Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo show the song title and artist playing on a YouTube radio stream in OBS, use Tuna with a playback source it supports. Set Tuna to write formatted metadata to a file, then add that file as an OBS text source. For cover art, point an OBS image source to the artwork file Tuna saves. Tuna reads metadata exposed by a player or integration; it does not identify arbitrary audio by listening to it.
The right setup depends on where your music plays. YouTube Music has a documented browser-source route; VLC has its own source integration and limitations. An ordinary YouTube video playing in a browser is not the same as YouTube Music, and Tuna does not automatically read the metadata of your live broadcast.
Choose the playback source before configuring Tuna
Tuna can retrieve song information from documented playback sources, but the available fields depend on the source and its metadata. Its upstream project lists integrations including Spotify, MPD, VLC, YouTube Music, MPRIS, Windows Media Control, window title, Last.fm and Icecast; it also lists browser-player integrations such as SoundCloud, Spotify Web Player, Deezer, Yandex Music and Pretzel.rocks through a Tampermonkey script. These are supported paths, not a guarantee that every source supplies title, artist and artwork in every setup. See the Tuna project and its OBS resource documentation for current instructions.
- YouTube Music: The documented method uses Tuna’s web-browser source and local information server. Follow the YouTube Music-specific steps below.
- VLC: Select VLC in Tuna and choose the VLC source in the active OBS scene. The documented integration requires VLC 3.0.0 or later and does not support a VLC source nested in a group.
- Other supported players: Choose the matching Tuna source and confirm which metadata fields that integration provides. Browser scripts or platform-specific media controls may involve additional setup.
If your radio playlist is mixed from several sources, decide which player should be authoritative. A now-playing display can only reliably reflect the source and metadata Tuna is configured to read; it is not a general audio-recognition system.

Install Tuna and check OBS compatibility
The OBS resource page lists OBS Studio 28.0.0 as Tuna’s minimum version and lists Windows and Linux. This is the resource’s stated requirement, not a guarantee for every current OBS build or packaging format. Check the project’s release and installation links for compatibility before installing, since the plugin has received updates over time.
- Windows: The resource describes running the installer or extracting the plugin’s
dataandobs-pluginsfolders into the OBS installation directory. After a successful load, Tuna should appear under OBS Tools. - Linux: The resource describes an installer for Debian-based distributions and source-building or manual extraction for other setups. Manual extraction may not work on every distribution.
- Flatpak OBS: The resource notes reports that Tuna may not load with Flatpak OBS and limits support for that packaging. If you use Flatpak, verify compatibility rather than assuming a standard installation method will work.
The resource’s update history includes a September 12, 2025 entry addressing a crash with a beta that removed a deprecated API function. That shows compatibility can change; it does not establish which release is newest today. See the Tuna update history alongside the current installation information.

Set up the basic song-title and artist text
- Open Tuna’s settings in OBS. After installing the plugin, open Tools and select Tuna. In its settings, choose the playback source that matches the player you use.
- Set a metadata output file. In Tuna’s output settings, specify where it should write the formatted information. Choose a location OBS can read, and keep the path consistent when you configure the text source.
- Choose the fields and format. For a title-and-artist line, the documented format is
{artists} - {title}. Tuna’s resource documentation explains the output formatting options; not every source supports every field or placeholder. - Add an OBS text source. In the scene where the radio stream appears, add a text source and enable its option to read text from a file. Browse to the output file you configured in Tuna.
- Test with a track that has metadata. Start playback and confirm that the text source updates. If the artist is blank or the title is incomplete, check the source’s metadata before changing OBS styling or layout.
This file-based approach is the simplest documented route: Tuna writes the information, and an OBS text source displays it. You can style and position that source like other text in the scene.
Use Tuna with YouTube Music
For YouTube Music, the Tuna OBS resource documents a route through the web-browser source. It is distinct from simply playing an ordinary YouTube video in a browser: the described setup is specifically for YouTube Music and depends on Tuna’s integration.

- In Tuna’s source settings, select Web browser as the music source.
- Enable Tuna’s local webserver option so the integration can provide information locally.
- Enable the Tuna plugin in the YouTube Music application as described in Tuna’s current instructions.
- Use the basic text-file workflow to display the output in an OBS text source, then verify that the title and artist change when the track changes.
Exact behavior can depend on the current application and selected Tuna source. Do not assume Tuna queries the YouTube live stream itself or automatically discovers what viewers hear.
Use VLC playback, including local audio files
Tuna’s documented VLC setup requires VLC 3.0.0 or later. In Tuna, select VLC as the source, refresh or select the relevant scene and VLC source, and add it for monitoring. The described setup does not work with a VLC source that is grouped or otherwise nested, so use a directly selectable source if metadata is not appearing.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For local files, VLC may supply the filename as the title. If the resulting label includes extensions such as .mp3, .wav or .flac, Tuna’s option to remove extensions may help. A filename is not necessarily the same as embedded track metadata, so check the file’s tags and the fields VLC exposes if the displayed title or artist is wrong.
Add cover art with an OBS image source
Tuna can save cover art as a file for an OBS image source. Configure the artwork output in Tuna, then add an image source in the appropriate scene and point it to that file. Test with a track known to have artwork. If the image is absent or does not change, the selected playback source may not supply artwork, or its integration may not expose it; a missing image does not by itself indicate an OBS rendering problem.

When a styled browser overlay is worth the extra setup
If a plain text line and artwork are not enough, the community project NowPlayingRevamped-universal documents a browser overlay with artist and title, album art, a progress bar, animations and customization. It is a community project, not an official Tuna distribution. Its documented setup requires OBS, Tuna, Windows Media Control, Windows and a local web server.
The project’s example configures Tuna to save title, first artist and cover-art files, enables Tuna’s webserver on port 1608, serves the overlay files locally, then adds the resulting URL as an OBS Browser Source. The README’s example uses a 500 by 150 browser source and says to refresh it when its scene becomes active. Treat those details as that project’s example, not requirements for Tuna’s basic text workflow; consult its current README for setup and compatibility before using it.
There is a source-selection edge case: the overlay README reports that if multiple browser sources play simultaneously, Windows Media Control may show whichever source became active most recently and may not return to the earlier one until a track-change event. If you see stale or unexpected track information, reduce competing active sources or verify which player Windows Media Control currently reports.
Pick the display path that fits your setup
| Option | Best fit | What it displays | Requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuna output file with OBS text and image sources | A straightforward title-and-artist label, with optional cover art | Fields exposed by the chosen Tuna playback source | Requires a supported source and available metadata; format support varies by source. |
| Tuna browser-player integration or userscript | Music played in a supported browser service | Information exposed by that integration | Some paths use a Tampermonkey script or local-server settings; confirm current project instructions and source support. |
| NowPlayingRevamped-universal community overlay | A more designed widget with artwork, progress and animation | Artist, title, cover art and visual elements described by the project | Documented setup uses Windows Media Control, Windows and a local web server; simultaneous sources can confuse selection. |
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect now-playing information
- Tuna is missing from OBS Tools: The plugin may not have installed correctly or OBS may not have loaded it. Check the OBS log for loading errors and confirm that the installation matches your OBS packaging and operating system.
- The title appears but artist or artwork is blank: Check whether the playback source supplies that field or image. Tuna warns that not every source supports all formatting options.
- The text never changes: Confirm that Tuna is monitoring the actual player or VLC source, the output path matches the OBS text source’s file path, and the player is exposing track changes.
- VLC information is absent: Confirm VLC is version 3.0.0 or later, and make sure the VLC source is not nested in a group in the documented setup.
- The title contains a file extension: For VLC local files, try Tuna’s remove-extensions option; also check whether VLC is using the filename rather than embedded track tags.
- A browser overlay shows the wrong player: With the community widget, simultaneous media sources can affect Windows Media Control’s active-source selection. Check which source became active most recently and whether a track-change event has occurred.
- Spotify login or updates fail: Tuna’s guide mentions checking the plugin version, service/API availability or rate limits, and login cookies. Authentication behavior can change, so use current Tuna instructions rather than relying on an older login procedure.
