You can download movies for offline viewing in Plex when they’re stored in a personal Plex Media Server library. Plex’s Downloads feature generally requires Plex Pass on the downloading account (with an exception for qualifying Plex Home users), and it works in Plex’s supported mobile and desktop apps. It does not download movies from Plex’s free streaming catalog, live TV, or rental catalog.
First, check where the movie comes from
Plex uses “download” for two different workflows: its app-managed Downloads feature for personal media, and the Plex Web App’s option to download a source file to a computer. Neither makes Plex’s commercial streaming catalog available offline.

Check requirements before starting
- Use a supported app: Plex lists Android, iOS, Plex for Linux, Plex for Mac, and Plex for Windows. Offline Downloads are not generally available as this feature in smart-TV apps, Roku, Apple TV, game-console apps, or browser-only playback.
- Sign in to the right account: The app must be signed in to the Plex account that can access the server and library.
- Check Plex Pass: Plex’s current guidance generally requires an active Plex Pass on the account downloading. Managed users in a Plex Home may qualify when the Home administrator has Plex Pass. Account arrangements and app versions can matter; see the current Downloads requirements if your setup differs.
- For a shared library, confirm permission: The server owner may need to allow downloads for your account. Streaming access alone does not guarantee download permission.
- Update the server and app: Plex’s current mobile guidance requires Plex Media Server 1.41.2 or newer for iOS and Android Downloads. The desktop Downloads guidance specifies server version 1.16.3 or newer. Update the client app as well; mobile controls can vary between app experiences. See Plex’s mobile and desktop requirements.
- Allow enough storage: Original-quality files can be large. Choose a lower quality if storage or download time is a concern.
Download on iPhone or iPad
- Open the current Plex app and sign in.
- Open the movie’s details page in a personal Plex Media Server library.
- Tap Download or the Download icon. If prompted, choose a quality; otherwise, the app uses its configured default.
- Open the user menu and choose Downloads to check progress.
- Wait until the movie is marked complete, then play it from Downloads.
The current mobile Downloads workflow supports individual movies and episodes. Full-show or full-season downloads may not be available in that experience. Plex may transcode a movie to make it usable on the device; selecting “Original” does not guarantee that conversion will be avoided if the device cannot play the source as-is. Download on Android
- Open the current Plex Android app and sign in to the account with library access.
- Open a movie from your personal server, then tap Download.
- Choose the quality and storage settings if prompted.
- Track the job in Downloads.
- When it is complete, play the movie from the Downloads library.
Some Android devices let you choose an SD card as the download location, and Plex also provides a storage limit setting. Changing the location can delete downloads stored in the previous location, so check before switching. The mobile Downloads guide describes the current controls.
Download on Windows, macOS, or Linux
Use the standalone Plex desktop app for app-managed offline playback. Plex lists desktop Downloads for Windows, Mac, and Linux; Plex’s desktop installation guidance covers the Windows and macOS apps.

- Install and open the Plex desktop app, then sign in to the account connected to the server.
- Find the movie. Hover over its poster or open its pre-play screen, then open the context menu.
- Select Download.
- Set the desired download quality in the app’s settings before starting if you do not want the default.
- Open Downloads to monitor the transfer and play the completed movie.
Desktop Downloads also support other video and TV content, subject to the app’s options. Plex’s desktop Downloads guide lists the controls and behavior.
What the Plex Web App’s Download action does
The browser’s Download action is distinct from the offline Downloads library in Plex’s desktop app. When signed in to the same Plex account used by the Plex Media Server, the Web App may offer an action to download the source file to the computer, using the browser’s ordinary download behavior. It is not the same app-managed offline workflow. See Plex’s Web App download instructions.

Where downloaded movies are stored
On desktop, Plex gives these default locations for its Downloads data:
- Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%PlexPlex Media ServerSync - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Plex/Plex Media Server/Sync/
Plex does not provide a normal setting to change the desktop download location. A symbolic link can redirect it, but that is an advanced workaround, not the standard setup. Plex also says manually placing files in the download directory will not make them appear in the Downloads library. For mobile, use the Plex app’s Downloads section rather than expecting an ordinary, freely transferable video file.

Play the movie without an internet connection
- While online, open Downloads and confirm the movie is fully downloaded—not queued or still preparing.
- Temporarily disconnect from Wi-Fi and mobile data, or enable Airplane Mode.
- Open Downloads and start the movie from its downloaded entry.
Opening the same title from the normal server library may make Plex stream it from the server instead of playing the offline copy. A completed download and an entry that merely appears in the queue are not the same thing. Plex calls out this playback distinction in its desktop Downloads guidance.

If Download is missing
- Verify the source: It must be personal media on a Plex Media Server, not a free streaming title, live-TV stream, or rental.
- Switch to a supported app: Try the Plex mobile or standalone desktop app rather than a TV app or browser-only playback.
- Check the account and subscription: Confirm you are signed in to the account with the required Plex Pass or qualifying Plex Home access.
- Ask the server owner about permissions: For a shared library, confirm downloads are allowed for your account.
- Update both ends: Check the server version against the platform-specific minimum and update the Plex app.
- Check whether the item is already queued or unavailable: A restricted item or one that is already in progress may not offer the action as expected.
If a download is stuck preparing
Plex may need to prepare or transcode the file before sending it. An unreachable server, inadequate server resources, a codec or compatibility issue, insufficient device storage, or changed library access can interrupt that work.

- Cancel the stalled job and confirm the server is online and reachable.
- Check server activity and free storage on the device.
- Try a lower download quality, which may reduce the amount of data and the work needed to prepare it.
- Update Plex Media Server and the client app, then retry.
- Try a shorter or smaller movie. If that succeeds, the issue may be specific to the original title or its conversion requirements.
- If the library is shared, confirm the owner still permits downloads.
If the download completes but will not play
- Start it from Downloads, not from the server library entry.
- Try downloading again at a lower quality.
- Check free space, delete an incomplete copy, and retry.
- Confirm the source movie remains available and your account still has access.
- If you have just installed or updated the app, open it while online before testing offline playback.
When Plex Downloads are not the right tool
Plex Downloads are for app-managed offline playback of eligible personal media, not a general-purpose “save as MP4” function. Plex may transcode or package media to suit the selected quality and device. If you own or are authorized to use the source file and need a normal file to move to another player or device, use that original file with a local file-transfer workflow instead. Do not expect a Plex mobile download to export as a portable video file.
Plex’s desktop documentation also says casting or flinging downloaded content to another Plex app is not supported. If your goal is offline playback on a television, use a local media player or connected storage rather than relying on Plex Downloads for casting.
Free movies and rentals are separate
Plex’s free, ad-supported catalog is not licensed for offline downloading, and Plex Pass does not make it downloadable. Plex rentals are also excluded from Downloads. Plex describes rentals in the United States and Canada as generally allowing 30 days to begin playback and 48 hours after playback begins; rental availability and terms can vary, so check the details for the title and region.
