To cover a song legally, get the permissions needed for the song and every recording or voice you use, then check that your cover tool and release platform allow your intended use. A cover generator can change the vocal or arrangement; using it does not itself establish that you have permission to publish, monetize, or distribute the result.
Step 1: Identify What Your Cover Uses
Write down the source material before opening a cover tool. Are you creating a new performance of a song, transforming an existing recording, or using both? If you upload a commercial recording, the project may involve rights in that recording as well as the underlying song. If you use a recognizable singer’s voice or a voice model based on someone else, confirm consent for that use. The applicable permissions depend on the material, use, territory, and release route; check with the relevant rights holders or a qualified adviser for your circumstances.
- New performance: Record your own vocal or instrumental parts and identify the song whose lyrics or melody you are covering.
- Existing recording: Note whether the upload includes a released master, samples, or isolated stems from someone else’s recording.
- Voice conversion: Record whose voice is being imitated or used as a model, and whether that person has consented to the intended release.
Step 2: Get Permission for Your Intended Release
Contact the relevant rights holders or licensing representatives and describe the actual plan: the song, whether you will use an existing recording, the territories, platforms, whether the release will be monetized, and whether you will use an AI-generated or converted voice. Ask what permissions apply and keep the written response, license, and any limits alongside the project files. A tool’s paid plan or commercial-use wording does not establish that you have cleared rights in a song, recording, or person’s voice.
Check the cover service’s own terms as well. FineShare Singify says commercial use is restricted under its service terms; HitPaw says commercial use may require separate authorization or licensing; Media.io says its free plan is for personal use and that commercial use requires a paid plan. These statements describe the services, not permission from the song or recording rights holders. For every service, read the current terms and confirm that your specific release is allowed.

Step 3: Choose a Workflow That Matches Your Source
For a New Vocal Cover
Start with a vocal recording you made or are authorized to use. FineShare Singify supports solo, duet, and chorus modes, with pitch and key controls and MP3 or FLAC downloads. Neither product description establishes support for a particular genre, song, or release license, so check the vendor’s current terms and confirm the controls suit your arrangement before committing to a workflow.
For a Cover Made From an Existing Track
Do not assume that separating a vocal or instrumental makes the source recording free to reuse. LALAL.AI separates vocals and instruments, but its free Starter plan provides previews and does not include full result downloads; its product information does not establish permission to use separated material. Media.io AI Song Cover Generator accepts audio or video uploads and offers previews before download, while Maistro supports stem separation and per-stem browser mixing. Check each service’s terms and secure the permissions relevant to the source before uploading or releasing material.

For a Local or Self-Hosted Workflow
UtaiSynthesizer combines separation, voice conversion, synthesis, and model training in a Windows workflow; its information says commercial use is restricted across some model weights. AICoverGen accepts YouTube links or local audio and offers pitch and mixing controls, but commercial use is restricted. UtaForge AI supports lyric and timing edits and subtitled video output, but its project is described as Alpha and its external models, voice libraries, and media have separate terms. Local processing changes where work happens; it does not establish rights to the song, source audio, voice, models, or media.
Step 4: Keep a Rights Record With the Session
Before generating or exporting, make a folder for the project and save the material that documents your decisions:

- The song title, writers or publisher information you have, and the rights-holder contacts you approached.
- Written permissions, license terms, territory or platform limits, and any required credit language.
- The source recording and stems used, where they came from, and the permissions covering them.
- Consent for any identifiable person whose voice is cloned, transformed, or imitated, plus the applicable voice-model terms.
- The cover service’s terms in effect for your project and the release platform’s current upload rules.
Step 5: Review the Export and Platform Rules Before Upload
Listen to the finished file and check that it contains only material covered by your permissions. Add credits and disclosures required by the rights holders, cover service, or release platform. Spotify said in 2025 that vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized it, and that it supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits. In August 2026 it announced an “AI Persona” badge for artist identities that may be AI-generated. These are Spotify statements; check the rules of the platform where you plan to release, since requirements can differ and change.
If a permission is missing, unclear, or narrower than your planned release, pause the upload and ask the relevant rights holder or a qualified adviser what is allowed. Keep the decision and any response with the project record.
