How to Estimate EC2 Bandwidth for a YouTube 24/7 Stream

Estimate a continuous YouTube stream’s EC2 outbound data from actual bitrate and runtime, then check instance networking and current transfer pricing separately.

Estimate a 24/7 YouTube stream’s EC2 outbound data from the encoder’s actual bitrate and runtime: decimal GB ≈ Mbps × seconds ÷ 8,000. At a constant 1 Mbps, that is about 10.8 decimal GB per day or 324 GB in a 30-day month, before transport overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation, and other instance traffic. Treat this as a payload estimate—not an AWS bill. Data volume, sustained network capacity, and transfer cost are separate questions.

Calculate the stream’s outbound data

Use the stream’s configured output bitrate, not a resolution label such as “1080p.” If the encoder reports audio and video bitrates separately, add them. Then multiply by the number of seconds the stream will run.

Decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × runtime in seconds ÷ 8,000

This uses decimal gigabytes, where 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. AWS metering and billing use AWS’s own definitions, so this arithmetic estimates the stream payload rather than reproducing a bill exactly.

Examples for a continuous stream

Output bitrate Per 24 hours Per 30 days
1 Mbps About 10.8 GB About 324 GB
6 Mbps About 64.8 GB About 1,944 GB (1.944 decimal TB)

These are payload calculations assuming a constant bitrate and no planned downtime. The monthly figures use 30 days, or 2,592,000 seconds. For 31 days, use 2,678,400 seconds. A variable-bitrate stream is better estimated from its average bitrate over the full period or measured byte totals; do not multiply a brief peak by every hour of the month.

Choose a bitrate based on the encoder output

YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are setup guidance, not a measurement of the encoder’s actual average network use. Check the configured output rate and verify traffic after the stream starts. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), RTMP or RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.

The broadcaster sends its ingest stream to YouTube; it does not send a separate copy for every viewer rendition. Keep data volume, network capacity, and cost separate

Volume: how many bytes leave the instance?

Bitrate multiplied by runtime estimates outbound payload. Add a clearly identified operating margin if you need a planning figure: it can account for protocol overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation, and unrelated traffic. A margin is your planning choice, not an AWS rule.

Capacity: can the instance sustain the stream?

A monthly data estimate does not establish that an instance can sustain the required send rate. Check the selected instance type’s baseline network bandwidth and relevant flow limits. AWS notes that some smaller instance types have “up to” bandwidth and can burst above baseline using network I/O credits. Burst is best effort; available burst time varies by instance size, and AWS documentation says it may typically last 5 to 60 minutes depending on size. That is not proof of suitability for a stream that must run continuously.

Account for both total instance capacity and single-flow behavior: a video ingest connection is often one flow. AWS says available bandwidth depends on instance type, vCPU count, destination, traffic-flow characteristics, and instance-level network allowances. A nominal network label alone does not guarantee actual throughput. Review the selected type’s applicable limits in Amazon EC2 instance network bandwidth documentation.

Cost: what will the transferred data be billed at?

Apply the current data-transfer-out pricing and eligible allowances for your account and region, then add compute and any other service charges separately. Pricing and eligibility can change, so confirm them on the AWS EC2 pricing page before relying on a cost estimate. Its page, accessed in 2026, describes an eligible 100 GB monthly internet data-transfer allowance aggregated across eligible AWS services and regions; exclusions and eligibility terms apply. The page also shows a US East (Ohio) example with internet data transfer in listed at $0/GB and tiered outbound pricing. Those are not universal rates: verify the current region, account eligibility, billing definitions, and any applicable discounts.

Estimate and validate EC2 egress step by step

  1. Read the configured output rate. Find the encoder’s actual video bitrate and, when reported separately, add audio bitrate. Use Mbps.
  2. Set the runtime. Specify whether the stream is truly continuous or has planned downtime. For reference, 30 days is 2,592,000 seconds and 31 days is 2,678,400 seconds.
  3. Calculate payload. Multiply Mbps by runtime seconds and divide by 8,000 for decimal GB.
  4. Add a stated planning margin if needed. Explain that it allows for overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation, and other traffic; do not imply the percentage comes from AWS.
  5. Check sustained instance networking. Confirm baseline capacity, relevant single-flow limits, burst-credit behavior, and headroom for the selected instance type.
  6. Compare with observed usage after launch. Check CloudWatch and billing usage for the same period, then reconcile against current regional pricing and account terms.

Measure traffic and reconcile billing

CloudWatch’s EC2 NetworkOut metric is useful for observing outbound traffic from an instance. It is not the same metric as DataTransfer-Out-Bytes, which AWS support identifies as the metric used in Cost Explorer reports. Use network metrics to inspect traffic and billing usage to reconcile costs; summing NetworkOut alone does not necessarily reproduce a bill. See AWS’s explanation of how to calculate network usage for EC2 instances.

Metrics are aggregated over configured CloudWatch periods. AWS also notes that short microbursts can exceed allowances or drop packets without appearing at the same granularity in ordinary instance metrics. For a continuous stream, check stream health and relevant network performance metrics as well as monthly totals.

Stream setup checks that affect a reliable estimate

  • Test before going live with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, as YouTube recommends.
  • Monitor stream health while it is running; a successful monthly estimate does not establish that the ingest connection is stable.
  • Use the configured output bitrate and the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate when calculating volume.
  • Use YouTube’s CBR guidance and two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds) as encoder setup guidance; these settings do not replace measuring EC2 traffic.

Common estimation mistakes

  • Using the quality label alone: “1080p” does not specify the actual bitrate. Check encoder output.
  • Counting viewer renditions as EC2 uploads: YouTube transcodes the ingest stream for viewers; the broadcaster’s egress is the stream sent to YouTube.
  • Treating an “up to” bandwidth figure as sustained capacity: Check baseline and flow limits for a 24/7 workload.
  • Calling the payload estimate an AWS bill: Apply current regional transfer pricing, account eligibility, compute, and other service charges separately.
  • Using one metric as both traffic and billing proof: CloudWatch NetworkOut and Cost Explorer’s DataTransfer-Out-Bytes serve different purposes.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to stay live without keeping an EC2 instance or a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Your uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card; monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
