Conversion prepares the video; a separate encoder or cloud service sends it to YouTube Live. To keep it playing continuously, configure a loop or playlist and test the entire stream before relying on it.
What conversion does—and what it does not do
AVI and WMV describe container formats or file families, not one guaranteed combination of video and audio codecs. Two files with the same extension can therefore need different handling. Changing .avi to .mp4 does not convert the media inside.
File conversion prepares content for playback. Live encoding is a separate job: streaming software encodes and sends a live feed to YouTube, which ingests the feed rather than simply replaying a file you have uploaded to your channel. A 24/7 setup also needs a looping source and a host, connection, and power arrangement that can keep running.
Inspect the files before converting
Use a media inspector such as FFmpeg’s ffprobe to check each file’s video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, duration, rotation, and whether it contains audio. This helps you choose settings that suit the actual source instead of applying one command blindly. A particular FFmpeg build or system decoder may not support every legacy codec variant, so test the files you have.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
FFmpeg’s basic conversion example is:
ffmpeg -i input.avi output.mp4
This is a starting example, not a quality guarantee or an instruction to transcode every file. The output container and codecs depend on the chosen output options and the source. A broadly compatible target to consider is MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, but inspect the source and test the result against your playback setup.
Choose between stream copy and transcoding
Use stream copy when the existing codecs already suit playback
If the video and audio streams are already suitable and only the container needs changing, stream copy can put the existing streams into a different container without re-encoding. Check that the target container and playback software support those streams; changing the container alone cannot make an unsupported codec compatible.

Transcode when playback compatibility or consistency requires it
Transcoding decodes the source streams and encodes them again. FFmpeg notes that this takes more processing and, in most cases, reduces quality because it is lossy. Choose output codecs and quality settings after inspecting the source, and compare the result with the original—especially for old, low-resolution, or already compressed footage.
Make a continuous program
Loop one file in OBS
- Open OBS and add a Media Source to the scene.
- Select the video file and enable Loop in the source properties. OBS describes this option as playing the file again when playback completes.
- Preview the scene through the full playback chain. Check the restart point, picture, and audio before using it for a live stream.
OBS Media Sources documentation lists AVI among supported video types, but that does not establish support for every codec variant or guarantee every WMV file will play on every system. Test each actual file in your OBS installation. Source documentation: OBS Project, Media Sources.

Play a sequence of clips
For multiple recordings, use a playlist-capable source or prepare a combined program. Test transitions and the end-to-start seam: clips can differ in codecs, dimensions, frame rates, or audio properties. Do not assume that files can be joined directly just because they share an extension.
FFmpeg’s concat filter is intended for concatenation when re-encoding is needed. Its concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding when the formats permit it. Choose based on the files’ compatibility and test the resulting transitions. See the FFmpeg FAQ.

Configure the YouTube live encoder
In your streaming encoder, choose YouTube Live and use RTMPS where available for an encrypted RTMP connection. For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube says it will automatically detect the encoder settings you chose. Check its current guidance before configuring a production stream: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate; use the stable upload capacity of your connection as a constraint, not just the maximum speed advertised by your provider. For H.264, YouTube currently lists 1080p30 at 5 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended, and 720p30 at 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not universal settings for every codec, frame rate, or connection.

YouTube’s setup guide explains the encoder’s role in preparing a digital stream: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Check channel eligibility and run a preflight
Before planning a continuous broadcast, confirm live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days; age requirements also apply. See Get started with live streaming.
- Start an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream and confirm the encoder connects and YouTube shows a preview.
- Listen for audio, inspect picture and motion, and check any playlist transitions or loop restart.
- Check YouTube’s stream health messages before making the broadcast public. Monitor health during the event as well.
- If recording locally, verify that the archive is being written and remains usable.
For documentary material, confirm you have the necessary rights to stream the picture, soundtrack, and any other included material. A technically successful ingest does not establish that the content is authorized or that it complies with YouTube’s policies.
What a DIY 24/7 setup depends on
An OBS loop repeats the configured source; it does not by itself guarantee a resilient unattended broadcast. If you run the encoder locally, continuity depends on the computer staying powered and awake, OBS remaining active, the network connection staying up, and the media source continuing to play. Plan monitoring and a way to recover from interruptions. Test the actual setup over a meaningful period before treating it as continuous.
