To send a live stream from FFmpeg to YouTube with H.264 video and AAC audio, encode the input with an H.264 encoder and an AAC encoder, use constant bitrate (CBR), set keyframes about every two seconds, and send the output to your YouTube Live destination over RTMPS when your FFmpeg build supports it. Choose bitrate for your resolution and frame rate, then test and monitor the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. The command depends on your input and installed FFmpeg encoders; there is no single command that fits every setup.

Recommended YouTube Live settings for H.264 and AAC

YouTube’s live-maintained encoder guidance, verified on October 3, 2026, lists H.264 video and AAC audio as supported for RTMP/RTMPS live ingest. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of stream quality or network stability.

Setting Recommendation
Video codec H.264
Audio codec AAC
Rate control CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
Audio, stereo 44.1 kHz sample rate; 128 Kbps
Audio, 5.1 48 kHz sample rate; 384 Kbps. YouTube lists 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS only with AAC.

Use RTMPS where your FFmpeg build and YouTube Live setup support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS and describes it as a secure extension of RTMP that encrypts data on the way into and through Google’s servers: YouTube live encoder settings.

Choose a video bitrate for your resolution and frame rate

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations differ by both resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not total upload requirements or promises that a connection can sustain them.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

Keep the output resolution and frame rate within what your source and upload connection can handle. YouTube publishes additional resolution and frame-rate combinations in its encoder guidance; consult that table if you plan a setting not shown above. Leave headroom in your connection rather than treating the recommended video bitrate as a safe minimum upload speed.

Build the FFmpeg command around your input

FFmpeg’s general command structure places input options before the input, then output options before the output destination. Options normally apply to the next input or output, so put encoding settings after -i and before the YouTube RTMPS URL. The example below shows the shape of a file-to-live command; it is a template, not a universal, tested command. Replace the input path, frame rate, bitrate, encoder and destination with values for your setup.

ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -r 30 -b:v 14M -minrate 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

This sample assumes a file input, a 30 fps output, stereo audio, a 1080p target, and an FFmpeg build that includes libx264 and supports the RTMPS destination. Its 14 Mbps video bitrate matches YouTube’s 1080p30 recommendation verified on October 3, 2026. The GOP values of 60 frames correspond to two seconds at 30 fps. If you change the frame rate, change the GOP frame count accordingly: for example, 60 frames at 60 fps is one second, not two. YouTube specifies an interval in seconds, not an FFmpeg command.

The sample uses -re to read a file at its native rate rather than pushing it as fast as possible. For a live capture source or another real-time input, follow that input’s requirements instead of assuming this file-input option is appropriate. Select an H.264 encoder actually available in your FFmpeg build; builds differ, and this research does not establish which encoders or protocols are present in your installation.

Map the streams you intend to send

-map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream and -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream from input 0. This is useful when a file contains multiple video or audio streams, but it will fail if the requested stream is absent. Inspect the input and adjust the mapping, or omit explicit mapping when the default stream selection is suitable. FFmpeg documents stream mapping and option scope in its command-line manual.

Set bitrate control and keyframes for your frame rate

The example sets a target bitrate with -b:v, and matches minimum and maximum video bitrate using -minrate and -maxrate to approximate CBR behavior. Rate control details can vary by encoder, so check the selected encoder’s options. -g sets the GOP length in frames; for the shown 30 fps example, 60 frames is two seconds. The matching -keyint_min and disabled scene-cut keyframes keep the example’s GOP cadence predictable. If you use a different frame rate or encoder, confirm that its keyframe options produce the intended interval and stay within YouTube’s four-second maximum.

Encode audio and use the correct output destination

-c:a aac encodes audio as AAC, while -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 sets the example to YouTube’s listed 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz stereo settings. For 5.1, use the platform’s listed 48 kHz and 384 Kbps guidance and ensure the input and encoder actually provide 5.1 channels.

The final URL must use the RTMPS server address and stream key provided by your YouTube Live setup; YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST and YOUR_STREAM_KEY are placeholders, not a real endpoint. Do not publish or share your stream key. -f flv selects the output container used for this RTMP-style workflow. FFmpeg options must appear before that output URL.

Transcoding is not the same as streamcopy

Because this workflow converts media to H.264 and AAC, it needs encoding options such as -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac (or other available encoders). FFmpeg transcoding decodes and re-encodes streams, which is computationally costly and typically lossy. By contrast, -c copy passes encoded packets without decoding or re-encoding; it cannot turn a different video or audio codec into H.264 or AAC. Use streamcopy only when the existing codecs and stream format already meet the destination’s needs. See the FFmpeg manual for its explanation of transcoding, streamcopy and command syntax.

Test the stream before going live

  1. Check your FFmpeg build. Confirm it includes the H.264 and AAC encoders you plan to use and supports the RTMPS protocol and output format. Available encoders and protocols depend on the build; no specific minimum FFmpeg version is established here.
  2. Start a YouTube Live test. Set up the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and use its ingest details. Keep the stream key private.
  3. Run a representative sample. Test with movement and audio similar to the actual stream, not only a static image or silence. YouTube explicitly advises testing before the live stream.
  4. Check stream health and messages. Watch YouTube Live Control Room for ingest status and alerts. If health is poor, verify the selected resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe cadence, audio settings and available upload capacity before the event.

Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings and testing guidance for the current recommendations. The live-maintained page can change, so recheck it before an important broadcast.

Troubleshooting common FFmpeg-to-YouTube problems

  • “Unknown encoder” or encoder initialization fails: The selected encoder is not available in that FFmpeg build, or its configuration is incompatible. Check the encoders present in your local binary and choose an available H.264 or AAC encoder; do not assume every FFmpeg installation includes libx264.
  • RTMPS connection or protocol error: The installed build may lack the needed protocol support, or the destination address may be wrong. Confirm the RTMPS ingest details in YouTube Live and verify protocol support in your build. Use RTMPS when supported, as YouTube recommends.
  • YouTube receives video but no sound: Check that the input has an audio stream and that your mapping selects it. Confirm the AAC encoder runs and that the output channel count and sample rate match your intended stereo or 5.1 setup.
  • “Stream key” or ingest authentication failure: Recheck the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live. Treat the key as a credential; replace it if it has been exposed.
  • Stream health warnings or dropped frames: Compare output resolution, frame rate and bitrate with YouTube’s current table and assess whether your upload connection can sustain the output. A recommended bitrate does not guarantee a stable connection.
  • Keyframe interval warning: Convert the intended two-second interval into frames using the actual output frame rate. For instance, a GOP of 60 frames is two seconds at 30 fps but one second at 60 fps; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second ceiling.
  • Input option has no effect or an output option affects the wrong file: FFmpeg options are order-sensitive and generally apply to the next input or output. Put input-specific options before -i; place output codec, audio, video and muxing options after the input and before the destination.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or capture input, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and does not replace FFmpeg for a camera or other live input. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
