Best CRF Value in HandBrake for Pre-Recorded YouTube Streaming Videos

For typical 1080p x264, RF 22 is a practical HandBrake starting point—not a universal answer or a YouTube-prescribed CRF. Learn how to test and adjust it.

For a typical 1080p H.264/x264 video, start at HandBrake RF 22, encode a short representative section, and inspect it before processing the whole file. Lower RF usually preserves more detail but creates a larger file; higher RF makes a smaller file with more visible compression. There is no single best value for every source, and YouTube does not prescribe a HandBrake RF/CRF number.

What RF value should you start with?

HandBrake calls its constant-quality control RF (Rate Factor); CRF is common terminology for the constant-rate-factor control in x264. For x264 and x265, HandBrake documents resolution-specific ranges:

Output resolution HandBrake RF range
480p/576p 18–22
720p 19–23
1080p 20–24
2160p (4K) 22–28

For ordinary 1080p material encoded with x264, RF 22 is a practical starting point within HandBrake’s documented range. These values are guidance, not guarantees: the source, motion, fine detail, grain, encoder, and your tolerance for larger files all affect the result. HandBrake’s quality-adjustment documentation explains its scale and ranges.

How constant quality changes the file

In constant-quality mode, you choose a target quality level and the encoder varies the bitrate as needed. RF is not a target bitrate or a promise of a particular file size. A lower RF means higher quality and generally a larger output; a higher RF means more compression and generally a smaller output. The numerical scale is logarithmic, so even a small RF change can make a meaningful difference. HandBrake describes this mode in its quality and bitrate guidance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That makes RF useful when visual consistency matters more than a fixed file size. If you must hit a size or bitrate target, constant quality may not give you predictable results; compare an average-bitrate workflow instead.

Choose an RF without wasting a full encode

  1. Select the encoder. Choose H.264 (x264) if you want to apply the x264 RF guidance below. RF recommendations are encoder-specific; do not assume the same number produces equivalent results with another encoder.
  2. Start within the range for your output resolution. For a typical 1080p x264 video, begin at RF 22. For 4K, use HandBrake’s 22–28 range rather than treating the 1080p starting point as a direct equivalent. Use the listed range for SD or 720p as well.
  3. Encode a representative section. Use HandBrake’s Preview feature or encode a short portion that includes the kinds of shots found throughout the video—such as motion, texture, gradients, and darker scenes. A static or unusually clean section may not reveal the difficult parts.
  4. Inspect the result at normal viewing size. Look for lost texture, smearing during motion, banding in gradients, or blockiness. If those losses are unacceptable and a larger file is fine, try RF 20 or 21 for 1080p. If the output looks good and reducing size matters more, try RF 23 or 24. These are practical adjustments within HandBrake’s 1080p range, not tested outcomes or guaranteed thresholds.
  5. Keep the comparison controlled. When comparing RF choices, keep the source, resolution, encoder, and other encoding settings the same. Compare the image and resulting file size; encoding time can also differ with settings and hardware.

HandBrake’s general x264 guidance is approximately RF 22 ±1 for HD and RF 20 ±1 for SD. Its constant-quality versus average-bitrate documentation also recommends trying a sample when the general starting point does not suit the source.

Use a Creator preset if you do not want to choose RF manually

HandBrake’s Creator presets are intended for uploads to hosting platforms, including YouTube, and generally aim for higher video and audio quality to reduce generational loss from re-encoding. They can be a convenient starting path if you would rather not tune RF yourself. Preset names and exact settings may differ by HandBrake version, so check the presets available in your installed version. See HandBrake’s official preset documentation.

RF is not YouTube’s upload bitrate recommendation

YouTube’s upload guidance specifies recommended bitrate by resolution and frame-rate class; it does not prescribe a HandBrake CRF/RF value. For SDR 1080p uploads, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps at standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). For SDR 2160p, its recommendations are 35–45 Mbps at standard frame rates and 53–68 Mbps at high frame rates. These are YouTube bitrate recommendations, not settings to enter as RF in HandBrake. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

The same YouTube guidance calls for MP4, H.264 High Profile, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, CABAC, two consecutive B frames, a closed GOP, and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa audio. It recommends matching the source frame rate, deinterlacing interlaced footage before upload, and using BT.709 for SDR. An RF choice controls constant quality; it does not by itself ensure that every container, video, and audio requirement is met.

When the encoded video is meant to run as a YouTube live stream

If “pre-recorded YouTube streaming” means playing a prepared video as a live broadcast, the HandBrake RF choice governs the uploaded video file’s compression—not whether the broadcast stays live. Check your encoded file before uploading it to the streaming workflow, and make sure you have the rights to the video and audio. YouTube’s upload encoding guidance is for video uploads; it is not an RF setting for a live stream.
