How to Export Screen Recordings in Different Video Formats

Choose a screen recording format by destination and codec support. Follow the OBS MKV-to-MP4 or Clipchamp export workflow, with fixes for common compatibility problems.

To export a screen recording in a format that will play or edit correctly, use your recorder’s export or remux option, or import the recording into an editor and export it there. MP4 is a common compatibility choice, but the right format depends on the destination and the codecs it supports. For OBS, a resilient workflow is to record in MKV and remux to MP4 afterward; in Clipchamp, an original screen recording may be WebM while an edited project exports as MP4.

Choose a format for where the recording is going

MP4, MKV, MOV, and WebM are containers: they package video and audio streams. A container name or filename extension does not tell the whole compatibility story. The codecs inside the container matter too, and changing “.mkv” to “.mp4” in a filename does not convert the video. Check the destination app’s supported containers and codecs before exporting a long recording. OBS’s audio/video formats guide explains supported combinations, and Clipchamp’s supported formats list notes that files with supported containers can still vary in codec.

Use case Practical choice What to check
Web playback or upload MP4 Confirm the destination accepts the codecs in the file; the MP4 extension alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Recording where an unexpected stop is a concern Record in MKV, then remux to MP4 if needed (OBS workflow) This resilience and remux option are documented for OBS; do not assume every recorder offers the same behavior.
Editing in a particular application Use a container and codec that the editor accepts; OBS notes fragmented MP4/MOV can suit common editing or upload workflows Verify the editor’s current support before capturing a long session.
Clipchamp screen recording for an edited project Import the capture and export the finished project as MP4 The downloaded capture may be WebM; the finished edited project is exported as MP4.

Export or convert an OBS recording

Record to MKV for a more interruption-tolerant capture

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Output and choose MKV as the recording format. OBS recommends MKV if an unforeseen interruption could prevent a graceful stop; its documentation says an interrupted recording is less likely to corrupt the whole file. This is specific to OBS’s documented workflow. Read the OBS recording output guide.
  2. Record normally. Keep the original MKV as your capture master until you have checked the converted file.
  3. If the file needs to be MP4, use OBS’s built-in remux/conversion option for the non-MP4 recording. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding compatible streams; it is not a general cure for unsupported codecs.
  4. Play the resulting MP4 and check both picture and audio before deleting or archiving the original.

When not to use this workflow

If your editor has limited MKV support, choose a format it supports before recording or remux the OBS capture afterward. OBS describes MKV as flexible and recoverable after an interrupted recording, but notes it may be less well supported in editing software; fragmented MP4/MOV may be a better fit for some editing and upload workflows. The available codec/container combinations are application-specific. Check OBS’s formats guide and the current requirements of your editor.

Export a screen recording in Clipchamp

Save the finished edited project as MP4

  1. Open the recording in Clipchamp and make any edits needed.
  2. Choose Export to save the finished project. Microsoft says Clipchamp exports finished projects as MPEG-4 (.mp4) at 30 fps. Its documented output choices are 480p SD, 720p HD, 1080p HD, and 4K UHD; availability depends on account type and plan, and some premium features or 4K export require an eligible plan. These are Clipchamp-specific product details and may change. See Microsoft’s export-format documentation.
  3. Select a resolution available to your account and export. Review the saved file’s playback and audio.

Distinguish the original capture from the export

Microsoft says a downloaded Clipchamp screen recording may be WebM depending on default settings, while an edited project exported through Export is MP4. These are different stages, not conflicting descriptions of the same file. Microsoft’s screen recording instructions describe the capture, and its export-format page describes the finished project.

Troubleshoot format and import problems

  • The file will not open after changing its extension: renaming does not convert a container or codec. Re-export or remux with a suitable application.
  • An editor rejects a file whose extension it lists as supported: check the codec and whether the file is intact. Clipchamp lists MP4, MOV, WebM, AVI, DIVX, 3GP, WMV, VOB, and MKV as supported input containers, but says some files may need conversion before use, which can take longer. Check Clipchamp’s current supported formats.
  • The MP4 plays in one place but not another: verify the target’s accepted codecs as well as its container requirements; MP4 alone is not a guarantee.
  • You cannot choose a particular resolution in Clipchamp: available output choices depend on account type and plan. Select from the options shown in your account rather than assuming every listed resolution is available.
  • An OBS capture is MKV but your workflow needs MP4: use OBS’s remux option and test the output. Keep the original until the remuxed file has been checked.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the screen recording is intended to play as a continuous YouTube stream rather than simply be delivered as a file, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection needs to stay on. It accepts uploads at their original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
