How to Configure AWS Elemental MediaLive and MediaPackage for YouTube Live

MediaPackage is a playback origin, not YouTube’s direct ingest output. Configure MediaLive HLS for YouTube, and use MediaPackage separately when you need another playback endpoint.

MediaPackage is not the component that sends a live stream to YouTube. In the documented AWS workflow, MediaPackage packages an incoming stream for playback by viewers, while an encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaLive uploads the live video to YouTube. To send an AWS-encoded program to YouTube, configure MediaLive’s HLS output with the HLS ingestion URL from YouTube Live Control Room. Add MediaPackage separately if you also need an AWS playback origin for another audience or player.

Understand which AWS service sends video where

The key distinction is stream direction. MediaLive is the encoder and delivery component in the AWS-to-YouTube workflow: it takes the live program, encodes it, and uploads HLS playlists and segments to YouTube. MediaPackage is an origin and packager: it receives an upstream live input and serves a playback presentation over HTTPS when a viewer or downstream client requests it. These are separate destinations and functions, not interchangeable output settings.

AWS describes MediaLive HLS output to YouTube in its 2021 example for streaming 4K HDR video to YouTube. For MediaPackage’s role, see AWS’s MediaPackage v2 live processing flow.

  • To put a live program on YouTube: configure an encoder to send to YouTube’s HLS ingest endpoint. In this AWS workflow, that encoder is MediaLive.
  • To provide a separate playback URL: send the program to MediaPackage using an input path supported by your MediaPackage generation, then configure an appropriate origin endpoint.
  • To do both: plan for the YouTube ingest path and MediaPackage playback path as separate outputs. Validate each independently.

Configure MediaLive HLS output for YouTube

The steps below describe the documented architecture, not a claim that a particular account or channel has been tested. YouTube generates the ingest URL for the selected live setup, so use the current value in Live Control Room rather than treating an example URL as universal. AWS’s published console flow dates to April 14, 2021; console labels and layouts may have changed since then.

1. Create or select an HLS stream in YouTube

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream setup you intend to use.
  2. Select HLS as the stream protocol and copy the displayed Stream URL. If you are configuring redundant ingest, also copy the displayed Backup server URL.
  3. Use the URL for this selected setup; do not substitute an old static destination copied from an example. YouTube notes that the HLS Stream URL can update.
  4. For HDR, leave Turn on manual resolution unchecked, as specified in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

2. Configure the MediaLive input and channel

Set up the live input and channel for your incoming program using the source and encoding configuration appropriate to your production. The detailed input setup depends on the source; the relevant output requirement here is that MediaLive’s HLS output be directed to the current YouTube HLS destination.

3. Add an HLS output group and destination

  1. In the MediaLive channel configuration, add an HLS output group.
  2. Enter the YouTube HLS destination copied from Live Control Room. Configure a second destination only if you are using the backup URL and the channel design calls for redundant ingest.
  3. For the CDN setting, AWS’s example uses the HLS basic PUT setting. Confirm the current console’s available options and YouTube’s current requirements when configuring your channel.
  4. Set the segment duration within YouTube’s permitted range of 1 to 4 seconds. AWS’s example uses 2 seconds; that is an example setting, not a universal requirement.

4. Match video, audio, and playlist settings

Configure MediaLive’s output to conform to the selected YouTube HLS profile and the actual source. YouTube’s HLS delivery guide describes muxed M2TS video and audio, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOP, and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube Help also lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio support for HLS. Use the target-specific profile rather than assuming every codec combination is appropriate for every stream setup.

YouTube’s HLS setup requirements also call for TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments, HTTPS POST or PUT, and no byte-range mode. Encryption is not supported other than HTTPS transport. HLS disables YouTube’s Ultra low-latency mode and has higher latency than continuous-stream delivery because it sends media in segments.

For HDR, the developer guide specifies HEVC and 10-bit PQ or HLG with Rec. 2020 color primaries. Confirm that the source, encoder, and selected YouTube stream profile all support the same target format; setting only one part of the chain to HDR is not sufficient.

Add MediaPackage only when you need a separate playback origin

If viewers or another downstream client need a playback endpoint hosted through MediaPackage, configure that as a separate path. Feed MediaPackage from an upstream encoder using an input type supported by the MediaPackage generation in use, then create a suitable origin endpoint and check the returned playback manifest. In MediaPackage v2, AWS describes output as dynamically packaged when a downstream playback request arrives.

Keep MediaPackage v2 and legacy instructions separate

Do not combine console steps or endpoint assumptions from different MediaPackage generations. The current MediaPackage v2 supported inputs and outputs documentation describes HLS and CMAF live inputs, AWS Signature Version 4 authorization and channel policy behavior, and TS/HLS or CMAF endpoints. The older legacy MediaPackage live guide describes a different live-input flow, including HLS over WebDAV with digest authentication. Choose the guide and supported input path that match the resource you are configuring.

Validate YouTube and MediaPackage independently

  1. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream status to confirm that YouTube is receiving the MediaLive output.
  2. If using MediaPackage, request its playback manifest separately and verify it with the downstream player or client that will use the origin.
  3. When diagnosing a failure, identify which path is failing: encoder-to-YouTube ingest or encoder-to-MediaPackage playback. A healthy playback origin does not establish that YouTube ingest is working, and a YouTube preview does not establish that the MediaPackage manifest is usable.

Common configuration problems

  • Trying to send MediaPackage’s playback URL to YouTube: MediaPackage’s documented role is to serve packaged playback to requesting clients. Configure an encoder’s HLS upload to YouTube instead.
  • Using an old or incorrect ingest URL: Copy the Stream URL from the current YouTube Live Control Room setup. Check the selected protocol and, if relevant, the backup server URL.
  • Segments outside the allowed duration: Set segments to 1–4 seconds. The 2-second setting in AWS’s example is within that range, but does not replace checking the actual channel configuration.
  • Playlist or transport mismatch: Check for TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments, HTTPS POST or PUT, and no byte-range mode.
  • Unsupported media profile: Check muxing, video and audio codecs, closed GOP, frame rate, and HDR properties against YouTube’s HLS requirements and the selected profile.
  • MediaPackage input setup fails: Verify whether the resource uses MediaPackage v2 or the legacy service, then follow that generation’s supported input and authorization documentation rather than mixing procedures.
  • YouTube works but the playback endpoint does not, or vice versa: Test the two destinations separately and troubleshoot the failing path; they serve different roles.

Account for HLS latency and operational scope

HLS is appropriate when the selected workflow requires HLS ingest, but it is not YouTube’s Ultra low-latency mode. YouTube describes higher latency for HLS than continuous-stream delivery because HLS transfers segments. If latency is a deciding factor, compare the available YouTube ingest protocols before building the channel around HLS.

Adding MediaPackage is useful when a separate AWS playback origin is part of the design. It also adds a distinct input, endpoint, and playback validation path; it is not required merely to send the program to YouTube. AWS’s MediaLive-to-YouTube example and YouTube’s HLS specifications provide the documented basis for the ingest configuration, but do not establish a tested end-to-end result for a specific account.
