No—Spotify Free does not officially let you download songs, albums, or playlists for offline listening. Spotify’s current offline-listening rules reserve music downloads for Premium. On the Free plan, you may be able to download eligible podcast episodes, but that does not include Spotify’s music catalog.
If you need offline access to Spotify’s catalog, Spotify Premium for offline listening is the official route. If you want ordinary MP3, FLAC, or other transferable files, you need to obtain them lawfully from a source that grants download rights; Spotify Free cannot turn streamed songs into files.

Option 1: Download an eligible podcast for offline listening
Spotify Free generally allows podcast downloads, although Spotify notes that some shows may require Premium. This is the one built-in offline-download option that may be available to Free users.
- Open Spotify and find the podcast episode or show.
- Open the episode or show page.
- Look for the download control—usually a downward-arrow icon or a menu item labeled Download.
- After the download completes, open your library or the podcast’s page and play the downloaded episode while offline.
If there is no download control, the episode or show may not be eligible on your account, the feature may not be available in your region, or Spotify may require Premium for that content. Podcast downloads do not provide a way to save the show’s music tracks as separate audio files.
Option 2: Play music files you already have through Local Files
Spotify’s Local Files feature can play audio that is already stored on your computer or mobile device. It does not download Spotify songs. It is useful for music you purchased as downloadable files, recordings you created, or other audio you are legally authorized to copy and play.
On a computer
- Open the Spotify desktop app.
- Open your profile menu or the app’s settings.
- Find the Local Files section and enable the option to show audio files from your device.
- Select or add the folders where your authorized audio files are stored.
- Open Your Library and choose Local Files to view the available tracks.
The exact settings wording can change between Spotify desktop versions. If a file does not appear, confirm that it is in one of the selected folders, that Spotify supports its format, and that the file can be opened normally outside Spotify.
On a phone or tablet
Spotify also provides Local Files settings for mobile devices. In the Spotify app, open Settings and privacy, find the section for local files or local audio, and enable access to audio stored on the device. The label and available controls can differ between Android and iPhone/iPad versions.

When prompted, allow Spotify to access the relevant device media or files. Your authorized local tracks should then appear in the app’s Local Files area or in a playlist containing those files. On some devices, you may need to place the audio in a location that Spotify can access and grant the app permission to read it.
Important: Local Files does not make a Spotify stream downloadable. The file must already exist on your device, and you must have the legal right to possess, copy, and play it. The fact that a track can be played in Spotify does not establish permission to copy it.
Option 3: Use a lawful music-download source when you want ownership
There are two different goals that are often confused:
- Offline access inside Spotify: Spotify controls the download and playback environment. For catalog music, this requires Premium.
- Ownership of a transferable audio file: You obtain an MP3, FLAC, WAV, or another file from a source that explicitly grants download rights, then store and play it yourself.
If your goal is the second one, look for music sold or provided with clear permission to download and use the file. DRM-free music files are generally more flexible than files tied to a particular application, but the seller’s license still controls what you may do with them. You may be able to add such files to Spotify Local Files, provided you have the necessary rights.
Do not assume that an audio file is lawful merely because it can be downloaded, converted, or imported into Spotify. Read the source’s licensing terms, particularly if you intend to copy the file to multiple devices, share it, use it in a documentary or other video, or redistribute it.

Why Spotify Premium downloads are not ordinary music files
Premium’s download feature is an in-app offline-listening function, not an MP3 export facility. Spotify stores downloaded music in a controlled, encrypted form rather than presenting it as a normal file that you can move to a USB drive or play in another music application.
Spotify also says that a device must connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active. The downloads are therefore tied to the service, account, and app—not permanently owned files. If your subscription ends or Spotify removes access to a track, the offline access can end as well.

Do not use Spotify rippers or modified apps
Websites and applications that promise to “download Spotify songs without Premium” commonly involve stream ripping, recording, unauthorized copying, modified clients, or attempts to extract cached data. Those methods are not legitimate Spotify Free features, and they can expose you to malware, misleading download buttons, account theft, or poor-quality files.
Spotify’s User Guidelines prohibit copying, reproducing, redistributing, ripping, recording, transferring, or otherwise using Spotify content unless the applicable agreement or law expressly permits it. The guidelines also prohibit transferring cached content between devices and bypassing technical measures used by Spotify or its licensors. Account violations may result in content removal or suspension or termination.
That means this article does not recommend:
- Spotify-ripping websites or browser extensions that capture streams;
- cracked Spotify clients, modified APKs, or patched desktop applications;
- screen recording intended to create permanent music files;
- extracting or transferring Spotify cache files;
- using an audio recorder to make copies of Spotify catalog tracks; or
- account-sharing schemes intended to bypass Spotify’s plan restrictions.
