There is no universal best hour for a 24/7 YouTube channel. Start with YouTube Studio’s When your viewers are on YouTube report to find candidate days and times, then compare those windows with your own results from similar live streams. The report shows when your viewers were active across YouTube during the last 28 days; it is a planning signal, not a forecast that they will watch your channel.
How do I find the best time to stream on YouTube?
- Open the Audience report. In YouTube Studio, go to Analytics → Audience and review When your viewers are on YouTube. Look for recurring patterns by day and time, rather than treating one busy-looking block as the answer. YouTube describes this chart as viewer activity across YouTube over the previous 28 days. - Put candidate times in the right time zones. Review the channel’s top geographies and convert promising blocks to the local times of the largest relevant viewer regions. Geography and some other audience data may be limited; sparse data does not prove that a region has no viewers. If your documentary audience spans regions, note which locations a candidate window serves well and which it may not.
- Check comparable live-stream results. In live analytics, compare average and peak concurrent viewers, average view duration, watch time, audience retention, and traffic sources. YouTube’s live reporting includes these measures and offers filters for separating live and on-demand data. See YouTube Help: See your live stream’s metrics.
- Repeat the comparison across similar periods. Compare streams with similar subject matter, length, format, and promotion where possible. A one-off event or unusually strong documentary should not determine the regular schedule. YouTube recommends using performance trends to spot strong live streams and decide when to go live, and advises comparing content in the same format because audiences can behave differently across formats. - Choose the time that fits the channel’s goal. For live interaction, peak concurrent viewers may matter most. For a continuous documentary feed, sustained viewing—such as average view duration, watch time, and retention—may be more useful. Consider traffic sources and geography too. YouTube does not prescribe one score, weighting, or threshold for choosing a time; decide which outcomes matter to your channel.
How to compare candidate hours fairly
Use the Audience chart to nominate a few recurring windows, then judge them against channel-specific live outcomes. Keep the comparison practical and consistent:
- Compare similar time blocks on comparable days and across multiple periods, not an isolated peak.
- Keep formats comparable. A scheduled premiere, a live discussion, and an always-on documentary loop can draw different viewing behavior.
- Look at both audience size and staying power. A high peak does not by itself mean viewers watched for longer or that a stream sustained more watch time.
- Use traffic sources to understand how viewers reached a stream, while recognizing that source data may be limited.
- Record the candidate window, local times for important regions, stream format, and the metrics you care about so later comparisons use the same basis.
YouTube’s guidance supports looking for trends, but it does not set a required sample size or a statistical test for declaring a winning hour. Treat the result as a working schedule choice and revisit it as the channel’s audience and recent activity change.
What the “When your viewers are on YouTube” chart can—and cannot—tell you
The chart answers when your viewers are active across YouTube during the report’s 28-day look-back window. It does not directly predict attendance for a particular channel’s live stream. Use it to identify plausible windows, then rely on the channel’s own live-stream reporting to see how those windows performed.

There is no evidence here for a single best weekday or hour that applies to all 24/7 channels. The strongest candidate depends on the channel’s viewers, their locations, the stream format, and the outcome the creator values. If the Audience report is thin or unavailable for a region, use the available information cautiously rather than treating missing data as a negative signal.
