To film a strong interview, choose a quiet, visually useful location, settle the subject’s position and eyeline, place a suitable microphone close enough to capture clear speech, and shape light to fit the story. Before the interview begins, record a short test and listen back; during the conversation, monitor the sound and give the subject room to finish each answer.
Plan the location and frame
Scout the room before shoot day if possible. Listen for steady noise, intermittent interruptions, and echo, not just what appears in the picture. A sound with no visible source can draw attention away from the speaker. Choose a background that supports the subject without competing for attention; a simple, uncluttered backdrop is often a practical starting point.
Decide whether the subject will sit or stand, where they will be positioned, and how the camera will frame them. Set a consistent eyeline and think about how this interview may need to cut with other shots or interviews. These choices are easier to make before the subject arrives than in the middle of a conversation. See the BBC Academy’s preparation guidance and its advice on getting the shot right.
Choose and place the microphone
Prioritize intelligible dialogue. Common interview microphone categories include lavalier, tabletop, and shotgun microphones. A lavalier sits close to the speaker and is small and unobtrusive; a tabletop mic can suit a seated setup, while a shotgun mic may be positioned toward the speaker. The right choice depends on the room, how the subject will move, and what can connect reliably to your recording device. Wired and wireless lavaliers also involve different setup and compatibility considerations.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Whichever type you use, connect it to the device that is actually recording and check the input. Listen for room noise, interruptions, clothing or handling noise, and knocks from jewelry or objects on a table. Do not assume a connected microphone is working just because it appears plugged in. Adobe’s interview and shooting guidance discusses microphone categories; it does not establish a best model or test specific products.
Shape the light for the story
Choose a lighting style that suits the subject and the tone of the piece. High-key lighting is bright and can support an open, upbeat look; low-key lighting uses more contrast and shadow. Neither is automatically right for every interview.

For softer shadows, use a larger light source or soften a fixture with a modifier such as a softbox or diffuser. Keep the color temperature consistent across lights when using more than one. When selecting artificial lighting, consider its output, portability, power needs, whether it is continuous, and whether it accepts useful modifiers. Adobe explains the distinction between high-key and low-key lighting and offers broader video production guidance.
Run a complete pre-interview check
- Listen to the room. Check for steady noise, interruptions, and distracting echo; adjust the location or plan around them where you can.
- Set the frame. Place the subject, confirm the camera composition, and settle the eyeline you want to maintain.
- Check the microphone path. Confirm the microphone is connected to the recording device and positioned appropriately for the speaker.
- Set the light. Check the look on camera and soften harsh shadows if that suits the interview.
- Record and review a test. Have someone stand in if possible. Play back a short sample and listen for clear speech, unwanted noise, and signs that the intended input was not recorded.
BBC Academy advises checking equipment before the interview and verifying sound levels, quality, and that the input is being recorded. Its interviewing guidance also covers preparation and asking questions.

Record the conversation and verify it before wrapping
Monitor the recorded sound during the interview rather than relying on the setup check alone. Stay quiet while the subject is speaking: avoid unnecessary acknowledgements that may be audible, and watch for avoidable handling or table noise. Give the interviewee time to finish thoughts instead of rushing to fill pauses.
Before the subject leaves, confirm that the recording exists and is usable. Check the recorded file, not only the camera’s display or recording indicator. If something went wrong, you will have the chance to repeat the relevant answer while the subject is still available.

Compare gear by fit, not by unsupported rankings
The available guidance supports practical selection criteria rather than model-by-model tests or current price comparisons.
- Microphones: Compare placement and distance from the speaker, whether the setup is wired or wireless, how much movement it allows, and whether it connects to your recording device.
- Lights: Compare softness, controllable output, portability, power requirements, color consistency, and modifier compatibility.
For a documentary interview, favor the setup you can position, connect, test, and monitor dependably in the actual room.
