How to Control an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Remotely on a Headless Raspberry Pi

Use SSH to manage FFmpeg running on a headless Raspberry Pi. Configure YouTube ingest securely, check the Live Control Room preview, and plan for process persistence and recovery.

Run FFmpeg on the Raspberry Pi, then use SSH from another device to start, inspect and stop the stream. The Pi needs a network connection and SSH configured before it can be operated headlessly. YouTube supplies the stream URL and key; FFmpeg sends the video to YouTube, while SSH is simply the remote way to manage FFmpeg on the Pi. This is a command-line workflow, not a built-in FFmpeg remote dashboard.

What you need before you start

  • A Raspberry Pi with a compatible FFmpeg build and the video file or input you intend to stream.
  • Network access for the Pi, via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and a remote access method configured before it is left headless. Raspberry Pi recommends preparing headless access with Raspberry Pi Imager. See Raspberry Pi remote access documentation.
  • An SSH client on the computer or device you will use to operate the Pi.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

The title does not specify a Pi model, operating-system version, source format, resolution, frame rate or encoding method, so there is no reliable model-specific performance guarantee. The workload and FFmpeg build determine whether the Pi can encode and send the intended stream reliably.

Prepare the Pi and verify FFmpeg

Configure headless network access

Use Raspberry Pi Imager to set up the operating system and network access, and enable SSH. Confirm the Pi can connect to your network, then identify its hostname or IP address so your SSH client can reach it. If SSH is not enabled or the Pi cannot join the network, remote control will not work once you disconnect a display and keyboard.

Check the installed FFmpeg build

Connect to the Pi over SSH and check that FFmpeg is installed and that the particular build supports the output protocol you intend to use. FFmpeg’s command-line reference documents its invocation and options at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html; protocol support can differ between packaged builds, so do not assume an unspecified installation has every protocol enabled.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard encoder streaming. RTMPS is RTMP carried over a secure SSL connection, but use it only if YouTube’s selected ingest endpoint and the Pi’s FFmpeg build support it. YouTube also documents HLS ingest for supported cases, including HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. That does not establish that HLS is the right choice for a particular Raspberry Pi or FFmpeg configuration. Check YouTube’s current encoder setup and ingest guidance at YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
  2. Create a live stream or select the scheduled stream you plan to use.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the output configuration you will use with FFmpeg.

Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it out of public logs, shared screenshots and source files you publish. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room. See Manage live stream settings.

Start and control FFmpeg over SSH

Open an SSH session from your other device to the Pi, then run and manage FFmpeg there using the command and input appropriate to your setup. The exact command depends on whether the source is a file, another input, and whether encoding is needed; the necessary codecs, resolution, frame rate and bitrate are not specified here, so a universal command would risk being wrong for your stream.

For an interactive session, the SSH terminal is the control point for the FFmpeg process: use it to launch the process, review its output, and stop it when needed. If you close the session, do not assume the process will continue; persistence and recovery behavior depend on how the process is launched and on the Pi’s operating system. A persistent supervisor, restart policy or web control panel is a separate configuration choice, not a built-in feature of FFmpeg, and requires a setup appropriate to your OS and operating needs.

For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented sequence is to start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and then click Go live. Test before the event and check the preview rather than assuming that a running FFmpeg process means the YouTube broadcast is live.

Choose a remote access and ingest approach

SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect

SSH is a direct fit when you want command-line control of the FFmpeg process on the Pi. Raspberry Pi Connect is another remote-access option documented by Raspberry Pi. The available documentation confirms both options but does not establish a comparative performance or reliability advantage; choose based on whether you need a terminal workflow or access through Raspberry Pi’s service.

RTMPS or HLS

Use the ingest method supported by your YouTube stream configuration and your installed FFmpeg build. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended path for standard encoder streaming where supported. HLS is documented for particular supported cases, including HDR or codecs outside RTMP support. Do not infer that your Pi can handle a specific codec or HLS workload without checking the build and testing the intended configuration.

Test and troubleshoot before relying on the stream

YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. Check the Live Control Room preview and its stream-health indicators before and during the event. See YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
SSH cannot reach the Pi Network connection, hostname or IP, or SSH setup Confirm the Pi is online on the expected network and SSH was enabled during setup. Verify the address and credentials you are using.
FFmpeg rejects the output URL or protocol Mismatch between the URL, selected ingest method and local FFmpeg build Recheck the stream URL and confirm the installed build supports the protocol. Use the ingest option available for the selected YouTube stream.
YouTube shows no preview Encoder has not connected successfully, or stream URL/key configuration is wrong Check FFmpeg’s terminal output, confirm the URL and key, and verify that the encoder is sending to the selected stream. Do not click Go live until the expected preview appears.
Preview appears, but audio or video is wrong Source, codec, encoding or stream configuration Test the same source and settings before the event, then inspect the preview and YouTube stream-health information. Adjust the configuration to match the source and YouTube’s current ingest guidance.
Stream stops when the SSH session ends or after a failure Process lifetime and recovery configuration Determine how FFmpeg was launched and configure an OS-appropriate persistent process or supervisor if required. SSH itself does not provide automatic restart or a web dashboard.
Someone else may have the stream key Credential exposure Reset the key through Live Control Room using an owner or manager account, then update the protected FFmpeg configuration.

Keep the stream safe and eligible

  • Use only video, music and other material you have the rights to stream. A stream key does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted content.
  • Keep the key private and avoid exposing it in terminal captures or logs you share.
  • Check YouTube’s current live-streaming rules and channel status before scheduling an event; eligibility and policies can change.
  • Test the exact source and settings, and monitor stream health and audio/video quality rather than leaving a long-running stream unattended.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos playing without keeping a Raspberry Pi or another computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Each slot streams at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
