To watch a film without internet, open the official app where you bought, rented, or stream it, then use that app’s download control. The saved copy normally stays inside the service’s app—not in Photos or as a freely transferable MP4.
Before you start
- Install the official app that holds the movie and sign in to the account with the purchase, rental, or subscription.
- Confirm that the specific title and your plan permit downloads. Rights vary by country, title, plan, and provider.
- Check local space at Settings > General > iPhone Storage. A download uses iPhone storage; extra iCloud storage does not automatically add offline space.
- Use Wi‑Fi for large downloads unless you deliberately enable cellular downloads.
- Update the app and iOS when a download control is missing or fails.
Keep the app installed and, where required, signed in. Netflix says downloaded viewing works without an internet connection but recommends remaining signed in to its mobile app (Netflix Help).
The universal download workflow
- Open the official store or streaming app.
- Search for the movie and open its detail page.
- Tap the downward-arrow or Download control, if shown.
- Choose quality, audio, or cellular settings when offered.
- Wait for the download to finish.
- Open Downloads, Library, or the provider’s equivalent.
- Temporarily turn off Wi‑Fi and cellular data and start playback to verify offline access.
Menu names change between app versions, so use the provider-specific paths below when they differ from this pattern.
Apple TV app
Purchased movie
- Open Apple TV.
- Tap Library and open the purchased movie.
- Tap Download.
- Find it later under Library > Downloaded.
Apple says purchased media can be downloaded to a compatible iPhone and watched without an internet connection. Redownload instructions are documented by Apple Support; library controls are described in Apple’s iPhone guide. A purchase remains tied to the Apple account and applicable rights; it is not a universally transferable video file.

Rented movie
- In Apple TV, search for the film and tap Rent.
- Complete payment, then open Library > Rentals.
- Tap the rental and choose Download.
Apple gives you 30 days to begin watching. Once playback starts, the rental lasts 48 hours, then is deleted. A rental can be downloaded on one device at a time under Apple’s rules (Apple rental rules).
Apple TV+ or an Apple TV channel
- Open the movie’s detail page in Apple TV.
- Tap Download.
- Use Library > Downloaded to play it offline.
Most Apple TV channel downloads remain available for up to 30 days, although a channel can set a shorter period. Supported titles and download limits vary (Apple’s download guidance). Apple TV hardware, smart TVs, streaming devices, and tv.apple.com do not provide this download function; use a supported iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC.
Netflix
- Install or update Netflix and sign in.
- Open the movie’s detail page.
- Tap Download when the icon appears.
- Play it from My Netflix > Downloads (the exact tab can vary by app version).
The latest Netflix app currently requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later; older previously downloaded app versions may work on iOS 12 or later (Netflix device guidance). No icon usually means the title is not licensed for downloads in your market or under your plan. Netflix cites rights agreements, popularity, cost, seasonal factors, and local availability (Netflix title availability).

Allow cellular downloads
In Netflix, open My Netflix > profile name > App Settings > Downloads, then turn off Wi‑Fi Only (Netflix mobile-data instructions). Cellular downloads can use substantial data.
Netflix downloads can expire, require renewal, or become unavailable when rights end. Reinstalling or resetting the app removes saved downloads. Netflix also describes a current limit of 15 total downloads per device per calendar month on ad-supported plans; this plan rule can change (Netflix download limit; expired titles).
Prime Video
- Install or update the Prime Video app and sign in.
- Open the movie’s detail page.
- Tap the download control and wait for completion.
- Open the app’s downloads area to watch offline.
For series, download a whole season or individual episodes from the episode list. Eligibility differs by title, country, subscription entitlement, and whether the item is rented or purchased. Prime Video states that downloaded content cannot be played over Chromecast or AirPlay, so do not assume an iPhone download can be cast later (Prime Video Help).

YouTube Movies & TV
- Buy or rent the movie with your Google Account.
- Open YouTube on the iPhone and sign in to that same account.
- Tap your profile picture, then Your movies & TV.
- Select the movie and tap Download.
- Choose an available quality and audio track, if offered.
- Find it under your profile picture’s Downloads area.
YouTube Premium is not required for purchased movie downloads. Purchased movies can be downloaded on up to five devices; a rental can be downloaded on one device at a time. UHD is not available for download. Rental timing is controlled at checkout; YouTube commonly uses 30 days to start and 48 hours after playback begins (YouTube Help).
Watching and deleting downloads
Start playback from the same app’s Downloads or Library section with Wi‑Fi and cellular data disabled. The app may still check your account periodically, and rental or subscription deadlines continue while you are offline.
Delete a viewed item from the provider’s Downloads or storage-management screen to reclaim space. Deleting an Apple TV purchase from the iPhone removes only the local copy; the purchase remains in your Apple account and can be downloaded again (Apple library management).

When there is no Download button
- The title is stream-only or its local rights are unavailable.
- Your plan, rental status, country, or third-party channel does not permit downloads.
- You are signed in to the wrong account.
- The app or iOS version is outdated.
- You reached a device or download limit.
- Insufficient storage prevents the control from appearing or the job from starting.
Licensing is the most common explanation for a missing Netflix control, but the same principle applies across services.

Netflix specifically warns that reinstalling its app deletes downloads and recommends updating the app and iOS before reinstalling (Netflix troubleshooting).
Personal video files
If you legally own a compatible, DRM-free video file, you can transfer it through Apple-supported file sharing or open it in a reputable media-player app. That is different from extracting a movie from Netflix, Apple TV, Prime Video, or YouTube: those downloads remain protected inside the provider’s app. Avoid downloader websites, DRM-removal tools, torrents, and screen-recording workarounds.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download a movie directly from Safari?
Only when the website provides an authorized download that produces a compatible file. Streaming a film in Safari does not normally save an offline copy; use the service’s official iPhone app instead.
Can I download Netflix movies into Photos or Files?
No. Netflix downloads are managed inside the Netflix app and are not ordinary video files exposed to Photos or Files.
Do I need Wi‑Fi?
No, if the app permits cellular downloads. Wi‑Fi is the safer default because movie downloads can consume substantial mobile data.
Will a subscription download remain after I cancel?
Usually not. Subscription downloads depend on the active entitlement, title rights, app authorization, and any expiration rules.
Can I move a downloaded movie to another iPhone?
Provider downloads generally cannot be copied as files. Sign in to the same account on a supported device and download again, subject to that service’s device limits.
