In FFmpeg, put the YouTube stream URL and stream key together in the command’s output destination. Copy both from the YouTube Live Control Room for the stream you intend to start; do not use an example URL or share the key publicly.
Where the stream URL and key go
YouTube provides an ingestion URL and a stream key in the Live Control Room’s stream settings. A graphical encoder may have separate fields for these values. With FFmpeg, they form the output destination at the end of the command: STREAM_URL/STREAM_KEY. The exact endpoint and path must come from the selected stream’s current settings.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat yours as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the associated stream.
Enter the key in an FFmpeg command
- Get the connection details. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and the stream’s Stream settings. Copy the stream URL and key associated with the stream you plan to use.
- Choose the supplied RTMPS address. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use the RTMPS ingestion URL YouTube displays, retaining its hostname and path; do not assume a sample server or application path applies to your channel.
- Build the command. Replace the placeholders below with your input filename and the current URL and key. This is a syntax template, not a command tested against your file, computer, or FFmpeg build:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY' - Run it from a private environment. If FFmpeg accepts the input and connects to YouTube, check the Live Control Room for the incoming feed and any encoder warnings.
FFmpeg documents the general RTMP publishing form as ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. When YouTube supplies the URL and key separately, join them in the output destination as STREAM_URL/STREAM_KEY. The FFmpeg protocol documentation covers RTMP variants, but available protocol support can differ between builds; confirm the installed build supports the protocol you intend to use.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use RTMPS and keep the destination intact
RTMPS is RTMP over TLS. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies port 443, TLS, and a valid endpoint and application path. The hostname is also needed for server authentication through SNI. A cleartext RTMP connection to an endpoint expecting RTMPS can time out. If YouTube supplied an RTMPS URL, do not change it to rtmp:// or remove parts of its path to make a command look like an example.
The key may be visible in command arguments, shell history, or logs, depending on how the command is launched and observed. Avoid putting a live key in public issue reports, screenshots, shared terminals, or command histories. If you suspect it was exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the command with the replacement. YouTube says channel-owner or manager permissions are required to reset a key.

Check encoder settings if the key is accepted but the stream is not right
Entering the key only configures where FFmpeg sends the feed. It does not ensure the input’s encoding settings meet YouTube’s requirements or recommendations. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. It also specifies supported video and audio settings; check the current guidance for the resolution, frame rate, codecs, bitrate, and audio configuration that fit your stream.
These values are separate from the stream key and destination URL. A successful connection with a rejected, unstable, or poor-quality feed calls for checking the encoder settings and the input file, not exposing or changing the key indiscriminately.

Troubleshoot common connection problems
- FFmpeg cannot connect, or YouTube receives no feed: compare the output destination with the current URL and key for the selected YouTube stream. Check that the key is present after the URL in the combined form, and that you did not substitute a sample server or path.
- RTMPS times out or reports an SSL/TLS error: verify that the URL is YouTube’s supplied RTMPS endpoint, uses TLS and port 443, and retains the correct hostname for SNI. Confirm your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.
- The feed connects but YouTube reports an encoder issue: check the current YouTube encoder recommendations for supported media formats, CBR, keyframe interval, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and audio. The key’s placement does not control these settings.
- The key was shared, leaked, or reset: reset it in the Live Control Room if you have channel-owner or manager permission, then replace the old key wherever the FFmpeg destination is configured. Do not continue using a key you believe is compromised.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are sending a prerecorded documentary or other uploaded video to YouTube as a continuous live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, so nothing needs to stay powered on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera input. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
