To make a ProRes master smaller for YouTube, export a separate MP4 using H.264, keep the original resolution and frame rate unless you have a reason to change them, and use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations as a starting point. Test a short, representative section before exporting the whole video: there is no universal compression ratio that guarantees a particular file size or picture quality.
This guide is about preparing an uploaded video. YouTube Live uses separate stream-ingestion settings.
Choose an H.264 export that suits the footage
YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264, progressive scan, High Profile, variable bitrate, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling for uploads. It says no bitrate limit is required and presents its bitrate figures as recommendations, not mandatory limits. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Keep the ProRes file as your archive or master, and create a separate delivery copy. That preserves a high-quality source if you need a different export later. YouTube also accepts ProRes among its supported file formats; acceptance does not mean a ProRes upload will be small. See YouTube’s supported file formats.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set bitrate by resolution and frame rate
For SDR uploads, YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these reference bitrates. Match the row to the export’s resolution and frame-rate class. The figures are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of file size or visual quality.
| Resolution | Standard frame rate | High frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 8 Mbps (24, 25, or 30 fps) | 12 Mbps (48, 50, or 60 fps) |
| 1440p | 16 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p / 4K | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
Lower bitrate usually means less encoded data, but the resulting file size and visible quality depend on the footage and encoder. Fast motion, fine texture, and gradients can reveal compression problems. If the reference rate produces a file that is still too large, lower it in measured steps and compare samples rather than assuming a particular percentage reduction.

Keep the recording’s cadence and dimensions where possible
YouTube advises encoding and uploading at the same frame rate as the recording. Avoid changing frame rate just to shrink a file; reducing bitrate is the more direct size control. Keep the source resolution when retaining detail matters. Downscaling can reduce output data, but it also discards spatial detail, so do it only when the smaller dimensions are an acceptable trade-off.
Convert the file in your editor or encoder
- Protect the original. Keep the ProRes master and export a new delivery file rather than overwriting it.
- Choose the format. Select MP4 as the container and H.264 as the video codec. Use progressive output, High Profile if available, and variable bitrate.
- Match the source. Retain the source resolution and frame rate unless a delivery requirement calls for a change.
- Set an SDR target. For an SDR project, use BT.709 color tagging and choose the bitrate reference for the intended resolution and frame-rate class from the table above.
- Set audio deliberately. YouTube lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz. AAC-LC is a practical choice for a conventional stereo export; confirm channel configuration if your source audio is multichannel.
- Export a short test. Choose a section with motion, fine detail, gradients, and typical audio. Check playback, color, sound, and whether you see blocking or smearing.
- Adjust and export. If the test is too large, lower bitrate in measured steps and compare. If quality falls below what you can accept, raise it or reconsider whether a resolution change is appropriate.
- Upload and review. Let YouTube finish processing before judging playback quality. Its upload recommendations do not promise a particular transcoded result.
Apple’s Compressor User Guide documents H.264 controls and the quality-to-file-size trade-off for that Mac application. Other editors or encoders can serve the same purpose if they offer H.264 export and bitrate control; a paid application is not inherently required.

Do not use an SDR H.264 preset blindly for HDR
HDR requires the correct metadata and color handling, not just a higher bitrate. YouTube’s HDR upload guidance calls for appropriate transfer function, primaries, and matrix metadata, including Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix with PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. It recommends VP9 Profile 2, AV1, or HEVC/H.265 for HDR and notes that ProRes and H.264 10-bit may require very high bitrates. If preserving HDR matters, confirm that your editor’s export path maintains the intended HDR metadata and bit depth before choosing an ordinary 8-bit H.264 preset.
