To deliver an existing RTMP stream to WebRTC viewers, send it to a media server or gateway that accepts RTMP and provides WebRTC playback. The server bridges the protocols; whether it can pass the media through or must transcode it depends on the codecs and profiles your source and destination support.

What RTMP-to-WebRTC conversion involves

RTMP is commonly used to publish a live feed to a server. WebRTC is used to deliver interactive, low-latency media to compatible players. A bridge receives the RTMP feed, makes it available through a WebRTC playback path, and handles the signaling and network configuration needed for viewers to connect. SRS explicitly describes RTMP-to-WebRTC conversion, while OvenMediaEngine documents RTMP input and WebRTC output.

Conversion does not automatically mean re-encoding every frame. If the incoming codecs and profiles are compatible with the WebRTC delivery path, a server may forward the media without transcoding. If they are not compatible, or you need filtering or other processing, you need a transcoding step. OvenMediaEngine documents an embedded transcoder; MediaMTX points to FFmpeg when transcoding, filtering, or unsupported protocol handling is required.

“WebRTC” does not guarantee a particular end-to-end latency. The result depends on the encoder, ingest path, server, network, and player. OvenMediaEngine describes its WebRTC output as sub-second, but that is a product capability description, not a measured guarantee for your deployment.

Choose a bridge that fits your stream

Option What its documentation establishes Consider when
SRS The open-source media server’s LTS v6 overview explicitly names RTMP-to-WebRTC conversion. You want to self-host a media server and are comfortable configuring and operating it.
OvenMediaEngine Its guide documents RTMP input, WebRTC output, and an embedded transcoder. You need a server with documented input/output options and may need transcoding. Check the guide for the version you deploy.
MediaMTX with WHIP and, if needed, FFmpeg MediaMTX documents forwarding through WHIP and recommends FFmpeg for transcoding, filtering, or unsupported protocol handling. Forwarding is sufficient, or you can add a separate media-processing step and your destination supports the required WHIP workflow.
OvenMedia Cloud OvenMedia Labs presents it as a managed streaming service based on OvenMediaEngine. The cited product information does not state commercial terms. You prefer a managed service and can confirm that its current features, regions, security, scale, and terms meet your needs.

Compare options on source and destination protocol support, codec compatibility, latency goals, publisher and viewer scale, WebRTC network reachability, monitoring and recovery, and who will operate the system. No one option is best for every deployment.

Set up an RTMP-to-WebRTC path

  1. Select the bridge and check its current guide. Evaluate SRS, OvenMediaEngine, or MediaMTX against your required protocols and processing needs. Follow documentation for the specific release you deploy; configuration keys, signaling, and network requirements vary by product and version.
  2. Configure RTMP publishing. Set your encoder or upstream source to publish to the server’s RTMP ingest address and stream name. Treat the stream key or publishing credentials as secrets. Use encrypted transport where the server supports it and your deployment requires it.
  3. Enable WebRTC delivery. Configure the server’s WebRTC listener and signaling, then make sure it can advertise network candidates or use relay services as required by your network design. Do not copy a generic port recipe: the correct settings depend on the server, deployment, and firewall or NAT.
  4. Check video and audio compatibility. Confirm the codecs and profiles accepted across the entire path. If the source cannot be delivered as-is, configure the server’s transcoder or a supported FFmpeg processing step. MediaMTX documents FFmpeg for cases that require transcoding, filtering, or handling an unsupported protocol.
  5. Test from the viewer’s real network. Confirm that the server receives the RTMP feed and that WebRTC playback connects, renders both audio and video, and behaves acceptably through reconnects and changes in viewer bandwidth. Testing only from the server’s local network may miss reachability problems affecting actual viewers.

Codec and network details that commonly decide whether it works

Do not assume RTMP and WebRTC use the same media constraints

Check both audio and video requirements for your particular bridge. A workflow that accepts a codec over RTMP may not accept it over another ingest or delivery path. For example, AWS specifies AAC-LC audio for RTMP and Opus for WHIP in its IVS real-time stages. Those are IVS-specific constraints, not universal WebRTC rules.

WebRTC needs a reachable connection path

A correctly configured RTMP ingest does not by itself prove viewers can reach the WebRTC service. Signaling, advertised network candidates, firewalls, NAT, and any relay configuration must suit the server deployment and the viewers’ networks. Use the selected product’s current documentation for exact ports and settings; the available product references do not establish one universal network recipe.

Treat latency as a whole-path property

Measure the experience from the source to a player on the networks your audience uses. Encoder buffering, ingest, server processing, network conditions, and player behavior all contribute. A server’s advertised capability should not be read as a promise of the latency every viewer will see.

Amazon IVS real-time stages: a service-specific case

AWS documents RTMP/RTMPS and WHIP as ingest options for IVS real-time stages. That documents compatible publishing choices for IVS; it does not, by itself, establish that IVS accepts an arbitrary existing RTMP feed and republishes it as WebRTC. If that is your goal, verify the architecture against AWS’s current IVS stream-ingest documentation rather than treating ingest support as proof of protocol conversion.

The following constraints are for the documented IVS real-time-stage workflow only, not general WebRTC requirements:

  • AWS specifies H.264 Baseline video, a one- or two-second IDR interval, 10–60 fps, zero B-frames, 160p–720p, and a maximum video bitrate of 8.5 Mbps.
  • AWS specifies AAC-LC audio for RTMP and Opus for WHIP.
  • AWS warns that RTMP encoders with B-frames may be disconnected and recommends veryfast and zerolatency settings for H.264.

For its documented RTMP publishing workflow, AWS says to create a stage and ingest configuration, associate the ingest configuration with a stage, and use the resulting endpoint and stream key. It recommends RTMPS unless a verified use case requires plain RTMP. Its OBS example recommends one- or two-second keyframes, disabling B-frames, and staying below 2.5 Mbps for that workflow because it lacks simulcast; AWS also says RTMP streams must contain both audio and video. These instructions are specific to that IVS publishing path. See the IVS RTMP publishing guide for the current procedure.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom What to check Next step
The server does not receive the RTMP feed Ingest address, stream name, credentials, encoder state, and whether the selected server has RTMP input enabled. Correct the publishing destination or server configuration, then confirm the server registers an incoming stream before testing playback.
The stream arrives, but WebRTC playback does not connect WebRTC listener and signaling configuration, network candidates, firewall/NAT reachability, and any required relay service. Test from the target viewer network and follow the exact network guidance for your server version; do not assume local playback proves public reachability.
Video or audio is missing, rejected, or unstable Whether the source codec and profile are accepted by the selected WebRTC path; check audio independently from video. Use a compatible source format or configure a supported transcoding step. Do not apply another service’s codec rules as universal requirements.
Playback works but latency is higher than expected Buffering and processing along the complete encoder-to-player path, plus network and player behavior. Measure at a representative viewer location and isolate the stage contributing delay before changing encoder or server settings.
An IVS RTMP publisher disconnects For IVS real-time stages, check the service-specific requirements, including B-frames, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio/video presence. Adjust to the current AWS documentation for the specific IVS workflow; do not apply those limits to unrelated servers.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a different workflow, not an RTMP-to-WebRTC converter: it keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded content, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not go live from a camera or stream to platforms other than YouTube.
