How to Create and Grow a Podcast on YouTube

A YouTube podcast is a playlist of video episodes. Here’s how to set it up in Studio, choose an episode order, distribute episodes, and track performance.

On YouTube, a podcast is a playlist of video episodes—not an audio file or a separate podcast feed by itself. In YouTube Studio, create a podcast or designate an existing playlist, add full-length episode videos, and arrange them in the order that fits your show. You can upload videos directly or distribute episodes through an RSS feed or a supported hosting platform.

What counts as a podcast on YouTube?

YouTube defines a podcast show as a playlist and its episodes as videos in that playlist. An MP3 file alone cannot serve as a YouTube podcast episode: each episode needs to be delivered as a video. If your show is audio-only, you will need to pair the audio with video content before uploading or distributing it to YouTube.

YouTube podcast features and YouTube Music inclusion are conditional, not automatic. Eligibility can be affected by factors such as whether you own the content and whether it complies with copyright policies.

Set up the podcast in YouTube Studio

  1. Create or designate the podcast. In YouTube Studio, create a new podcast or designate an existing playlist as a podcast. Enter the show title and description, choose visibility, and add the podcast thumbnail. Current interface labels can change; follow the podcast creation or playlist designation controls in Studio.
  2. Use the show’s actual name. Choose the descriptive name listeners know, rather than a generic title. YouTube cautions against adding extra words, including “podcast” when it is not part of the show’s name. Write a detailed description that explains the subject and gives prospective listeners a clear sense of the show.
  3. Add a square thumbnail. YouTube requires a square podcast thumbnail to edit podcast details and recommends 1280 x 1280 pixels. This is a design specification, not evidence that a particular thumbnail will improve reach.
  4. Add full episodes. Upload episode videos or add existing videos to the podcast playlist. Keep it focused on full-length episodes from that show; do not mix in clips, unrelated uploads, or videos from other channels.
  5. Set the episode order. For an episodic show—where listeners can start with most installments—YouTube says to order episodes newest to oldest. For a serial show with a continuing narrative, order them oldest to newest.

Choose how to deliver episodes

You can upload videos directly in YouTube Studio, connect an RSS feed, or check whether your podcast hosting platform supports YouTube distribution. YouTube also mentions third-party upload tools. These are different delivery routes to the same basic outcome: podcast episodes appear on YouTube as videos in a podcast playlist.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Direct Studio upload: Use this when you already have episode videos and want to manage uploads in YouTube.
  • RSS or host distribution: Consider this if your show already publishes through an RSS feed or a hosting service. Confirm the host supports YouTube distribution and review its instructions before connecting the feed.
  • Audio-only source: An MP3 alone is not a YouTube episode. Prepare video for each episode before using a video-based delivery route.

Keep full episodes, clips, and Shorts organized

Make one public podcast playlist for each show, with complete episodes from all seasons in the intended listening order. Keep clips and Shorts in separate playlists; do not designate a clips playlist as a podcast. YouTube says Shorts made to support a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music, so they should not replace the full episodes in the main podcast playlist.

YouTube says eligible podcasts may receive YouTube Music inclusion, podcast badges, placement on youtube.com/podcasts, Watch-page discovery, recommendations to viewers with similar interests, and improved search features. These are potential discovery surfaces, not guaranteed outcomes. YouTube describes youtube.com/podcasts as using social signals, machine learning, signals from other Google products and services, and human input.

Improve discoverability without assuming a growth guarantee

YouTube’s guidance emphasizes sound organization and clear identification: make a public podcast for each show, keep complete episodes in consumption order, use the show’s name consistently, and write a detailed description. These steps make the show easier for people and platform features to understand, but YouTube does not promise that any one tactic will grow an audience.

  • Keep the podcast playlist devoted to full episodes of one show.
  • Use a title that accurately identifies the show, and explain its subject in the description.
  • Separate clips and Shorts from the full-episode playlist.
  • Check eligibility and copyright compliance, especially if an episode includes material you did not create.

Measure performance in YouTube Studio

Use podcast analytics in Studio to make decisions from your own channel’s audience data. YouTube Help describes views and watch time, plus deeper views that can include traffic sources, audience demographics, audience retention, revenue, impressions, and click-through rate. The available metrics and labels may change, so confirm what appears in your current Studio interface.

Look at traffic sources and retention alongside views: they can help you see how people find episodes and where they continue watching or listening. Use those observations to guide episode topics, packaging, and promotion rather than treating discovery features as assured growth.

Check eligibility and playback settings

  • Some playlists are ineligible for podcast features, including playlists with content the creator does not own.
  • Copyright-policy violations may affect podcast eligibility. Make sure you have the rights needed for music, clips, archival footage, and other material used in an episode.
  • YouTube podcast videos can be available for audio-only playback. YouTube says that disabling this requires removing the video from all podcasts in the video’s settings.

An audio episode will not appear as a YouTube episode

An MP3 by itself is not a YouTube podcast episode. Prepare and deliver the episode as a video, either by uploading it or through a supported distribution route.

Clips or Shorts are cluttering the podcast

Remove clips and unrelated uploads from the main podcast playlist. Put them in separate playlists; Shorts made to support a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music.

Episodes play in the wrong order

Set the playlist order to match the format: newest to oldest for episodic shows, or oldest to newest for serial shows.

The show does not appear in a discovery feature

Discovery benefits are conditional. Review the playlist’s public visibility, content ownership, and copyright compliance, and verify the podcast is correctly set up in Studio. Eligibility does not guarantee placement or recommendations.

Audio-only playback remains available

YouTube says disabling audio-only playback requires removing the video from all podcasts through its video settings.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want to keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded material rather than publish a conventional podcast playlist, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video streams to YouTube, not camera-based podcast recording or podcast playlist setup. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
