How to Enable Spotify Lossless Audio on iPhone, Mac, and Windows PC

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To enable Spotify Lossless: open Spotify, go to Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Media quality, then choose Lossless for Wi-Fi streaming, cellular streaming, downloads, or each option you want. You need an eligible Premium account, a supported app version, and—if you want to preserve the signal without Bluetooth compression—a wired or compatible Spotify Connect playback path.

On iPhone, Spotify requires app version 9.0.58 or later. On a Mac or Windows PC, use the installed desktop app, which Spotify lists as requiring version 1.2.67 or later. The setting may need to be enabled separately on each device.

Enable Lossless on an iPhone

  1. Open the Spotify app and sign in to an eligible Premium account.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Tap Settings and privacy.
  4. Open Media quality.
  5. Set Lossless for Wi-Fi streaming, Cellular streaming, Downloads, or all three.
  6. Play a music track and check the Now Playing screen or playback bar for the Lossless indicator.

Spotify treats Wi-Fi streaming, cellular streaming, and downloads as separate controls. Choosing Lossless for streaming does not automatically make tracks that are already stored on your phone lossless. If you enable Lossless downloads, Spotify may prompt you to update existing downloads.

Lossless applies to music. Spotify says it is not available for music videos, podcasts, or audiobooks. The option may also need to be enabled manually on each device where you use Spotify. See Spotify’s current Lossless audio quality instructions for the latest device and account requirements.

Enable Lossless on a Mac or Windows PC

Use the installed Spotify desktop application rather than the web player.

  1. Open the Spotify desktop app.
  2. Select your profile picture.
  3. Open Settings and privacy.
  4. Find Media quality or the desktop audio-quality controls.
  5. Choose Lossless for the streaming and download options you want to change.

Spotify’s interface labels can vary slightly between desktop app versions. Its general audio-quality documentation describes the route as Profile picture → Settings → Audio Quality, while the dedicated Lossless page uses Settings and privacy → Media quality. In either case, look for the Lossless control in the audio or media-quality section. Spotify lists desktop app version 1.2.67 or later for Lossless support.

Why the web player is not the right choice

The web player is not the preferred route if your goal is Spotify Lossless. Spotify’s audio-quality table lists the Premium web player at AAC 256 kbit/s, while it lists Lossless for the Premium desktop, mobile, and tablet apps at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. Install and update the desktop app on macOS or Windows instead. See Spotify’s audio-quality documentation for the current comparison.

What you need before Lossless appears

  • Premium: Lossless is a Premium feature. Spotify specifically advertises lossless listening as part of Premium Individual, but eligibility and availability can vary by account and market.
  • Current app: Spotify lists mobile app version 9.0.58 or later and desktop app version 1.2.67 or later.
  • Supported market and device: Spotify began rolling Lossless out in selected markets in September 2025 and said in October 2025 that it was available to Premium users in more than 50 markets. A missing option may therefore indicate account, market, device, or rollout availability rather than a hardware fault.
  • Supported content: Not every type of Spotify content is eligible. Lossless is for music, and the original recording and track availability also affect whether a particular song can play in Lossless.
  • A stable connection: Spotify recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection for the best Lossless experience.

Spotify’s general app requirements currently list iOS 16.1 or later, macOS 12.0 or later, and Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 or later. Those are general Spotify app requirements, not a guarantee that every device, accessory, or connection path will deliver Lossless. Check Spotify’s supported-device requirements if the app will not install or update.

How to tell whether Lossless is active

Start a music track after changing the setting, then look for the Lossless label or indicator in Spotify’s Now Playing view or playback bar. Spotify says the indicator can also appear in the Connect Picker.

The setting alone is not a guarantee that every track or playback route is delivering lossless audio. Spotify identifies several factors that can affect playback: the original recording, whether the content is available in Lossless, the device, the connection type, and network stability. Verify the indicator while the song is actually playing.

Bluetooth is convenient, but it is not Spotify’s lossless path

Spotify says Bluetooth does not currently provide enough bandwidth to transmit its Lossless audio without compression. That means AirPods and ordinary Bluetooth headphones should not be described as a lossless solution for Spotify, even when the Lossless setting is enabled in the app.

Bluetooth can still sound good and remain the most convenient option. The point is narrower: if your goal is to preserve the lossless signal as far as possible, use wired headphones or speakers, an external DAC or audio interface, or a compatible Spotify Connect device over a non-Bluetooth connection.

If you want to avoid Bluetooth compression, consider wired headphones for Spotify Lossless. Match the headphones to your phone or computer connector, and remember that headphones alone do not prove that the entire chain is lossless.

Best connection choices for iPhone

Wired headphones

An iPhone without a traditional headphone jack may need a compatible wired adapter or USB DAC. Check all three connections before buying anything:

  • the connector on the iPhone;
  • the connector on the headphones; and
  • whether the adapter or DAC supports the intended audio connection.

A USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter for iPhone can be useful when the phone has USB-C and the headphones have a standard 3.5 mm plug. Verify the exact iPhone connector and adapter compatibility first. An adapter enables a wired route; it does not by itself prove that every component, source recording, and playback device is operating losslessly.

Spotify Connect

A compatible Spotify Connect speaker, receiver, or other network audio device can provide a non-Bluetooth route. Spotify says Lossless is supported on some third-party devices, but compatibility is device-specific. Change the quality setting while connected to the device, keep its firmware current, and confirm Lossless support with the device manufacturer.

If you are choosing network equipment, look for a Spotify Connect-compatible speaker or receiver, but do not assume that every product marketed as Spotify Connect supports Lossless. Confirm both Spotify and manufacturer documentation for the exact model.

Windows: using Exclusive mode with a DAC or audio interface

The Windows desktop app offers an additional option for Premium users who connect a compatible external DAC or audio interface. Exclusive mode gives Spotify full control of the selected audio device.

  1. Connect the external DAC or audio interface.
  2. In Windows, select it as the playback device.
  3. In Spotify’s desktop audio settings, enable Exclusive mode if the option is available.
  4. Play music and check for the Lossless indicator.

Spotify recommends disabling volume normalization, equalizer, Automix, and crossfade when pursuing the purest playback path. These processing features may be useful for ordinary listening, but disabling them reduces additional processing in this particular setup.

Exclusive mode is not available for Bluetooth devices, built-in computer speakers, or virtual audio devices. While Spotify has exclusive control, other applications may be unable to use that audio device. Spotify’s Exclusive mode support page explains the limitations and setup requirements.

A USB DAC for Spotify Lossless is optional, not mandatory. It can be appropriate for a PC or iPhone wired setup, but no DAC can overcome an unavailable Lossless track, an unsupported device, or a Bluetooth link later in the chain.

Downloads, data, and storage

Lossless downloads are controlled separately from streaming. If you want offline music in Lossless:

  1. Open Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Media quality.
  2. Set Downloads to Lossless.
  3. If Spotify offers to update existing downloads, accept the update for the tracks you want replaced.

Lossless downloads and streaming can use more data and storage than lower-quality settings. On cellular data, use Wi-Fi if your data allowance is limited. On a phone or computer with limited free space, check available storage before replacing a large offline library. Spotify’s documentation does not provide one universal storage figure for every library, so the actual requirement depends on the number and length of downloaded tracks and the app’s current implementation.

Troubleshooting Spotify Lossless

The Lossless option is missing

  1. Confirm that the account has an eligible Premium plan.
  2. Update the mobile app to version 9.0.58 or later, or the desktop app to version 1.2.67 or later.
  3. Check whether Lossless has reached your account and market.
  4. Try the installed mobile or desktop app rather than the web player.
  5. Sign out and back in, then check Settings and privacy → Media quality again.

If the option still does not appear, the likely issue is account, market, app, or device availability—not necessarily the headphones or computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lossless is selected, but playback buffers or stutters

Check Wi-Fi or cellular stability first. Spotify recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection for the best Lossless experience. Move closer to the router, stop other high-bandwidth activity, or try another stable network. If playback remains unreliable, lower the streaming quality manually; uninterrupted playback is more useful than a setting that repeatedly buffers.

Bluetooth is connected

Do not use the Lossless label as proof that Bluetooth is transmitting an uncompressed signal. Spotify says Bluetooth compresses the signal before transmission. Switch to wired headphones, speakers, an external DAC, or a compatible non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect device if preserving the lossless path is important.

Downloaded tracks are not Lossless

Streaming and downloads have separate settings. Set Downloads to Lossless and update existing downloads when Spotify presents that option. Tracks already stored at another quality do not necessarily change merely because streaming quality was changed.

A third-party speaker or receiver is not showing Lossless

Connect to the device, change the quality setting while it is active, update its firmware, and check the model’s Lossless compatibility with the manufacturer. Spotify supports Lossless on some third-party devices, not automatically on every speaker or receiver that supports Spotify Connect.

Windows audio behaves unexpectedly

Confirm that the external DAC or audio interface is selected as the Windows playback device. If using Exclusive mode, remember that Spotify has full control of the device and other applications may be blocked from using it. Exclusive mode will not work with Bluetooth, built-in speakers, or virtual audio devices.

Does Spotify Lossless sound better?

Lossless provides higher technical fidelity, but it does not guarantee a dramatic audible improvement for every listener. The result depends on the recording, playback equipment, listening environment, and the listener. A wired connection and capable equipment remove one source of additional compression, but they cannot make a poorly recorded track sound like a different master.

For many people, the practical benefits are the cleanest possible source and the ability to avoid additional Bluetooth compression—not a promise that every song will sound obviously different. Use the Lossless indicator to confirm the delivery path, then decide whether the extra data, storage, and equipment are worthwhile for your listening habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Spotify Lossless free?

No. Spotify identifies Lossless as a Premium feature. Availability also depends on the account, market, app version, device, and rollout status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I get Spotify Lossless through the web player?

The web player is not the recommended route. Spotify lists the Premium web player at AAC 256 kbit/s, while Lossless is listed for Premium mobile, tablet, and desktop apps. Use the installed Spotify app instead.

Are AirPods lossless with Spotify?

Spotify says Bluetooth currently compresses the signal, so AirPods and ordinary Bluetooth headphones should not be treated as a lossless Spotify playback solution. Use wired equipment or a compatible non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect device when preserving the lossless path is the goal.

Why did changing streaming quality not change my downloads?

Spotify has separate controls for Wi-Fi streaming, cellular streaming, and downloads. Set Downloads to Lossless and update existing downloads if Spotify offers that prompt.

Does every Spotify song play in Lossless?

No guarantee applies to every track. Spotify says the original recording, content availability, device, connection type, and network stability can affect whether playback is delivered in Lossless.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

On iPhone, open Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Media quality and choose Lossless for the specific streaming or download options you need. On Mac or Windows, make the same change in the installed desktop app. Then verify the Lossless indicator while playing music. For the best chance of preserving the signal, use wired audio or compatible Spotify Connect rather than Bluetooth, and lower the quality if Lossless causes buffering.
