In YouTube Studio, open Content and check the video’s Restrictions column. Claims means a Content ID claim; Copyright—Takedown means a copyright removal request. The labels lead to different processes: a claim can affect a video without giving your channel a strike, while a valid removal request removes the video and applies a strike.
Find the notice in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Find the video and inspect Restrictions. The label Claims identifies a Content ID claim. Copyright—Takedown identifies a copyright removal request, also called a takedown.
- Open the notice details before acting. For a claim, review the claimant, matched segment, and policy. For a takedown, read whether it is scheduled and note the stated deadline.
Do not treat the words “copyright” or “claim” in a notification’s subject line as enough to classify it; use the video’s Restrictions label and notice details in Studio.
What the two notices mean
| Question | Content ID claim | Copyright removal request |
|---|---|---|
| What triggers it? | YouTube’s matching system finds a match between a video or segment and reference material supplied by a rights holder. | A rights holder submits a legal request alleging infringement and asking YouTube to remove content. |
| What may happen? | The rights holder’s policy may block, monetize, or track the video. Effects can vary by country. A tracked or monetized video generally remains viewable while the claim is active. | YouTube reviews the request. If it is valid, the video is removed and the channel receives a copyright strike. |
| Does it automatically give the channel a strike? | No. A Content ID claim alone does not create a copyright strike. | A valid removal request results in a strike when it takes effect. |
| Where does the creator respond? | In the claim details, using options available for that claim, such as leaving it, editing claimed material, or disputing it with a valid basis. | In the removal-request notice, by reviewing the deadline and available steps. After a strike, YouTube lists separate resolution routes. |
What to do about a Content ID claim
Decide whether you need to act
If you accept the claim and its effect, you can leave it in place. A claim may affect a video’s availability or monetization without affecting the channel with a strike. Check the policy and any geographic limits shown in the notice rather than assuming the same outcome applies everywhere.
Edit material you do not have rights to use
If the claim is valid and you want it cleared, Studio may offer options to trim the claimed segment, replace claimed music with audio from the YouTube Audio Library, or mute the claimed audio. If all claimed material is successfully removed, the claim is cleared.

Before saving an edit in Studio Editor, preserve a copy if you may need the original. YouTube’s guidance, as of June 2025, says saved Studio Editor changes cannot be undone through Revert to original. It suggests downloading the video or using Google Takeout before editing.
Dispute only when you have a grounded reason
A dispute may be appropriate if you own or have the necessary rights, believe a copyright exception applies, or think the match is an error. A credit line, owning a copy of the work, or choosing not to monetize does not by itself justify a dispute.

The claimant has 30 days to respond to an initial dispute. YouTube does not decide who owns a work or determine whether a particular use qualifies as fair use or fair dealing, and it does not mediate copyright disputes. If the facts or consequences are significant and you are uncertain, understand your rights and consider seeking legal advice before disputing.
Appeals and blocked claims
If an initial dispute is rejected, an eligible creator may be able to appeal. For eligible blocked claims, Studio may offer Escalate to Appeal, which skips the initial dispute stage. The claimant has seven days to respond to an appeal.

Escalation may shorten the platform response stage, but it also moves more quickly toward a formal removal request if the claimant rejects the appeal. If that removal request is valid, a strike follows. Choose this route based on your actual rights and evidence, not simply to get a faster answer.
What to do about a copyright removal request
Check whether removal is scheduled
Read the notice for a scheduled removal and its deadline. A scheduled request can provide a seven-day window before removal and a strike. YouTube identifies actions such as deleting the video before the window closes or seeking a retraction. If the request followed a rejected Content ID appeal, canceling the appeal within the window can avoid the strike while leaving the Content ID claim active.

If the request takes effect, the video is removed and the strike is applied. A takedown is not simply a stronger-looking Content ID claim; it is a separate removal process.
Understand the options after a strike
YouTube lists three routes for addressing a strike: complete Copyright School and wait 90 days, obtain a retraction, or submit a counter notification if you believe the removal was mistaken or a copyright exception applies. A counter notification is a legal request; it is available only after the removal takes effect and the strike is applied. Do not file one casually or treat it as an ordinary claim dispute.

Common classification mistakes
- Assuming every copyright notice is a strike: check Restrictions. A claim alone does not create a strike.
- Assuming a claim means the video is removed: claim policies can block, monetize, or track, and blocking may be limited by geography.
- Disputing because you credited the creator or bought a copy: those facts alone do not establish permission to upload or justify a dispute.
- Appealing just to move faster: an appeal can bring the matter closer to a formal removal request if rejected.
- Editing without saving an original: preserve a copy before saving Studio Editor changes that may not be reversible.
- Treating a counter notification like a routine support form: it is a legal request and follows a removal and strike.
