Set your live output to a landscape 16:9 canvas, then crop and reposition the portrait video until the important action stays in frame. Don’t stretch the portrait footage to fill the width: that distorts the image. If cropping would remove important details, keep the full portrait frame and use the empty landscape space as part of the design.
Choose how the portrait video should fit
A portrait clip and a landscape canvas have different shapes, so there are two practical ways to compose the frame:
- Crop to fill: Enlarge the portrait image until it fills the landscape canvas. This uses the whole frame, but cuts off parts of the original image.
- Preserve the full frame: Fit the entire portrait clip inside the landscape canvas and use the remaining space for a background, images, overlays, or other scene content. A blurred duplicate of the clip is one possible background treatment, not a required feature.
Use a crop when the subject and essential details fit comfortably in the visible area. Preserve the full frame when cropping would cut off faces, captions, action, or other content that matters.
Crop and frame the clip for a landscape loop
- Set a landscape canvas. Choose the output aspect ratio and resolution in your editing or scene software before arranging the clip. OBS gives 16:9 resolutions such as 1920×1080 and 1280×720 as examples; neither resolution is mandatory for every streaming setup. Choose a resolution and frame rate suitable for your workflow.
- Add the portrait clip. Place it on the canvas and enlarge it to fill the frame if you want a crop-to-fill composition. Scale proportionally so the image keeps its original shape.
- Reposition the crop. Move the image within the canvas so faces, action, captions, or other essential details remain visible. A centered crop is a useful starting point when the subject is centered; adjust the position if it is not.
- Preview the entire loop. Check the framing through movements and cuts, not just at the opening frame. If a fixed crop loses a moving subject or important details, adjust the composition or use a background treatment that preserves more of the portrait frame.
- Prepare and check the landscape output. Preview the finished composition in your editing or scene software before sending it to YouTube. A prerecorded loop needs its landscape composition prepared; YouTube’s live layout controls described below are for configuring a live layout, not a universal way to edit every prerecorded clip.
Use YouTube’s layout controls only for the live layout they’re designed for
YouTube describes horizontal live streams as 16:9 and vertical live streams as 9:16. In Live Control Room, the vertical stream is by default a center crop of the horizontal stream. YouTube’s vertical layout editor offers Center crop, Fit to phone width, and Stacked, with controls to adjust zoom and position. These settings configure YouTube’s live vertical layout; they are not general editing instructions for a prerecorded portrait clip that you want to compose as landscape. If you need horizontal and vertical live feeds at once
YouTube documents a separate encoder-based dual-stream workflow using RTMP(S). Select an encoder in the vertical preview and use a second stream key for the vertical stream; make sure each key receives the matching format. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started, so configure both formats before going live. This dual-stream setup is different from making one landscape loop out of a prerecorded portrait clip. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance for its current workflow.
Common framing problems and fixes
- The image looks stretched: The portrait source has likely been forced across the landscape frame. Scale it proportionally, then crop by enlarging and repositioning it, or preserve the full frame with a designed background.
- The subject is cut off: A center crop may not suit the shot. Reposition the clip, reduce the crop, or use a layout that retains more of the portrait image.
- The opening looks right but later footage does not: The subject may move, or cuts may change the composition. Review the whole loop and choose framing that works across its shots; a single fixed crop may not suit every moment.
- The full portrait image leaves unused space: That is expected when preserving the original frame on a landscape canvas. Fill the space with scene content or a background rather than distorting the source.
- The vertical format is missing from a dual stream: Check that you set up the vertical preview and its separate stream key before starting. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added once the stream has started.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube loop made from uploaded footage, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos while your computer is off. The landscape crop still needs to be composed in your editing or scene software before upload.
