To create a basic emergency playlist, prepare rights-cleared clips in OBS Studio, then loop one file with a Media Source or several files with a VLC Video source. This gives you a fallback you can switch to while OBS is still running; it does not automatically replace a failed stream or recover a crashed computer or lost internet connection. For those risks, plan and test a separate backup encoder.
What an OBS fallback playlist can—and cannot—do
A looping source is a content fallback: it gives the operator prerecorded material to show instead of the normal program. It does not provide automatic failover by itself. If OBS stops, the computer loses power, or the network fails, a playlist on that computer cannot restart the encoder or restore connectivity.
YouTube’s documented encoder failover procedure uses a separately configured backup encoder. YouTube advises testing by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. The documentation does not describe a native YouTube feature that automatically substitutes a local playlist when the live program disappears. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Choose the fallback setup that fits your material
| Option | Best for | What it covers and what it needs |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source with Loop | One local video file | Loops the file within OBS. Built into OBS, but does not protect against encoder or network failure. |
| OBS VLC Video with Loop Playlist | Several local files in a sequence or shuffle | Loops a list of files. Requires VLC installed with bitness compatible with OBS; does not provide automatic failover. |
| YouTube backup encoder | Encoder-path redundancy | A separate encoder must be configured and tested; the operator should verify that the player rolls over. |
| HLS backup ingestion | Compatible HLS encoder needing a backup ingestion endpoint | Requires a compatible HLS setup. HLS has higher latency than RTMP, and a backup ingestion URL does not establish playlist-based content switching. |
For a practical fallback, use an OBS source for the prerecorded material and treat encoder redundancy as a separate plan. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance describes backup ingestion for compatible setups, not an emergency playlist feature.

Prepare the emergency clips
- Choose short, suitable material. Use rights-cleared clips appropriate to the channel. A simple slate, update, or other intentional holding content can be clearer than silence or a blank screen; that is an editorial choice, not a technical guarantee.
- Keep the files available to OBS. Store the media on the computer running OBS and open each file to confirm that its picture and audio play as intended. OBS’s Media Sources guide describes supported source behavior and file playback.
- Decide the order. A predictable sequence is usually easier to review for emergency messaging than shuffle. Check that every item is suitable wherever it appears in the sequence.
- Keep the stream key secure. Treat it like a credential. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on the stream again.
Build a looping source in OBS
Loop one video with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene that should contain the fallback.
- In the Sources box, select + and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source, name it clearly (for example, “Emergency fallback”), and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties, then confirm the source and check the preview.
- Play the source and verify its audio and picture. If it is meant to replace the normal program, rehearse how the operator will make that scene or source visible.
Loop several videos with VLC Video
- Install VLC on the OBS computer. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source; its bitness must match OBS.
- In the fallback scene, select + in Sources and choose VLC Video.
- Add the prepared local files to the playlist in the intended order.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Choose shuffle only if randomized playback is appropriate for the fallback.
- Preview the playlist from beginning to end, checking each clip’s picture and sound as well as the transition between files.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation covers both Media Source playback and VLC Video. If VLC does not appear or the source fails to load, check that VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS.
Connect OBS to the YouTube live stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream that the encoder will use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s streaming settings. Use the values for the intended YouTube broadcast and keep the key private.
- Start OBS early enough to inspect the incoming signal in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended video and audio before relying on the fallback.
- Check the published watch page and, where practical, confirm playback on a mobile device. Monitor both sound and picture.
- Rehearse the actual switch to the fallback scene or source, then rehearse returning to the normal program. Confirm who is authorized and available to operate it.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain stream URL and key setup, previewing the feed, and ending a stream.

Plan for failures beyond playlist playback
Protect the stream path
YouTube recommends a reliable network and 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. This is an operational recommendation, not a guarantee that an internet connection will remain available. Check the actual upload capacity available to the encoder and leave room above the stream’s required bitrate. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Configure and test encoder failover separately
A backup encoder is a distinct path, not another playlist setting. Configure it in advance and test YouTube’s documented procedure: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its network cable, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. Confirm which encoder carries the fallback material and who will perform the switch.

Document the response away from the streaming computer
- Name the operator responsible for switching to the fallback.
- Write down the alert route, recovery steps, and escalation contact somewhere accessible if the OBS computer is unavailable.
- Record how to restore the normal program and how to verify the watch page after recovery.
- Test the procedure periodically; a playlist that has not been played through is not a verified fallback.
Account for long-stream archive and DVR limits
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For longer streams, do not assume a complete archive: YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. A 24/7 channel should plan its own recording and retention needs rather than treating the live broadcast as a guaranteed archive. See YouTube’s encoder instructions and its DVR guidance.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The fallback clip plays once and stops | Loop is not enabled for the selected source. | Open source properties and enable Loop for Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video. |
| VLC Video is unavailable or will not play files | VLC may not be installed, or its bitness may not match OBS. | Install VLC and check that it matches OBS’s bitness; reload the source and test the files. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed | The stream URL or key may be wrong, or the encoder may not be sending successfully. | Verify the URL and key in YouTube Studio and OBS, then inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room. |
| The stream drops when the primary encoder fails | A local looping source does not cover encoder, computer, or network failure. | Configure a separate backup encoder and test player rollover using YouTube’s failover procedure. |
| Playback stutters or disconnects | The connection may be unreliable or lack upload headroom. | Check network reliability and available upload capacity; YouTube recommends 20% headroom. |
| A long broadcast cannot be rewound or fully replayed | YouTube’s DVR and archive behavior has limits for streams beyond 12 hours. | Plan separate recording and retention if a complete archive is required. |
