To make a countdown for a live stream in Canva, open a design, add Canva’s Countdown Timer app from Apps Marketplace, or customize a countdown video template. If you need the countdown to run inside a third-party streaming program such as OBS, Canva’s official materials do not confirm that the app provides a live-updating browser source. A prepared video clip and a live overlay are different things.
Choose the kind of countdown you need

Canva’s Countdown Timer listing describes the app as a way to “Add countdown timers to your designs effortlessly.” It is powered by TickCounter, and Canva says it can read and change the contents of the design while open. View the Countdown Timer app listing.
Add the Countdown Timer app to a Canva design
- Sign in to Canva and open the design where you want the countdown.
- Open Apps Marketplace and search for Countdown Timer.
- Select the app and let it load in the editor. Follow any setup prompts shown there.
- Check the result in the design. Adjust its placement, scale, and surrounding content so it remains legible at the size viewers will see.
The app is listed as free with any Canva plan. Because its listing says it can read and change design contents while open, review the app permissions and use it only with a design you are comfortable sharing with that app.
Start from a livestream countdown template
If you want a complete visual rather than a timer added to an existing design, browse Canva’s livestream templates. The collection includes countdown examples such as “Black Neon Light Livestream Countdown Timer Video” and “Red Black White Vintage Screen Countdown Timer Livestream Preview Video.” Open a suitable template and adapt its colors, text, and layout to your channel.

- Keep the numerals large enough to read at stream scale.
- Leave important text away from areas where platform controls or other graphics may cover it.
- Use colors and branding that fit the rest of your stream.
Turn the design into a countdown video
- Open the design in Canva’s Video Editor.
- Use the timeline, text, overlays, and animation tools to refine the visual and create the progression you want.
- Preview the timeline to confirm the numbers actually count down over time. A static design—or a date-based counter—does not become a running countdown simply because it is placed in a stream.
- Use Canva’s video sharing or export options to prepare the asset, then check the finished video in the workflow you will use on stream.
Canva describes these editing and output features, but that does not establish that the Countdown Timer app itself exports a continuously updating overlay for third-party broadcast software.
Use Canva’s presentation timer when presenting directly
If you are presenting the design from Canva, the presentation timer is a separate option. Canva Help Center says: “Press any number on the keyboard to add a timer when you present: 1 for one minute, 2 for two minutes, and so on.” This is a presentation-mode effect, not evidence of an exported countdown clip or a general-purpose overlay for streaming software. Check the countdown in your stream workflow
Before going live, preview the finished result in the actual setup you plan to use. Canva’s official app, video editor, and presentation materials do not document how to connect the Countdown Timer app to third-party broadcast software or confirm browser-source support. Do not assume the app itself will keep updating as an external overlay; use a prepared video asset if that is what you have created, and verify how it appears in your chosen workflow.
