To create an Instagram Highlight, go to your profile, tap New or Story highlight, select one or more Stories, choose a name and cover, and tap Done. The selected Stories can remain in the Highlight after the original 24-hour Story period ends.
Instagram Highlights let you keep selected Stories on your profile after the usual 24-hour Story period ends. To create one, open Instagram, go to your profile, tap New (or Story highlight), choose the Stories to include, name the Highlight, select a cover, and tap Done.
How to create a new Instagram Highlight
- Open the Instagram app on an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad.
- Go to your profile by tapping your profile picture.
- Below your profile information, tap New. On some accounts or app versions, this may be labeled Story highlight.
- Enter a name for the Highlight. Keep it short because the name appears below the circular Highlight icon.
- Select one or more Stories you want to save in the collection.
- Continue to the cover-selection screen and choose the image that will represent the Highlight.
- Tap Done to publish the Highlight to your profile.
Instagram’s labels and button placement can differ by device, account, and app rollout. If you do not see New, look for Story highlight in the same profile area.
What happens to a Story after you add it?
A normal Instagram Story disappears from the active Story after 24 hours. When you add it to a Highlight, however, Instagram says it remains visible in that Highlight until you remove it. Creating a Highlight does not require you to keep the Story active for the full 24 hours.

The people who were allowed to see the original Story can also see the resulting Highlight. A Highlight is therefore not automatically public on every account. Your account’s privacy settings and the Story’s audience settings still matter.
How to add an older Story to an Instagram Highlight
You can add an older Story after it has disappeared from your active Story, provided the Story is available in your Stories Archive.
- Open your Instagram profile.
- Tap the Highlight you want to update.
- Tap More or the Highlight’s Options control.
- Select Edit.
- Open the Stories section.
- Select the archived Story or Stories you want to add.
- Continue through the editing screens and tap Done to save.
Instagram says Stories are saved to Stories Archive by default unless you turn that setting off, although Stories Archive and Highlights are not available for all accounts. If you deleted a Story before it disappeared naturally, Instagram warns that it may not have been saved to the archive.
How to edit a Highlight
You can change both the name and the Stories inside an existing Highlight.
- Open the Highlight from your profile.
- Tap More or Options.
- Choose Edit.
- Change the Highlight name if necessary.
- On the Story-selection screen, select additional Stories or unselect Stories already included.
- Tap Done to save the changes.
This lets you reorganize a collection without creating a new Highlight from scratch.

How to remove one Story from a Highlight
- Open the relevant Highlight on your profile.
- Navigate to the Story you want to remove.
- Open that Story’s options menu.
- Select Delete and confirm.
This removes the selected Story from the Highlight. It is a content-management action, not the same as deleting your Instagram account. Removing a Story from a Highlight also does not necessarily mean that its archived copy has been deleted.
How to choose a Highlight cover
The cover is the image viewers see as the Highlight’s circular profile icon. Instagram includes a cover-selection step when you create a Highlight, and you can also update the cover while editing the Highlight.
For a clear, professional-looking profile:
- Use one simple symbol or visual cue rather than a detailed scene.
- Choose strong contrast so the image remains recognizable at a small size.
- Keep important text or artwork near the center because the cover is displayed in a compact circular shape.
- Use a consistent color scheme if you are making several Highlights.
- Make the cover reflect the collection—for example, a camera symbol for “Behind the scenes” or a map symbol for “Travel.”
These are design recommendations, not evidence that Instagram gives a ranking advantage to a particular cover style.

If you want to make an image specifically for the cover, you can use Instagram Highlight cover templates or another social-media design tool. Canva’s official materials document Instagram Story and social-media template use cases, but using a design tool is optional: Instagram does not require a paid template, special camera, tripod, ring light, or other equipment to create a Highlight.

Use separate Highlights for genuinely different topics. A small number of clearly named collections is usually easier to browse than one large, miscellaneous archive.

The Story is older and missing
Check whether Stories Archive is enabled and whether the Story was actually archived. A Story deleted before its normal 24-hour expiration may not be available there. Instagram also notes that Archive and Highlights are not available for all accounts.

Look for Story highlight instead. Instagram may display that label rather than New, depending on the account and app version.
Someone else cannot see the Highlight
Review the audience that could view the original Story, along with your account privacy and Story-visibility settings. The Highlight inherits the relevant visibility limitations of the original Story; it should not be assumed to be visible to everyone.
You need to correct the collection
Open the Highlight, choose Edit, and revise its name or Story selection. To remove only one item, open that Story inside the Highlight, use its options menu, and choose Delete.

What you need—and what you do not need
You need access to the Instagram app and eligible Story content. You do not need special hardware or paid software. A phone, tripod, ring light, or design subscription may help you produce better original Stories, but none is required to create or manage an Instagram Highlight.

- Open Instagram and visit your profile.
- Tap New or Story highlight.
- Select one or more Stories.
- Enter a concise name.
- Choose a recognizable cover.
- Tap Done.
