How to Convert AV1 to H.264 for OBS and YouTube on a Low-End PC

YouTube Live supports AV1, so converting to H.264 is not always necessary. Learn when conversion helps, how to choose stable OBS settings, and ways to reduce load on a low-end PC.

You usually do not need to convert an AV1 video to H.264 just to stream it on YouTube. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists AV1, H.265/HEVC, and H.264 as supported video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS streams. If your OBS setup accepts the file and your workflow works, keep AV1. Convert only when a part of your setup requires H.264 or you have chosen an H.264 streaming encoder.

On a low-end PC, separate preparing a file offline from encoding a live OBS stream: conversion can take substantial processing time, while real-time encoding must keep pace with playback. The right settings depend on your CPU, GPU, source video, OBS version, scene complexity, and upload connection.

Do you need to convert AV1 to H.264?

Not necessarily. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists AV1 as an accepted video codec alongside H.264 and H.265/HEVC for RTMP/RTMPS. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide also covers AV1 and H.264.

Keep the AV1 file if OBS and the rest of your playback and streaming workflow accept it. Convert when another player, editor, or workflow component requires H.264, or when you deliberately plan to encode the live output using H.264. H.264 remains a useful compatibility choice: OBS describes it as its default codec and broadly playable across devices and software.

Changing the file’s container alone does not convert its video codec. A real AV1-to-H.264 conversion decodes the AV1 video and encodes it again as H.264, which is lossy and consumes processing time.

Choose a workflow for your PC

When the goal is to play a recorded video in OBS

First test the AV1 file in the exact OBS setup you intend to use. If it plays correctly and the stream is stable, there is no codec-driven reason to convert it for YouTube. Test a representative section with the same scenes, audio, resolution, and frame rate you will use live.

When the workflow requires an H.264 file

  1. Keep the original. Conversion can reduce quality, so do not overwrite the AV1 source.
  2. Check your available encoders. Choose an H.264 encoder that is actually available on your PC. OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync Video as hardware encoding paths on compatible systems; availability depends on hardware, drivers, and the OBS encoder menu.
  3. Pick a sustainable output format. Match the output resolution and frame rate to what your computer and live stream can handle. A lower resolution or frame rate can reduce the workload, but may not suit every video or channel.
  4. Handle audio intentionally. Select whether to retain or re-encode the source audio rather than assuming a video conversion will preserve it as desired.
  5. Check the result before going live. Play the converted file from beginning to end, checking picture, synchronization, and audio. Then run an OBS test with representative content and inspect YouTube’s stream health and any status messages.

The cited OBS and YouTube guidance establishes supported codecs and performance considerations, but not a particular FFmpeg command or graphical transcoder configuration. Use the documentation for the specific converter you select rather than relying on an unverified command.

Set OBS and YouTube for a stable stream

YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. The H.264 bitrate examples below are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a PC or internet connection can sustain them.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

Choose an output your PC can encode and your connection can upload reliably. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams to create different output formats, but that does not remove the need for a stable incoming stream.

  1. In OBS, select a video output resolution and frame rate your PC can maintain. If 60 fps is not working, OBS recommends trying 30 fps.
  2. Set the output encoder to an available H.264 encoder if H.264 is your chosen stream codec. Hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, when compatible hardware is present.
  3. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and choose a bitrate appropriate to the output resolution and frame rate. Confirm that upload bandwidth is stable enough for that bitrate.
  4. Keep the base canvas unchanged unless resources are severely constrained. OBS notes that changing it can require repositioning sources.
  5. Test with representative motion and audio. Monitor YouTube stream health and read status messages before relying on the setup for a full live session.

Reduce OBS load if the PC struggles

“Low-end PC” is not a precise hardware specification. OBS says CPU demands vary considerably with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing output resolution, lowering frame rate, and simplifying scenes when performance is insufficient.

  • Lower output resolution: OBS says this reduces the GPU resources required.
  • Lower frame rate: Fewer frames reduce rendering and encoding work; try 30 fps if 60 fps is failing.
  • Simplify scenes: Remove or reduce sources and effects that are not needed for the stream.
  • Check GPU load: OBS recommends checking GPU usage as part of troubleshooting. If using hardware encoding, verify that the intended encoder is available and selected rather than assuming a GPU supports it.

OBS’s Hardware Encoding article says hardware encoders are generally recommended for performance because they move encoding work away from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. Its formats guide notes that real-time software AV1 encoding requires high-end CPUs. That is a warning about real-time AV1 encoding, not proof that every low-end PC must convert an AV1 file before streaming.

Troubleshooting common problems

OBS cannot play or use the AV1 file

Check whether the specific OBS build and playback component in your workflow accept the file. If not, convert to H.264 using an encoder available on your system, then test the converted file before going live. YouTube’s codec support does not guarantee that every local player or OBS workflow can read every file.

The stream stutters or OBS cannot keep up

Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, and check GPU load. Test again with representative content. If the PC remains unable to maintain the chosen output, select a lower sustainable setting rather than assuming a higher bitrate or a codec change will fix rendering or encoding overload.

YouTube reports a stream issue

Check the selected bitrate against YouTube’s recommendation for your resolution and frame rate, confirm CBR and the keyframe interval, and verify that the internet connection can sustain the upload. Review YouTube’s stream health and messages during a test.

The converted file looks or sounds wrong

Recheck the conversion’s video encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and audio handling. Since re-encoding is lossy, compare the output with the original and retain the source so you can try different settings if needed.

Or let it run in the cloud
