To create a recognizable Pennywise look at home, start with a pale face base, darkened eyes, red lines that rise from the mouth toward the brows, and a deliberately enlarged smile. A bald cap, wig, or prosthetics can add complexity, but they are optional; the painted-face version is the practical starting point for Halloween or cosplay.
Choose a painted look or a fuller transformation
A painted-face tutorial is not the same as the professional film makeup. For It Chapter Two, makeup artist and prosthetics designer Sean Sansom described five prosthetic pieces applied from the back of the head forward, followed by makeup, hair, teeth, and contact lenses. He said, “The makeup consisted of 5 prosthetic pieces which myself and Shane Zander would apply in sequence, working our way from back to front.” The film process is useful context, not a home application recipe: its appliances and specialist work add substantial complexity.
For a simpler costume, focus on the signature shapes rather than trying to reproduce every film detail. Mehron’s Jordan Hanz tutorial demonstrates one artist’s theatrical interpretation, using a bald cap, white makeup, shaded eyes, a painted mouth and nose, and finishing details. The recognizable features are the pale base, upward-running red lines, emphasized eyes, and broad smile.
Gather materials for the painted-face version
Core supplies
- White clown makeup or theatrical face paint for the base.
- Red and black face paint for the mouth, nose, and eye details.
- Grey or brown makeup for shading.
- Setting powder to help set the white base.
- Makeup brushes or applicators suited to broad coverage and fine lines.
These are functional categories, not a required brand list. In her tutorial, Hanz names Mehron Latex Bald Cap, Spirit Gum, Clown White, Ultra Fine Setting Powder, Earth iNtense Pro pressed pigment powder, and Paradise Makeup AQ in white, yellow, red, and black. Product availability, formulations, and suitability can change, so check current labels and follow the manufacturer’s directions before use.

Optional additions
- A bald cap and spirit gum for changing the hairline and covering the scalp.
- A wig, ruff, or costume pieces to extend the look beyond the face.
- Mascara or false lashes for a more theatrical eye.
- Contact lenses only if desired and suitable for you; they are not needed to make the makeup recognizable.
Hanz’s list reflects her method, not a requirement for every version. Artist Jason Kerr’s glam interpretation, covered by Teen Vogue, uses conventional beauty products including Dipbrow, an eyeshadow palette, black pigment, and red-toned liquid lip colors. Those are that artist’s choices, not mandatory or film-authoritative supplies.
How to do Pennywise makeup with paint
1. Prepare and map the design
Start with clean, dry skin and keep paint away from the eyes and lips unless its label specifically permits use there. If using any product for the first time, follow its directions and check for an appropriate skin-sensitivity test. Before applying color, decide how large you want the smile and where the red lines will end. Hanz maps the mouth before applying the white base, which helps keep the design balanced.

2. Apply and set the pale base
Apply white clown makeup over the face in an even layer, working around the eye area carefully. Hanz extends her white base over the head, neck, and chest for a fuller transformation; for a quick costume, face coverage alone is enough. Set the base with setting powder according to the product instructions so later colors have a more stable surface.
3. Add depth around the eyes
Use grey and brown shading to create dimension, then build the darker, distressed effect around the eyes with red and black. Keep the shapes intentional: the eye treatment should support the red lines and enlarged mouth rather than compete with them. Hanz uses pressed pigments and theatrical makeup for this stage, but the precise colors and placement are one artist’s interpretation.

4. Paint the enlarged mouth and red lines
Outline a broad smile, then fill and define it to create the impression of Pennywise’s exaggerated mouth. Paint red lines that extend upward from the mouth toward the brows; the upward direction is central to the look. Hanz adds painted teeth and uses black and red detailing to distress and shade the mouth. If you are simplifying the design, retain the red extensions and clear smile shape rather than adding every detail.
5. Finish the nose and highlights
Paint the nose red and add shading and highlights to separate it from the white base. Hanz also shades the chest ruffle when completing a larger costume look. Add a wig or other accessories only after the face paint is complete, taking care not to smear the design.

What the film version adds
Sansom said the sequel’s team used a skull piece, a scene-dependent brow, cheek appliances, and a nose tip, then added white makeup, brown and grey shading, airbrushed and hand-painted red lines, lip and nose detail, eye makeup, a wig, teeth, and contact lenses. He reported that the sequel process was streamlined by about 30 minutes; that figure refers to the professional film application, not a home tutorial or a general makeup time estimate.
The character’s resemblance also comes from performance. Bill Skarsgård has described bringing his own lip movement and lazy eye into the role, so matching paint placement alone cannot reproduce the on-screen effect.

- Simple painted face: white base, eye shading, red mouth lines, and a red nose. This uses fewer supplies and avoids prosthetic application.
- More complete head transformation: add a bald cap and spirit gum, as in Hanz’s tutorial. This adds application steps and requires following the adhesive and cap instructions.
- Glam interpretation: adapt conventional makeup products to the red, white, and dark shapes, as in Jason Kerr’s version. It is a stylistic alternative rather than a replica of the film makeup.
- Film-style prosthetic transformation: the sequel process involved multiple appliances, hair, teeth, and contacts. The sources do not establish consumer costs or a reliable home application time for this route.
There are no established home-tutorial success figures, independently timed home applications, or comparative product tests in the cited tutorials. Choose products based on their intended use and your comfort applying them, rather than assuming one brand or route is proven superior.
