To convert a MOV to MP4, first check what the file contains. On a Mac, Apple’s extension-change shortcut applies only when the video codec is H.264; otherwise, export a new copy with iMovie or use a conversion workflow suited to the file. For command-line users, FFmpeg can either remux compatible streams without re-encoding or re-encode them for broader compatibility or a different size or resolution.
What changes when you convert MOV to MP4?
MOV and MP4 are container formats: they package video, audio, and other tracks or metadata. They are related formats, but changing a filename from .mov to .mp4 does not change the encoded streams inside the file. Apple’s QuickTime File Format documentation describes the QuickTime container and its distinction from MPEG-4 (Apple Developer Documentation); FFmpeg documents MOV and MP4 as related muxer formats in the QuickTime/MOV family and their relationship to ISO BMFF (FFmpeg Formats Documentation).
The right method depends on your goal. If the target app accepts the existing video and audio codecs, putting those streams in an MP4 container may be enough. If it rejects a codec, or you want different dimensions or a smaller file, you need an export or re-encode. A remux generally avoids another lossy encoding step; re-encoding can improve compatibility or change output properties, but takes processing time and can reduce quality.
Convert a MOV to MP4 on a Mac
Option 1: Change the extension only for an H.264 MOV
Apple documents an extension-change shortcut for MOV files that use H.264. It preserves the video streams and dimensions; it is not a codec conversion, and Apple says the resolution and file size remain the same. Keep the original file before trying it.

- In Finder, locate the MOV file. If you need to preserve the source, duplicate it first.
- Select the file and choose File > Get Info. Check the video codec and confirm that it is H.264.
- Rename the duplicate so its extension is
.mp4. Confirm the extension change if macOS asks. - Open the resulting file in the app or upload it to the website where you need to use it. If it is rejected, or if you need a different resolution or file size, use an export workflow instead.
Apple’s instructions are for this H.264 case, not for arbitrary MOV files. See Apple Support’s MOV-to-MP4 instructions.
Option 2: Export a new copy with iMovie
Use iMovie when the MOV uses a codec other than H.264, the renamed copy is not accepted, or you need to change the output. This creates a new movie rather than merely renaming the source.

- Choose the app’s share or export command. The exact controls and options can vary with your installed iMovie version.
- Choose an MP4-compatible export option if one is offered, then save the exported copy.
- Play the saved file and test it in the intended website or app. Keep the original until playback and upload both succeed.
Apple points Mac users to iMovie for MOV conversion. Do not use QuickTime Player’s video export as an MP4 converter: Apple’s current guide states, “QuickTime Player doesn’t export movies as MP4 videos.” See Apple’s QuickTime Player export guide. Apple’s developer documentation describes export as creating a new movie using a selected preset and file type (Exporting video to alternative formats).
Convert with FFmpeg: remux or re-encode
FFmpeg is a command-line option for users comfortable working in a terminal. Before converting, inspect the input and identify the video and audio streams. A MOV can contain tracks or codecs the target app does not support, so no single stream-copy command is guaranteed to work for every file. Keep the source and test the output in its intended destination.

Remux compatible streams without re-encoding
Remuxing copies encoded streams into a different container. It is useful when the existing streams are compatible with MP4 and the target application; it does not fix an unsupported codec.
- Open a terminal and change to the directory containing the MOV, or use full paths in the command.
- Run
ffmpeg -i input.mov -c copy output.mp4, replacing the filenames with your actual paths. - Check FFmpeg’s output for errors, then play
output.mp4and test it in the target app or website.
The -c copy option copies streams rather than encoding them again. If FFmpeg reports that a stream cannot be written to MP4, or the destination still rejects the file, inspect the track and codec details and consider re-encoding the incompatible stream. Do not assume that changing the container makes every track acceptable.

Re-encode when compatibility or output dimensions require it
Re-encoding creates new encoded streams. It may be necessary for a target that does not support the input codec, or when you need a different resolution or file size. It takes longer than copying streams and may reduce quality. Select settings based on the destination’s requirements; there is no single preset guaranteed to suit every app or website.
For example, an H.264 video and AAC audio output can be requested with:

This example re-encodes the video and audio. It does not specify a target resolution or bitrate; add output settings only when you know what the destination accepts and what trade-off you want. Verify the result by playing it and testing the upload or import.

| Rename H.264 MOV extension | Filename extension only; streams, resolution, and file size stay the same. | A Mac user whose MOV uses H.264 and whose target accepts the file under an MP4 extension. | Does not convert codecs or change dimensions or size; not a general solution for all MOV files. |
| iMovie export | Creates a new exported movie. | A Mac user who needs a converted copy or whose renamed file is rejected. | Available controls and options can vary by installed iMovie version; verify the exported file. |
FFmpeg remux (-c copy) |
Changes the container while copying encoded streams. | A command-line user whose streams are compatible with MP4 and the destination. | Cannot make an unsupported codec or track compatible by itself. |
| FFmpeg re-encode | Creates new encoded streams, and can use output settings for a different size or resolution. | A command-line user needing broader compatibility or changed output properties. | Takes processing time and may reduce quality; settings must suit the destination. |
Check the result and troubleshoot failures
- The renamed file is still rejected: Renaming does not change its streams. Confirm the codec and use iMovie or re-encode with settings the destination supports.
- The MOV is not H.264: Skip Apple’s extension shortcut and create an exported copy instead.
- FFmpeg reports a stream or muxing error: The stream may not be suitable for the chosen MP4 container. Inspect the input tracks, then re-encode an incompatible stream rather than relying on stream copy.
- The file plays but will not upload or import: The destination may have different codec or file requirements. Check its requirements, choose a compatible export, and test the new file there.
- You need a smaller file or different dimensions: Renaming cannot accomplish this. Export or re-encode with an appropriate resolution and encoding settings.
- The converted output has playback problems: Compare it with the original, check that the needed audio and video tracks were included, and try a fresh export. Do not delete the source until the output works where you need it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the reason for converting a recording is to keep a YouTube channel live with pre-recorded video, file conversion and 24/7 streaming are separate tasks. StreamNeo plays videos you upload; it does not stream from a camera. Its three-step setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
