If the child is under 16, they cannot start a YouTube livestream on their own channel. YouTube requires livestream creators to be at least 16, and supervised child accounts also have channel creation and livestreaming turned off. A child under 16 may participate only in a stream hosted from an adult-owned account, with the adult visibly present and actively co-creating. For a creator aged 16 or older, streaming may be available after the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
Can a child-owned YouTube channel livestream?
| Situation | Can the channel start the stream? | What applies |
|---|---|---|
| Channel owner is under 16 | No. | YouTube’s minimum age for livestreaming is 16. The child may appear in a livestream hosted on an adult-owned account only if the adult is visibly present and co-creates. |
| Supervised child account | No. | YouTube turns off both channel creation and livestreaming for supervised child accounts. Changing the content setting does not enable either feature. |
| Channel owner is 16 or older | Potentially. | The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. The creator can then choose an available streaming method. |
YouTube’s current Help guidance, reviewed October 3, 2026, says a creator must be at least 16 to livestream: Get started with live streaming. Streams that fail to meet the minimum-age rule may be taken down, and the account may temporarily lose livestream access. YouTube also warns that streams featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult may have live chat disabled and other feature access restricted.
If the child is under 16: use the adult-host route
If a child under 16 is to appear live, YouTube’s stated option is for an adult-owned account to host the stream. The adult must be visibly present in the livestream and engage in it as much as the child; simply being nearby or lending account access is not enough. YouTube says the adult can be given editor, manager or owner access to a channel to start a stream through Live Control Room, but that permission does not make the child eligible to host independently. See Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.
Do not try to get around the age or account restrictions by changing a birth date or moving the stream to another channel. YouTube says using another channel to livestream while a restriction is active is circumvention and may lead to termination. A supervised child profile remains unable to create a channel or livestream, even when a parent manages it; YouTube distinguishes this from supervised teen accounts, which involve a teen Google Account and the teen’s own channel. That distinction does not change the 16-year minimum for livestreaming. Details: What is a supervised kid account on YouTube? and Understand your choices as a family.

Plan privacy and moderation before going live
- Do not share a full name, age, home location, school or phone number. Check the camera background for address, street or other identifying clues.
- Review privacy and embed settings with a parent or trusted adult. Agree on who will be present, who the child is streaming with, and how long the stream will last.
- Use moderation tools and, where appropriate, ask a trusted adult to moderate chat. Stop the stream and tell a trusted adult if someone makes the child uncomfortable.
These are among the minor-safety recommendations in YouTube’s live-streaming guidance at Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.
If the channel owner is 16 or older: check eligibility and start
- Confirm the channel is verified. YouTube requires channel verification before livestreaming.
- Check for restrictions. The channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. If a restriction is active, do not use another channel to bypass it; YouTube treats that as circumvention.
- Choose a method. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder and supported game-console streaming. A computer webcam is needed only for the webcam method.
- For webcam streaming, open the webcam setup. Sign in to YouTube, select Create → Go Live → Webcam, enter the title and description, choose privacy, confirm the selected camera and microphone, then select Go Live. Follow the controls currently displayed in YouTube, since interface labels can change. See Create a live stream via webcam.
- Review visibility before starting. For creators aged 13–17, YouTube says webcam-stream privacy defaults to private. The creator can choose public, private or unlisted; discuss the choice and its implications with a parent or trusted adult before changing it.
“Made for kids” is a separate setting
The audience designation does not change the creator’s age eligibility. If a livestream or channel is designated “made for kids,” YouTube disables live chat, chat replay, Super Chat, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled for livestreams and Premieres, although contextual ads may appear. Choose the audience setting to reflect the content and applicable YouTube rules—not to try to restore features. YouTube explains these limits in Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.
