How to Convert HEVC Videos to H.264 for an OBS YouTube Playlist

A careful HandBrake workflow for converting HEVC recordings to H.264 MP4, checking settings, queueing a batch, and preparing the files for a YouTube playlist.

Use HandBrake to re-encode each HEVC recording as an H.264 video in an MP4 container, then upload the converted files to YouTube and add them to a playlist. Changing a filename or remuxing a file does not change its video codec. Keep the originals, test one conversion, and check the result before processing the rest.

Why convert HEVC to H.264?

HEVC (also called H.265) and H.264 are different video codecs. YouTube’s standard upload recommendations specify MP4 with H.264 video, so converting an HEVC recording means decoding and re-encoding its video—not merely changing its extension or moving the video stream into another container. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

OBS can record in different containers and codecs. Its format guide notes that MKV is the default and can be remuxed into a more compatible container, but remuxing changes the container, not the codec. A remuxed HEVC video is still HEVC. See the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.

Converting can improve compatibility with the recommended upload format, but it takes time and is lossy: a new encode may reduce image quality. HEVC is generally more bitrate-efficient than H.264, so an H.264 file at comparable visual quality may be larger than its HEVC original.

Convert a recording with HandBrake

1. Preserve the source and organize the outputs

  1. Keep an untouched copy of each HEVC original. Create a separate output folder for the H.264 files.
  2. Use filenames that preserve episode numbers or playlist order, such as 01-introduction and 02-interview.
  3. Install HandBrake from its official project site.

2. Choose a Creator preset and inspect the video settings

  1. Open a source recording in HandBrake.
  2. Choose a Creator preset that matches the source’s resolution and frame-rate class. The documented options include Creator 720p60, 1080p60, 1440p60, and 2160p60. The Creator preset family is intended for video-hosting uploads; these presets use MP4, H.264, and AAC stereo. See HandBrake’s official presets.
  3. Open the Video tab and confirm the video encoder is H.264. Preserve the source dimensions and frame rate unless you have a specific reason to change them. YouTube advises: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”
  4. Check cropping, scaling, and filters. Make sure cropping has not removed visible content and scaling has not changed the resolution unexpectedly.

3. Check audio, subtitles, and output naming

  1. In Audio, select the intended language and track, then confirm the output will have sound. HandBrake can either re-encode audio or pass through supported source formats. AAC is a straightforward choice for broad MP4 compatibility; YouTube lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio among its supported upload audio codecs.
  2. Inspect Subtitles and select the tracks you actually want included. Do not assume every source track or language will automatically be carried into the output.
  3. Choose a destination folder and a unique filename for the output. Check the automatic naming before queuing jobs so separate recordings cannot overwrite one another.

4. Test one file, then queue the batch

  1. Convert a representative recording first. Play the output and check its duration, resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, picture, audio, and any required subtitles.
  2. If the sample is correct, add the remaining sources as separate jobs. HandBrake’s queue documentation explains how to add jobs and start the queue.
  3. After the queue finishes, spot-check the outputs before uploading the full set. Keep the originals until you have confirmed the converted files work as intended.

Batch conversion with HandBrakeCLI

HandBrakeCLI is an alternative when you need a repeatable command-line workflow. HandBrake documents an x264 encoder, but the exact command depends on your installed version, source track layout, output paths, and color properties. Avoid copying a generic command without checking it against your version and a sample file.

  • Test one input and inspect both the command output or log and the resulting file.
  • Use a distinct output path and filename for every input.
  • Confirm the output video is encoded as H.264. Stream-copying the video would leave it HEVC.
  • Check the audio track and color characteristics rather than assuming defaults suit every source.

For batch work, automate only after the sample conversion has passed your checks. HandBrake’s feature overview describes supported encoders, passthrough, and queueing.

Choose settings without changing more than necessary

  • Resolution and frame rate: Retain the source dimensions and recorded frame rate where possible. Avoid unnecessary resizing or frame-rate conversion; YouTube recommends matching the upload frame rate to the recording.
  • Video encoding: Use H.264 for the video stream and MP4 as the container when following YouTube’s standard upload recommendation. A container change alone does not perform this conversion.
  • File size and processing time: H.264 may require a larger file than HEVC for similar visual quality. A slower software encode may take longer; available hardware encoding can shift work away from the CPU, but support and output characteristics depend on the hardware and driver. See the OBS guide to hardware encoding.
  • Audio: Re-encoding to AAC can simplify MP4 compatibility; passthrough can preserve supported source audio without re-encoding. Check which track is selected and whether the output plays correctly. HandBrake explains its options in Audio Codecs.
  • HDR or 10-bit sources: Do not apply SDR assumptions blindly. Color handling needs a deliberate choice, and the available documentation does not establish one universal HDR-to-H.264 recipe. YouTube’s guidance about H.265 for HDR concerns live-stream encoding, a different workflow from converting prerecorded uploads: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Upload the files and make the YouTube playlist

Once the converted files have passed your checks, upload them to YouTube and confirm they finish processing. Then create a playlist or add the videos to an existing one using YouTube’s playlist controls. Conversion and playlist management are separate tasks: the conversion prepares compatible files; the playlist organizes videos after upload.

If the recordings contain material you did not create, check that you have the rights needed to upload and use it. A technically valid H.264 file does not resolve copyright or monetization eligibility questions.

Troubleshooting

YouTube or another app still identifies the file as HEVC

Check HandBrake’s Video tab and the output’s codec information. The source may have been remuxed or copied rather than re-encoded. Run the job again with H.264 selected.

The picture is cropped, stretched, or softer than expected

Compare the output dimensions and aspect ratio with the source, then inspect crop, scaling, and filter settings. Re-run the conversion with unintended changes removed. Re-encoding can reduce quality, so retain the original as your reference.

The file is much larger or the queue is taking a long time

H.264 can produce larger files than HEVC at comparable visual quality, and software encoding takes processing time. Check that you selected the intended preset and output location; do not reduce resolution or frame rate unless that trade-off is acceptable for your material.

The output has no sound or the wrong language

Return to Audio, select the correct source track, and confirm a compatible output choice. Play the converted file before uploading; do not assume track selection or passthrough worked as intended.

HDR footage looks wrong after conversion

Stop the batch and inspect one source and output before proceeding. HDR and 10-bit material needs color-aware handling; the ordinary SDR workflow is not a universal conversion recipe.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7, conversion is only one part of the workflow. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos on a YouTube channel from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is not a camera-streaming service.
