What an always-on YouTube channel does—and does not do
An always-on channel uses YouTube Live to broadcast prerecorded sessions continuously or in a repeating playlist. An encoder sends the video to YouTube; it is not the same as uploading each session as a regular video. A livestream may have a watch page while it is active, but its replay is a separate matter: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Plan for continuous playback and replay preservation as two different jobs.
You can use a computer running encoder software, dedicated encoder hardware, or a cloud service that sends prerecorded video to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes these options and lists a cloud tool described as supporting 24/7 prerecorded streaming. That listing is not an endorsement or a guarantee of any provider’s current uptime, price, or service quality. Compare whether the service loops your sessions, connects to YouTube with an encoder stream URL and key, and fits your archive and monitoring needs. YouTube’s encoder guidance
Check channel eligibility before preparing the broadcast
- Verify the channel and confirm that live streaming is available in YouTube Studio.
- Check for live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days; YouTube lists this as an eligibility condition.
- If this is the channel’s first livestream, allow up to 24 hours for activation after enabling the feature.

Prepare sessions and clear the rights
Build a playlist that suits uninterrupted listening
Arrange the recordings in the intended order and decide whether they should play once or repeat. Check the transitions between sessions: abrupt changes in loudness, long silent gaps, or a session ending that sounds like a final sign-off can be distracting when the playlist loops. These are production checks, not YouTube requirements.
Confirm permission for every element
Use recordings, music, images, and ambient audio that you created or are properly cleared to use in a YouTube livestream in the territories where viewers may watch. A meditation or study track being available online does not by itself grant broadcast rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace the image with a placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. A license may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams and the YouTube Terms of Service, including the livestream terms. The terms require you to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights.

Decide whether a microphone is useful
A microphone is optional. It can help if you are recording spoken guidance, but an already-recorded session does not need a microphone connected during the broadcast. YouTube lists microphones among external hardware that can be used with an encoder; it does not require one or endorse a particular model. YouTube’s encoder guidance
Set up a do-it-yourself broadcast
- Choose an encoder. Use encoder software on a computer or compatible encoder hardware that can send a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live. Confirm that the workflow can loop the sessions for as long as you intend to broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a livestream and select the encoder workflow. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- Connect the encoder. Paste YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Load the recordings and check the output. Set the playlist order and looping behavior in the encoder. Confirm that the selected video and audio are the intended versions, and that the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube stream.
- Preview before going live. Return to the Live Control Room and wait for the encoder preview. Check the picture, audio, and stream status there before starting the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the connection and preview workflow: set up your encoder.
- Start the stream and verify it as a viewer. Open the channel or stream watch page separately to confirm it plays as expected. Check again after launch rather than assuming a successful preview means the full broadcast is healthy.
- Keep monitoring and preserve files. Watch for interruptions and audio or video problems. If recording an archive locally, confirm that the file is being created and growing. Keep the original source files independently of both the live stream and the YouTube replay.
Plan for archives separately from continuous playback
YouTube automatically archives livestreams shorter than 12 hours. It recommends keeping a local backup, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That means a single always-on broadcast is not a dependable way to create a complete replay of every session. Retain the originals, and use local recording or another archive workflow if you need a full copy. Test the connection and monitor the stream
Before committing to continuous playback, test the encoder and internet connection under the conditions you expect to use. YouTube advises testing the connection and leaving bandwidth headroom rather than using all available upload capacity. Confirm that the Live Control Room preview is stable, the local archive is growing if enabled, and audio and video remain intact. Continue to check the watch page after launch. - Preview is missing: Check that the encoder is running and that the correct server URL and stream key were entered. Allow for first-time live activation if you have just enabled streaming.
- The stream will not start: Recheck channel eligibility and any live-stream restrictions, then confirm the encoder is connected to the intended stream in the Live Control Room.
- Playback drops or becomes unstable: Test the network and reduce competing upload traffic. Leave bandwidth headroom, then check the encoder connection and YouTube stream status.
- Audio or picture is wrong: Check the encoder’s selected source and playlist, then compare its output with the Live Control Room preview and the public watch page.
- A rights-related interruption occurs: Review the specific material in the recording and verify that you have the necessary livestream rights. If a licensed work is being flagged, contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting; a license by itself may not stop an interruption.
- No complete replay appears: Check the stream’s duration. YouTube may not capture broadcasts longer than 12 hours, so retrieve the local archive if one was recorded and retain the source files.
