Amazon CloudFront can deliver a 24/7 live channel, but it does not turn raw video into a stream. You need an encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaLive to prepare the video, an origin or packager such as AWS Elemental MediaPackage or MediaStore, then a CloudFront distribution and a compatible player. For a YouTube channel that simply needs to loop uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a simpler cloud alternative; it does not use CloudFront.
What CloudFront does in a 24/7 streaming system
CloudFront is the content delivery network (CDN) in the workflow: it distributes prepared media to viewers. It is not an encoder, and it does not ingest raw footage and make it ready to play. An encoder produces viewer-ready outputs; a packager or origin makes the media and playback information available; CloudFront delivers those assets to players.
In formats such as HLS and DASH, video is divided into media segments. A manifest tells the player which segments to request and in what order. Other formats named in AWS documentation include Smooth Streaming and CMAF. The complete path is therefore:
Source feed → AWS Elemental MediaLive → MediaPackage or MediaStore → CloudFront → player

AWS also documents an HLS-focused reference architecture that uses S3 as the origin. These are different designs, not interchangeable CloudFront settings: the origin, output formats, manifest paths, and cache behavior must match the workflow you choose.
Choose an origin and packaging pattern
| Pattern | Choose it when | Important checks |
|---|---|---|
| MediaLive → MediaPackage → CloudFront | You need MediaPackage to package output for multiple device formats or need additional packaging features such as DRM. | Use the relevant MediaPackage endpoint as the CloudFront origin; route the actual manifest and segment paths; configure origin authorization. If using LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, forward the required query strings on manifest requests. |
| MediaLive → MediaStore → CloudFront | MediaLive already produces the formats your viewers need and you want MediaStore as the origin. | Grant CloudFront access, set the MediaStore data endpoint and origin path, and choose cache behavior suited to your segment durations. |
| MediaLive → S3 → CloudFront reference solution | You want to evaluate AWS’s documented HLS-oriented sample architecture and CloudFormation deployment. | The reference solution produces ABR HLS and lists four source input types. It is described for a live event, so assess its defaults and operational design before treating it as a continuous-channel failover solution. |
Compare these patterns against the playback formats and devices you need, whether packaging or DRM is required, origin behavior and cacheability, latency target, authorization, redundancy, AWS Region availability, operational workload, and expected traffic. The documented patterns do not establish one universally fastest or best option.

Build the MediaPackage and CloudFront workflow
The following is an implementation sequence for the MediaLive-to-MediaPackage pattern. Exact paths and behavior settings depend on the endpoints and formats you create; use the patterns for your actual output rather than copying an HLS configuration onto DASH or CMAF.
- Prepare the source and encoder. Provide the upstream source input and create an AWS Elemental MediaLive channel. Configure output profiles appropriate to the viewers and start the channel. MediaLive ingests the upstream content, transcodes it, and sends output downstream.
- Create the packaging endpoints. Create a MediaPackage channel and endpoints for the formats your playback devices require. MediaPackage can package ABR output as HLS, DASH, and CMAF.
- Add the MediaPackage origin to CloudFront. Use the endpoint’s correct origin domain and path. AWS specifies HTTPS for a MediaPackage origin entered from another account. If you use a wildcard path, make sure it routes somewhere; AWS describes using a dummy origin for unmatched paths so they are not sent to a real origin incorrectly.
- Create endpoint-specific cache behaviors. Route manifest and segment requests to the right endpoint. For example, AWS’s HLS examples distinguish
.m3u8manifests from.tssegments; CMAF and DASH examples use their relevant manifest types and.mp4segments. Treat these as format-specific examples, not universal extensions. - Set viewer protocol and caching policies. Use HTTPS for viewer delivery; AWS’s MediaStore setup calls for redirecting viewer HTTP requests to HTTPS. Create cache policies appropriate to the endpoint’s manifest and segment behavior. For MediaStore, AWS says to choose a policy that fits caching needs and segment durations.
- Handle LL-HLS manifest requests if applicable. When using LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, forward the
_HLS_msnand_HLS_partquery strings on manifest requests. Omitting them can prevent those requests from carrying the information the workflow expects. - Authorize CloudFront at the origin. Enable MediaPackage header-based CDN authorization so requests are authorized between MediaPackage and CloudFront. Protect the authorization secret. AWS’s reference architecture stores its generated CDN identifier in AWS Secrets Manager.
- Validate the complete viewer path. Test with the player and devices you intend to support, observe origin and CDN behavior, and exercise failover before relying on the channel. This is an operational recommendation based on the components in the workflow, not a claim that any particular deployment has been tested here.
Plan for continuous operation and failure isolation
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS architecture supports primary and secondary live streams through MediaLive and MediaPackage. That is an architectural option, not a guarantee that every component in a specific deployment will fail over as intended; test the full path and recovery behavior you configure.

When playback fails, isolate the fault by stage instead of treating every interruption as a CloudFront problem:
- Source contribution: confirm the upstream source is present and stable.
- MediaLive ingest or channel: check whether the channel is ingesting and producing downstream output.
- Packaging or origin: verify the expected manifests and segments are available at the selected endpoint.
- CloudFront: inspect whether the request path matches a behavior and whether the origin and authorization settings are correct.
- Player: check that the device supports the selected output format and can load its manifest and segments.
MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect are available only in specific AWS Regions. If MediaConnect flows are used as input, the reference solution calls for deploying in the same Region as those flows. Confirm current Region availability and service quotas during planning because they can change.

Common configuration problems and fixes
- CloudFront returns errors for manifests or segments: check that the requested path matches a behavior, the behavior points to the correct origin and endpoint path, and the origin can authorize the request.
- Manifests load but playback stalls: check that the segment behavior matches the output format and that the referenced segment files are available from the origin. A manifest and its segments may require distinct routing.
- LL-HLS blocking playlist requests do not work as expected: check that manifest requests forward
_HLS_msnand_HLS_part. - Some devices cannot play the stream: verify that the endpoint provides a format suitable for those devices and that the CloudFront behaviors match that format’s manifest and segment paths.
- Requests reach an unintended origin: review wildcard path behavior. Configure unmatched paths deliberately rather than allowing them to route to a production origin by accident.
- HTTP and HTTPS behave differently: confirm the viewer protocol policy and use HTTPS for the delivery path.
- A failover design has not been proven: test the primary and secondary paths under the conditions you expect to encounter; the presence of a secondary stream alone does not establish that every failure will recover correctly.
Estimate costs for the actual channel
AWS’s deployment-planning guide provides examples for specific event scenarios, not a general 24/7 streaming rate. Its estimates depend on event duration, viewer count, bitrate, encoding profile, Region, cache behavior, and service pricing. One example assumes US-East-1 standard pricing, uses the highest bitrate for its upper range, and in one scenario assumes a 99% cache/hit ratio between CloudFront and MediaPackage. That 99% figure is an assumption for that guide scenario, not a promised or typical result for your channel.
The guide also notes that QVBR and variable video complexity may reduce bandwidth and the estimate. Since a continuous channel runs far longer than an event, do not annualize an event example without validating its assumptions. Estimate the workload with current AWS pricing, the intended output profile and bitrate, expected viewing traffic, and realistic cache assumptions.
