Use YouTube’s built-in membership signals for badges, new-member messages and member chat, then add a concise on-screen panel if you want the benefits to remain visible in the video. The panel should describe only perks your channel actually offers and point viewers to the channel’s Join or See perks area.
What viewers can see natively on YouTube
YouTube memberships can include channel badges, members-only posts, custom emoji, early access to videos, members-only live chat or livestreams, milestone chats, a member recognition shelf, Shorts and videos, and a new-member chat message. Which benefits appear depends on what the creator enables and offers; viewers can check the channel’s Join or See perks area for the actual offer. Membership levels may have different benefits, and higher levels inherit perks from lower levels.
- Loyalty badges: A member’s badge appears beside their name in comments and live chat. Badges can indicate membership tenure.
- New-member message: When someone joins during a livestream, YouTube displays a bright green New Member message. The member’s profile picture is pinned at the top of chat for five minutes.
- Members-only chat: A creator can leave a livestream public while limiting who can post in chat to members. This restricts chat participation, not viewing.
- Milestone chats: Eligible members can send a highlighted message once per month from their second consecutive membership month. The message is visible to everyone watching chat.
- Custom emoji: Members can use creator-uploaded emoji in live chat. These are not present automatically; the creator must upload them.
Configure the benefits before promoting them
YouTube allows creators to configure up to six membership levels, with one to five perks per level. Perks stack: higher-priced levels include the benefits of lower levels. YouTube reviews proposed levels and perks against its policies before they go live; its Help page says review takes about a day. See YouTube’s instructions for creating or managing membership levels and perks.
Before adding claims to a persistent graphic, check each level in YouTube Studio and confirm the relevant features are active. Don’t imply that every channel offers every possible YouTube membership benefit, or that all members receive the same perks if your levels differ.

Add a persistent benefits panel to the stream
A graphic composed into the stream video can explain the offer to viewers who do not inspect chat or channel menus. YouTube and OBS do not prescribe its wording, placement or rotation; treat the design below as a practical recommendation, not a platform requirement.
- Write a short heading. Name the membership offer plainly, such as “Channel membership benefits.”
- Choose one or two real perks. Use concrete benefits that are active for the level you are promoting—for example, custom emoji or a members-only stream. Avoid listing an enabled-looking feature that your channel does not actually provide.
- Give viewers a next step. Direct them to the channel’s Join or See perks area, where they can review the current benefits and levels.
- Compose the panel in your production. In OBS Studio, add the graphic as a scene element, or use a Browser Source for a web-based overlay. OBS says it does not supply alerts itself; a third-party alert overlay can be embedded through a Browser Source. This is a production option, not an endorsement of any alert vendor.
- Check readability in the finished scene. Preview the panel at the stream’s intended resolution and make sure it does not obscure essential documentary footage, subtitles, or other important information. Keep the wording brief enough to read at a glance.
Example copy: “Members get chat badges, custom emoji, and [your active channel-specific perk] — see Join → Perks.” This is an editorial example, not official YouTube wording. Replace the bracketed text with a real benefit or remove it.

Native signals and an on-screen panel do different jobs
| Approach | Where it appears | Best use | Setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native YouTube membership features | Live chat, membership area and other channel surfaces | Show member status and provide participation benefits | Configure the available membership levels and features in YouTube Studio |
| Persistent stream overlay | Within the composed video | Explain the offer to viewers who may not open chat or channel menus | Add an encoder scene element or web overlay; confirm the chosen encoder supports the required source |
For a public livestream with members-only chat, YouTube’s rule is explicit: “Everyone can still view the live stream, but only members can post chats.” See YouTube’s membership guidance.
Plan separately for a 24/7 stream and its archive
A continuous viewing experience does not guarantee a single complete archive. YouTube’s encoder documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be saved in full as one video. If you need a complete recording, plan the broadcast and archive approach around that limitation rather than assuming the full day will be preserved. See YouTube’s encoder streaming setup guidance.

YouTube describes encoders as software applications or standalone hardware for advanced production, including overlays and external audio or video equipment. A dedicated hardware encoder is not inherently necessary just to show membership benefits: OBS offers a software-based Browser Source path for web overlays.
