The short answer: open your podcast app while you have an internet connection, choose an episode, and tap or click Download. Wait for the completed-download indicator, then open the app’s Downloaded, Library, or Offline section and play the episode with Wi-Fi and cellular data turned off.
Most podcast downloads are app-managed offline copies—not ordinary MP3 files that can be freely moved to another service or device. The exact process, storage rules, and offline time limits depend on the app.
Before you download: saved is not always downloaded
Podcast apps use different labels for bookmarks, follows, saved episodes, and offline downloads. A saved episode may only be added to a list, while a downloaded episode has been stored locally for playback without an internet connection. In some versions of Apple Podcasts, saving or following a show can also trigger an automatic download, but you should still verify the download status before traveling.
For a reliable offline test:
- Connect to Wi-Fi and download the episode.
- Wait until the app shows a completed-download icon or lists the episode in its downloaded area.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data, or enable Airplane Mode.
- Start the episode and play at least several seconds.
If it plays while the device is offline, the episode is ready. This test also reveals whether the app requires an account check or periodic reconnection.

Apple Podcasts on iPhone and iPad
- Open Apple Podcasts while connected to the internet.
- Search for a show and open its episode list.
- Touch and hold the episode you want.
- Choose Download.
- Confirm it appears under Library > Downloaded.
Apple Podcasts can automatically download new episodes from shows you follow. This is convenient for a regular commute, but it can consume storage and download episodes you do not intend to keep. Review the Podcasts settings if you prefer to download episodes manually or want to limit how many are retained.
Apple Podcasts settings worth checking
- Automatic downloads: Following a show can cause its newest episodes to download automatically. Disable or limit this behavior if storage or mobile data is a concern.
- Video podcasts: Audio may be downloaded by default even when a podcast also contains video. Enable video downloads separately if you need the visual version offline.
- Remove Played Downloads: Apple can automatically remove played downloads after 24 hours unless this cleanup behavior is turned off. If you are preparing several episodes for a trip, check this setting so an episode is not removed sooner than expected.
Before a flight or remote journey, use Library > Downloaded, enable Airplane Mode, and play one episode as a final check.
Spotify
- Open the podcast or individual episode in Spotify.
- Select the Download control.
- Wait for the download indicator to finish.
- Open Spotify’s downloaded content or enable Offline Mode.
Spotify’s current offline rules distinguish between podcasts and other content: Premium users can download albums, playlists, and podcasts, while free users can download podcasts. Offline Mode is useful when you want Spotify to play only content already stored on the device rather than trying to stream over a weak connection.
Spotify limitations
- You must go online at least once every 30 days to retain and use downloads.
- Reinstalling Spotify removes the local downloads; you will need to download them again.
- Downloads are supported on up to five devices. If you exceed the device limit, downloads may be removed from the least recently used device.
- Spotify recommends keeping about 1 GB of free storage when troubleshooting download problems.
- Downloads over cellular data can be enabled, but Wi-Fi is the safer default if your mobile plan has a data allowance.
A dependable Spotify travel routine is: download on Wi-Fi, confirm the completed icon, enable Offline Mode, and reconnect at least monthly if you need to keep the episodes for a longer period.

Pocket Casts
Pocket Casts supports offline downloads in its iOS and Android apps. You can download episodes individually or in bulk, configure automatic downloads for new episodes or playlists, and restrict automatic downloads to Wi-Fi.
Download in the mobile app
- Open a podcast or playlist.
- Select an episode and choose the download control. For multiple episodes, use the app’s bulk-download options where available.
- Open the Downloads area to confirm the episode is present.
- Use the Downloads area to find failed downloads, remove old episodes, or manage storage.
Pocket Casts also provides controls for download limits, cleanup, and—on supported Android versions—waiting until sufficient storage is available before downloading. Automatic downloads can be restricted to Wi-Fi to avoid unexpected data use.
Mobile downloads versus transferable files
Pocket Casts is unusual among the apps covered here because it clearly separates an app-managed mobile download from an episode file that you download for use elsewhere. Mobile downloads remain inside Pocket Casts for offline playback. The web and desktop players generally require an active internet connection for normal playback, but Pocket Casts can provide a Download File option that saves an episode for another media player.
A file played outside Pocket Casts will not automatically synchronize its playback position back to your Pocket Casts account. You also need to check the file format supported by the destination device. If you want to listen without carrying a phone, a portable MP3 player for downloaded podcast files can be an option—but only when you have a genuinely transferable episode file and the player supports its format. An app-only download from Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or another service generally cannot simply be copied to that player.
YouTube Music
- Open the podcast and go to the episode detail page.
- Select Download.
- Wait for the episode to finish downloading.
- Open the app’s downloaded content and test playback with connectivity disabled.
Google says podcast episodes can be downloaded in YouTube Music regardless of membership status. However, particular episodes or shows may not offer an audio-only download. Download capacity depends on free device storage, episode length, and selected audio or video quality.

YouTube Music restrictions
- The device must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to maintain downloads.
- Full-show downloads and Smart Downloads are currently unavailable for podcasts according to the relevant support documentation; select individual episodes instead.
- Podcast downloads are usually app-managed and should not be expected to appear as ordinary files in the device’s file manager.
YouTube Music can also download music and podcasts to supported Wear OS watches. This makes offline listening possible without carrying the phone, provided the watch model and app version support the feature.
Do not install Google Podcasts for a new setup. Google migrated Google Podcasts listeners toward YouTube Music and provided an OPML-export route for people moving to another podcast app.
Downloading podcasts on a computer
Desktop support differs sharply between services:

For a computer-based trip workflow, download while online, identify whether the app has exported an actual audio file, and open that file in the player you plan to use. Test it before leaving. A streaming-service download may be encrypted or stored in a protected application folder, so it may not be visible in File Explorer or Finder and may not play in VLC or on a dedicated player.
Storage, quality, and mobile-data management
Offline audio uses local storage. Video episodes use considerably more space, and download capacity is affected by episode length, quality settings, and available storage. YouTube Music explicitly ties download capacity to these factors. Spotify recommends around 1 GB of free space when troubleshooting, while Pocket Casts offers storage and cleanup controls.

- Use Wi-Fi: Download large batches at home, at work, or somewhere with reliable Wi-Fi.
- Prefer audio: If you only need to listen, avoid downloading a video version.
- Limit automation: Set a maximum number of automatic downloads or restrict them to Wi-Fi.
- Clean up: Delete played, expired, or unwanted episodes regularly.
- Keep spare space: Do not fill the device completely; the operating system and other apps need free storage.
- Check expandable storage carefully: A microSD card helps only if the phone, tablet, watch, or player supports it and the podcast app can use that storage. It does not convert protected app downloads into transferable files.
If a computer is full because you exported many podcast files, begin with the operating system’s built-in storage settings and remove unnecessary downloads and temporary files. A third-party Windows disk-space cleanup tool may be relevant in that specific situation, but it is not required for ordinary podcast downloads and should not replace checking which files are safe to delete.

How to prepare podcasts before a flight or road trip
- Choose the app and sign in: Do this while you still have a connection.
- Select specific episodes: Do not rely only on a queue that may refresh or change automatically.
- Download on Wi-Fi: Check the app’s cellular-download setting first.
- Wait for completion: Verify the download icon or the app’s Downloaded listing.
- Check automatic cleanup: Apple’s Remove Played Downloads setting can affect retention; other apps may have their own limits.
- Test offline playback: Turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data, or enable Airplane Mode, then play several seconds.
- Plan for expiration: Spotify and YouTube Music require reconnection at least every 30 days to maintain downloads.
For long journeys, headphones for offline podcast listening are an optional accessory, not a requirement. A portable power bank for travel listening can extend battery life during a day away from outlets, but it does not improve the download itself.

- Check the connection: Try a stable Wi-Fi network and confirm other apps can reach the internet.
- Check free space: Delete unwanted episodes, videos, photos, or exported files. Leave additional room for normal device operation.
- Check data settings: The app may be configured to download only over Wi-Fi, or your device may restrict background data.
- Check the episode: Some shows or episodes may not support downloads, audio-only downloads, or downloads in your region.
- Update the app: An outdated app can have download or authentication problems.
- Retry the episode: Remove the failed item and download it again rather than repeatedly tapping a stalled control.
- Reconnect when required: Spotify and YouTube Music have 30-day online-check requirements.
- Reauthenticate only as a last resort: Signing out or reinstalling can remove local downloads, especially in Spotify, so be prepared to download the episodes again.
What downloaded podcasts are—and are not
For most services, “downloaded” means “available for offline playback inside this app.” It does not necessarily mean you own an MP3 file, can move the episode to another app, or can keep playing it after the service’s account and licensing checks expire.
If you need a file for a separate player, look for an explicit file-download or export function. Pocket Casts documents this workflow for episode files. Even then, verify the destination player’s supported formats and transfer method. A dedicated player is not a universal solution for app-managed downloads.
