Convert the MOV into a new MP4 file—typically with H.264 video and AAC audio—then configure a separate live encoder to send the stream to YouTube. Converting the file does not make it loop or keep a broadcast online by itself; continuous playback and recovery depend on the streaming method you choose.
Know what you are converting
A MOV is a container, not a single video format: it can hold different video and audio codecs. YouTube’s upload recommendations specify MP4 with H.264 video and supported audio such as AAC-LC. Use a real conversion when needed; changing a filename from .mov to .mp4 does not convert the media inside it. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
There are two separate jobs in this workflow. First, prepare a compatible video file. Second, configure an encoder or cloud service to send a live feed to YouTube. The upload file’s bitrate and encoding are not automatically the correct settings for live ingestion.
Convert the MOV to an MP4
- Inspect the source. Check its dimensions, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and orientation/aspect ratio. Keep the recorded frame rate unless you have a specific reason to change it. YouTube recommends preserving the source frame rate.
- Choose the output settings. In a converter that supports your particular MOV, select MP4 as the container, H.264 for video, and AAC audio as a straightforward target. YouTube’s upload guide also recommends 48 kHz audio and provides resolution-specific encoding guidance; consult the current page for your output resolution and frame rate.
- Save a separate file. Keep the original MOV until you have checked the conversion. If the converter re-encodes video, the result is not lossless; quality can change depending on the source and output settings.
- Inspect and play the MP4. Confirm that it opens, has the expected picture orientation and duration, and includes audible sound if the source has audio. Check the beginning and end for unintended blank sections or cut-off content.
Supported MOV variants and the right settings vary by converter and source file. No particular conversion app or command is guaranteed for every MOV.

Configure YouTube Live separately
For RTMP or RTMPS live ingestion, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Its live encoder recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. These are live-feed settings, separate from the MP4 upload recommendations. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains where to get the stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the URL and key in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Set the encoder’s live output. Choose an ingestion-compatible video and audio codec, CBR where available, and a two-second keyframe interval. Select a live bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current recommendations and a connection that can sustain it. There is no single bitrate that fits every resolution and frame rate.
- Connect and preflight. Start the encoder output, then check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast. Test picture, movement, audio, and stream health. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover testing and monitoring.
What it takes to keep the stream running continuously
A converted MP4 is only the media source. A 24/7 broadcast also needs a streaming method that plays the file continuously and handles interruptions. The YouTube setup guidance explains connection and preflight, but it does not establish how a particular encoder loops a file indefinitely, restarts after a failure, or recovers from a network drop. Verify those behaviors in the current documentation for the encoder you choose, and test them before relying on an unattended stream.

Do not assume one uninterrupted broadcast will produce a complete archive of any length. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that condition does not promise an archive of a longer continuous stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Test safely and troubleshoot
Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate, and review the preview before going public. For a documentary channel, confirm that you have the rights to the video, music, and other material you broadcast. A technically successful conversion does not grant streaming rights or guarantee compliance with YouTube policies.

- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder has the current stream URL and key, that the key was copied correctly, and that the encoder is connected. YouTube’s live streaming error messages page can help identify reported issues.
- The picture stutters or the stream health is poor: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the configured live bitrate. Use YouTube’s resolution- and frame-rate-specific live recommendations rather than the source file’s bitrate.
- The video looks wrong or has no sound: Play the converted MP4 locally, verify its orientation and audio, and check the encoder’s selected video and audio inputs and codecs.
- The broadcast stops instead of looping or recovering: Check the encoder’s documented loop and restart options. Conversion alone does not provide either behavior.
