It lets you build a playlist cover inside Spotify rather than only uploading an image made elsewhere. The image-upload option is older: Spotify added mobile uploads in 2020. Availability of the newer editor can vary by market, app version and playlist, so here’s how to find it and what to try if it’s missing.
What Spotify’s cover-art creator does
The editor is a lightweight way to personalize playlist artwork. Spotify lists tools including images, text, background colors, gradients, image masking, visual effects and stickers. Some sticker collections have been created for specific artist campaigns, such as the Tyler, The Creator collection Spotify announced in February 2025. This is useful for quick customization, but it is not a full professional design suite with the detailed controls or reusable design workflow that some users may want.
Spotify announced the creator as a beta on October 22, 2024, initially rolling it out across 65 markets on iOS and Android. That launch figure describes the initial rollout; Spotify’s current support page does not provide a complete list of markets where the feature is now available. Spotify’s launch announcement and current support instructions are the best references for the feature and its present documented workflow.
How to create cover art in the Spotify app
- Open Spotify on an iPhone, iPad or Android phone or tablet.
- Go to Your Library and open a playlist you created.
- Tap Edit at the top of the playlist.
- Tap Change playlist cover, then choose Create cover art.
- Arrange the available design elements, such as text, images, colors or stickers.
- Tap Save, then reopen the playlist to confirm the cover appears.
Spotify’s launch announcement also described a route through the playlist’s three-dot menu, then Create cover art. If that is what your version shows, use it. The different labels and routes may reflect interface or rollout differences; Spotify’s current support page documents the Edit-based path. See Spotify’s current cover instructions.

Who can use the creator?
Spotify’s support page lists the feature for both Free and Premium users on mobile and tablet. The launch instructions say to use a playlist you personally created, or create a new one. They do not establish that you can change covers on Spotify-made, editorial or other people’s playlists. They also do not clarify whether every collaborator on a collaborative playlist can change its cover.
The in-app creator is documented for mobile and tablet, not desktop or the web player. Spotify does support uploading an already-made image from desktop or web, which is a different feature. Because the creator began as a regional beta and Spotify’s support page does not list every supported country, access is not guaranteed for every account worldwide.

What to try if “Create cover art” is missing
- Update Spotify. Check for an update in your device’s app store. Spotify’s 2025 sticker announcement also advises using an up-to-date mobile app: Spotify’s sticker announcement.
- Check the playlist. Try one you created yourself. If needed, make a new personal playlist and look for the option there.
- Use the current documented route. Open the playlist, tap Edit, then Change playlist cover. The three-dot-menu route may not match your interface.
- Restart the app and refresh your account. Fully close and reopen Spotify. If the account still appears out of sync, sign out and back in.
- Consider device and market availability. The creator is documented for mobile and tablet, and its initial rollout covered 65 markets; the available official material does not establish a current complete country list. Anecdotal user reports describe controls appearing or disappearing during rollout, but they are not a guarantee of availability: Spotify Community discussion.
If the editor remains unavailable, you can still upload a finished image as the playlist cover.
How to upload an existing cover image instead
On mobile or tablet
- Open Your Library and select the playlist.
- Tap Edit, then Change cover image.
- Choose an image and tap Save.
On desktop or the web player
- Open Your Library and select a playlist you created.
- Select the playlist image and choose a photo.
- Click Save.
Spotify has supported uploading a custom image from a phone since 2020, before the in-app creator arrived. Its December 2020 announcement described mobile uploads for Free and Premium users. Read Spotify’s original mobile-upload instructions or check the current support page for device-specific steps.

One saved custom design per playlist
Spotify’s launch announcement says only one custom cover design can be saved for a playlist at a time. Making and saving another design replaces the previous custom design; Spotify does not describe the creator as a gallery for switching among saved versions. Keep a copy of an image elsewhere if you may want to reuse it.
When to use Spotify’s editor or another design tool
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify’s cover-art creator | Quick cover customization directly in the mobile or tablet app. | Limited to the controls Spotify provides, and the creator is not documented for desktop or web. |
| Spotify image upload | Using a finished image, including when working on desktop or web. | You must create or obtain the artwork elsewhere; it does not offer the in-app composition tools. |
| External design tools such as Canva or Adobe Express | More typography control, templates, desktop-first work or a consistent set of covers. | These are additional services, not requirements for Spotify. Check each provider’s current features, pricing and terms before choosing one. |
Use Spotify’s editor when speed and convenience matter more than fine-grained control. An external tool may make more sense for repeatable branding or a design you will use beyond Spotify; you can then upload the finished image.

Use images you have permission to use
Spotify warns users against artwork that violates copyright, trademark or personal-image rights. Choose images you own or have permission to use, and consider privacy before adding photos of yourself or someone else.
