Use the Netflix app, choose a title with a download option, tap Download, then open Downloads and tap Play later. You need an active, signed-in Netflix account, enough iPhone storage, a compatible app and iOS version, and a movie whose licensing allows downloads.
What you need before downloading
- The Netflix app: The supported iPhone workflow is inside Netflix, not Safari. Install or update it through the App Store. Netflix’s current iPhone and iPad guidance says the latest app requires iOS/iPadOS 18 or later. Previously downloaded app versions may be redownloadable on devices running iOS 12 or later, but an older iPhone may not be able to install the current app. See Netflix’s compatibility guidance at Netflix Help Center.
- An active membership and sign-in: Downloads are tied to your Netflix account and device. You must remain signed in to watch them offline.
- Free local storage: Downloaded video uses iPhone storage, not an exportable iCloud video file.
- Wi-Fi: Netflix recommends downloading over Wi-Fi to avoid cellular-data charges and reduce failed transfers.
- A permitted title: Streaming availability does not guarantee download availability.
Titles with an ad-supported experience require iOS/iPadOS 16 or later for downloads, according to Netflix’s device guidance.

How to download a Netflix movie on iPhone
- Connect the iPhone to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Open the Netflix app and sign in.
- Select the profile you intend to use.
- Tap Downloads.
- Tap See What You Can Download to browse eligible titles, or use Search to find a particular movie.
- Open the movie’s details page.
- Tap Download. For a movie, this is normally one button; television episodes instead have download controls beside individual episodes and may offer Download Season.
- Wait until the download finishes. Confirm that the movie appears in Downloads before leaving Wi-Fi.
Button placement can differ slightly by app version, profile, title and Netflix interface update. Netflix’s core procedure is documented at Netflix Help Center.
How to find movies that can be downloaded
Use Netflix’s download catalog
Open Downloads, then tap See What You Can Download. This is the clearest way to browse movies Netflix currently marks as eligible on your device and account.

Check a movie directly
Search for the movie or browse normally, open its details page, and look for the download icon or Download label. If it is absent, the title may not be licensed for offline use.
How to watch the movie without internet access
- Open the Netflix app while offline.
- Tap Downloads.
- Select the downloaded movie.
- Tap Play.
Downloads play inside Netflix. Netflix does not provide an official method for exporting them to Photos, Files, another video player or a computer. They are available on the device that downloaded them, and Netflix says any profile on that device can view them, subject to profile restrictions.

Before a flight or other long offline period, open the app once while connected and verify that the title appears under Downloads. Downloads expire after a period of time, and a title that has left Netflix may not be renewable. Details are in Netflix’s expiration guidance at Netflix Help Center.
How to delete a downloaded movie
- Open Netflix and tap Downloads.
- Find the movie.
- Tap the download-status checkmark or status control beside it.
- Tap Delete Download.
Deleting the title releases the local iPhone storage it was using. Removing or resetting the Netflix app deletes all downloads, so do not reinstall it casually when troubleshooting. Why a Netflix movie may not be downloadable
Netflix says download rights depend on licensing and territory. A movie may be streamable but excluded from downloads because another company has exclusive rights, the provider did not grant download rights, or popularity, cost, seasonal availability or other studio arrangements affect the catalog. A Netflix Original is not automatically downloadable. Netflix explains these factors at Netflix Help Center.
What to do when the Download button is missing
- Check the title first: If other movies download but this one has no icon, it may simply be ineligible.
- Update Netflix: Install the latest App Store version.
- Update iOS: An unsupported operating system can hide or prevent download features.
- Check storage: Free space in Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
- Check profile controls: A maturity restriction can prevent a title from appearing. The documented path is My Netflix → profile name → Manage Profiles → edit profile → Viewing Restrictions → Maturity Rating; see Netflix’s profile guidance.
- Check account and device limits: Another device or plan restriction may be blocking a new download.
Fix a failed download
- Confirm that the iPhone has sufficient free storage.
- Move to a stable Wi-Fi network.
- Update Netflix in the App Store.
- Update iOS.
- Delete the incomplete download and start it again.
- Restart Netflix, then restart the iPhone if necessary.
- Reinstall Netflix only as a last resort; this removes existing downloads and signs you out.

Fix an “Expired” download
First check the iPhone clock: open Settings → General → Date & Time and enable Set Automatically when appropriate. In Netflix, open Downloads, tap the status icon beside the expired title, choose Delete Download, return to the movie page and try again. If the movie has left Netflix, it may no longer be possible to renew it. Netflix’s instructions are at Netflix Help Center.

Optional: turn on Downloads for You
Downloads for You automatically saves recommended shows and movies over Wi-Fi. It is useful when you want a rotating offline selection rather than one specific film, but it consumes storage and is unavailable on ad-supported plans.
- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Tap App Settings.
- Under Downloads, tap Smart Downloads.
- Toggle Downloads for You on or off.
- Use the plus and minus controls to set the storage allocation.

What Netflix downloads cannot do
- They cannot be officially saved as ordinary video files in Photos or Files.
- They cannot be opened in a third-party player or transferred as a normal movie file to another iPhone.
- They are not permanent: expiration, catalog changes, licensing and plan limits can end access.
- They do not remove the need to stay signed in to Netflix.
Avoid third-party “Netflix downloaders,” converters and screen-recording services. They are not part of Netflix’s supported workflow and can create account, security, copyright and malware risks.
