To edit subtitles, choose where they need to appear, correct the words against the audio, adjust each caption’s timing, preview the result, and publish or export it in a format your destination accepts. For a video already on YouTube, you can make those changes in YouTube Studio; for a video in an editor such as Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, work with its caption track and export options.
Choose how viewers will receive the subtitles
Decide on delivery before editing. A separate caption track or sidecar file can be switched on or off and kept apart from the video image. Burned-in subtitles are rendered into the picture and cannot be toggled off by the viewer. Check the destination’s accepted formats and whether it supports a separate language track before exporting.
- Use a separate track or file when viewers or the platform should be able to select or hide captions.
- Burn subtitles into the video when the delivery brief calls for visible text in the image itself.
Adobe’s Premiere documentation describes SRT sidecar export and burned-in output. Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve product information lists separate TTML, SRT, and VTT exports as well as rendering subtitles into the finished video. Those listed formats should not be taken to mean every container or workflow supports them; confirm compatibility with the receiving platform.
How to edit subtitles in YouTube Studio
YouTube Studio lets you edit caption wording and timing on a video’s language track, or download the caption file, edit it, and upload the revision. The interface labels may change over time; the steps below follow YouTube Help’s documented workflow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open YouTube Studio and select Subtitles from the left menu.
- Select the video, then choose the language track you want to change. If the language track does not exist yet, add subtitles for that language first.
- Choose the caption track’s edit option. Select a caption line to change its text; use the timing fields for that line to adjust when it appears and disappears.
- Play the video from before the caption starts through the end of the spoken phrase. Correct the text and timing as needed, then check nearby captions for overlaps or gaps.
- Select Publish to apply the changes.
YouTube Help also documents downloading a caption track, editing it in a plain-text editor, and uploading the revised file. That route can be useful for editing timestamps or many lines, but preserve the file’s timestamp and formatting syntax when making changes.
How to correct a transcript or automatic captions
Treat automatic transcription as a draft, not a verified transcript. YouTube’s help guidance describes duplicating and editing an automatically created track. In Premiere Pro, Adobe’s caption tutorial has the editor review and correct the generated transcript before creating captions from it.

- Listen while reading the transcript, following the video rather than correcting from memory.
- Check names, place names, specialist or documentary terminology, dates, numbers, and acronyms against the audio and any reliable project references.
- Replay noisy passages, overlapping speech, accents, music under dialogue, and quiet words. Mark speech as unintelligible only when you cannot reasonably establish what was said.
- Check punctuation and speaker changes so the text remains faithful to what is audible; do not silently rewrite a speaker’s meaning.
For documentaries, proper names and technical terms can be especially easy to mishear. If the intended spelling is known from the production material, use it consistently, but do not use context to replace a word that the audio does not support.
How to fix subtitle timing
Each caption has a start and end time. A line should appear with the speech it represents, remain long enough to read, and clear before it becomes misleading or belongs to the next speaker or shot. YouTube Studio exposes timestamp fields for a selected caption; YouTube Help also documents downloading a file to edit timestamps and uploading it again.

- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Find the first audible word or sound the caption represents and set the start time so the caption does not appear noticeably early.
- Set the end time after the final word represented, without letting the caption run into unrelated dialogue.
- Review adjoining lines for overlap, an unintended gap, or a caption that remains on screen after the speaker has changed.
- Play the full sequence at normal speed after timing edits. Scrubbing or stepping through frames can help locate a boundary, but normal playback is needed to judge the result in context.
These checks are practical editing guidance rather than a platform-specific timing standard. Follow any timing or reading-speed requirements in your delivery brief.
How to style and export subtitles in an editor
Adobe Premiere Pro
Adobe’s documented workflow is to transcribe the audio, review and edit the transcript, create captions, then adjust caption appearance. Its tutorial describes changing font, size, and color in the Properties panel. Premiere’s caption overview documents both SRT sidecar export and burned-in captions. Menu names and availability can differ by version.

DaVinci Resolve
Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve Edit product page lists subtitle imports including TTML, SRT, XML, and embedded MXF/IMF subtitles. It lists TTML, SRT, or VTT export, and an option to render subtitles into the finished video. These are the formats and routes described for that product page, not a guarantee for every Resolve version, container, or delivery setup.
Check the result before delivery
- Confirm that the exported file or rendered video is the version you intend to deliver.
- For a sidecar file, make sure it remains associated with the correct video and language track.
- Check that text is readable against bright, dark, and visually busy shots. Premiere’s documented controls include font, size, and color; use styling appropriate to the footage and delivery brief.
- Preview the exported result, not only the editing timeline, to catch missing captions, incorrect timing, or a format the destination does not accept.
Which subtitle editing route should you use?
| Route | What the cited official documentation describes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio | Add a language track; edit caption text and timestamps; download a track for plain-text editing and upload the revision. | A video managed on YouTube when you want to edit its hosted captions. |
| Adobe Premiere Pro | Review and edit a transcript, create captions on the timeline, style them, and export burned-in captions or an SRT sidecar. | A project already being edited in Premiere, or a delivery that needs its documented caption workflow. |
| DaVinci Resolve | Import listed timed-text formats including TTML, SRT, and XML; export TTML, SRT, or VTT separately, or render subtitles into the video. | A Resolve project that needs one of the formats or output routes listed by Blackmagic Design. |
Choose by destination compatibility, whether captions must be switchable, required file format, and the software already used in the project. The cited documentation does not establish a universal best editor or support claims about relative transcription accuracy, speed, ease, or accessibility compliance.
