpointing.
- Validate the behavior on the OBS and VLC versions actually installed. Menu labels and behavior can change by version; a controlled test is more reliable than assuming that looping preserves position.
Test each failure mode before relying on the setup
OBS recommends testing stream settings before relying on them. Test the layers separately so a successful reconnect does not mask a playback or event-continuity problem:

- Briefly interrupt the network and observe whether OBS reconnects and whether the expected YouTube event remains live.
- Close or restart the OBS process in a controlled test. Check whether the supervisor relaunches it, whether output starts as intended, and whether the story resumes at the expected item and time.
- If relevant, test a host reboot. Check that source files remain accessible, the correct profile and scene load, and the YouTube event state is handled correctly.
- Record the result at each layer: OBS running, output connected, YouTube event active, and story item and position. If exact narrative continuity is essential, explicitly verify item-and-time persistence; neither looping nor reconnect alone establishes it.
