To make a ProRes video smaller for YouTube, export it as an MP4 with H.264 video and compatible audio, then choose settings suited to the source’s resolution, frame rate, and SDR or HDR color. HandBrake offers a graphical workflow; FFmpeg offers command-line control. There is no fixed compression ratio: the resulting size and picture quality depend on the footage and encoding choices.

What changes when you convert ProRes to MP4?

ProRes is a family of editing-oriented codecs used across a wide range of source formats, including HD, 2K, 4K, 6K, 8K, and larger workflows. Apple’s April 2022 white paper describes ProRes formats with full-frame 10-bit 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 workflows. Converting to H.264 can produce a smaller, more upload-friendly file, but the reduction is not a guaranteed percentage: duration, resolution, frame rate, image detail, audio, and encoder settings all affect the result. Apple ProRes white paper (April 2022)

MP4 is a container, not a video codec. For a broadly compatible YouTube upload, use an MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio where suitable. YouTube also recommends keeping the frame rate the same as the recording. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings

Check the source before choosing settings

  • Resolution and frame rate: Find the source’s dimensions and recorded frame rate. Avoid changing either without a project-specific reason.
  • Color: Identify whether the footage is SDR or HDR. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR; HDR uses separate guidance, so do not apply an SDR conversion blindly to HDR footage.
  • Audio: Check which audio tracks are present and which you need in the exported file. Use a compatible audio format such as AAC-LC for a standard upload workflow.
  • Duration and file size: Note the runtime and available working storage. Keeping both source and export may require substantial disk space.

Choose output settings for YouTube

Use the source’s frame rate and select a bitrate reference for the output resolution and frame-rate class. YouTube’s figures are recommendations, not a promise of a particular file size or visual result.

SDR output YouTube bitrate reference How to use it
1080p, standard frame rate 8 Mbps A reference for an H.264 upload; the actual file size depends on duration and encoding.
2160p (4K), standard frame rate 35–45 Mbps A reference range for an H.264 upload; it does not predict an exact size.

For other resolutions or higher frame rates, consult YouTube’s resolution- and frame-rate-specific table rather than extrapolating from these two examples. The page also includes detailed specifications for partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager; those partner-specific details are not universal upload requirements. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR and directs HDR uploads to separate HDR instructions. YouTube upload encoding settings

Convert with HandBrake

HandBrake is a graphical option if you prefer presets to a command line. Its official Creator presets are intended for videos going to hosting services such as YouTube. A preset is a starting point, not proof that one configuration is best for every ProRes file. HandBrake official presets

  1. Open the ProRes source in HandBrake and confirm the detected title, duration, and tracks.
  2. Choose a Creator preset that fits the intended resolution and frame-rate needs. Review the preset rather than assuming it matches the source automatically.
  3. Set the output container to MP4 and the video encoder to H.264. Keep the source frame rate unless you have a deliberate reason to change it.
  4. Review the picture dimensions and scaling. Preserve the intended output resolution; do not upscale a smaller source merely to match a higher-resolution bitrate reference.
  5. Review quality or bitrate controls and use YouTube’s table for the relevant resolution and frame-rate class as a guide. A higher target bitrate generally means a larger file; the acceptable balance depends on the footage and your size-versus-quality priorities.
  6. Check the audio track selection and output format, then choose a destination with enough free space for the export.
  7. Start the encode. Before uploading, play the MP4 and inspect the whole video or representative sections for picture, sound, duration, and color.

Convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suited to readers comfortable with command-line tools and encoding terminology. Its documentation describes configurable encoders and options, but does not establish one tested ProRes-to-H.264 recipe that fits every input. Check your installed build and inspect the input streams before choosing settings. FFmpeg documentation

  1. Verify that FFmpeg is installed and that your build includes the encoder you intend to use.
  2. Inspect the input file’s video and audio streams, resolution, frame rate, and color characteristics. Confirm which audio track should be retained.
  3. Choose MP4 as the output container and H.264 for video; choose compatible audio such as AAC-LC if you are converting the audio.
  4. Keep the recorded frame rate unless the project requires a change. Choose a bitrate or quality-based setting according to your desired file-size and image-quality balance, using YouTube’s applicable bitrate reference as guidance.
  5. Handle color deliberately: use BT.709 guidance for SDR, and follow YouTube’s separate HDR guidance for HDR material rather than treating it as SDR.
  6. Write to a new output file so the source remains intact. Play the exported MP4 and check image, sound, duration, and color before upload.

FFmpeg options vary by encoder and build, so consult the documentation for the specific encoder options available in your installation rather than copying a generic command that may not suit the source. The documentation cited here covers encoder configuration; it is not a tested conversion command.

Estimate the file size and balance quality

For a rough planning estimate, video data at a constant bitrate grows with runtime: bitrate in megabits per second multiplied by seconds, divided by eight, gives an approximate number of megabytes for the video stream alone. Audio, container overhead, and variable-bitrate behavior affect the final size. Treat the result as an estimate, not a prediction. A longer documentary at the same settings will be larger than a shorter one, and complex or detailed footage may need more data to retain comparable visual quality.

If the output is still too large, consider lowering the bitrate or choosing a lower output resolution only if that suits the viewing use. Review the result for visible artifacts, especially in motion, fine detail, gradients, and dark scenes. If quality is not acceptable, raise the bitrate or retain a higher resolution. No single setting guarantees the same result across different ProRes sources.

Common problems and fixes

  • The file is not much smaller: The chosen bitrate may be high, or the source may be short or already relatively compact for its content. Revisit the bitrate or quality target and compare the output size with the image quality you need.
  • The picture looks soft or blocky: The bitrate may be too low for the resolution, frame rate, or visual complexity. Increase it and export another version for review.
  • The exported frame rate differs from the source: Check the encoder’s frame-rate setting and use the recorded rate unless you intended to change it.
  • Color or brightness looks wrong: Recheck whether the source is SDR or HDR and the color handling in the export. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR; HDR needs its separate workflow.
  • Sound is missing or the wrong language plays: Revisit the source’s audio tracks and the export’s track selection, then check playback of the finished file.
  • The export will not play or upload as expected: Confirm that the file is MP4, the video is H.264, and the audio uses a compatible format. Re-export if a setting or track was misconfigured.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Before uploading, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the footage, music, and other material in the video. Converting a file does not change its copyright status. A smaller MP4 also does not guarantee that YouTube will accept or recommend a video; follow YouTube’s current upload guidance and applicable policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

Converting a file and keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 are separate jobs. If your goal is a continuous stream from uploaded videos, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
