Yes—you can use Roku without a cable box. A Roku Streaming Stick or player connects to a TV through HDMI and streams over the internet; Roku TVs have the streaming platform built in. For internet-delivered shows and apps, you’ll generally need Wi-Fi or compatible wired internet. For local broadcast channels, a Roku TV can use an antenna instead.

First, identify which Roku you have

Device How it connects What to know
Roku TV Roku is built into the television. You do not need to buy a separate Roku player. The TV may also have HDMI inputs and an antenna input.
Roku Streaming Stick or player Connects to an HDMI port on an existing TV; it also needs power. The TV needs an available HDMI input. Ethernet is available only on some models or configurations.
Roku Streambar Connects to the TV through HDMI and also functions as a soundbar. It is an external Roku device, not a Roku TV.

“Roku” can mean the software in a television or a separate device. Setup and input switching differ. Roku’s TV requirements explain compatibility; an external player generally needs HDMI, and 4K or HDR may require compatible equipment and an HDCP 2.2-compatible connection.

What “without a cable box” means

  • No cable box: Roku streaming does not require a cable or satellite receiver.
  • No cable subscription: You can use free apps, paid streaming services, or an antenna instead, depending on what you want to watch.
  • No internet: App-based streaming generally will not work. A Roku TV can display antenna or HDMI sources without Wi-Fi after its initial setup, but an external Roku player is intended for internet streaming.
  • No monthly TV bill: Possible with free programming and an antenna, but you may still pay for internet, optional subscriptions, rentals, or purchases.
  • No coaxial cable: Streaming apps do not need one. An antenna uses a coaxial connection, and some cable-TV arrangements use coax.

Roku can replace the delivery method and equipment for some programming, but it does not automatically include every cable network, local station, sports package, premium service, or DVR feature. Some cable systems may deliver channels through a TV tuner; others require a provider box. Check with your provider before disconnecting equipment.

What you need

For a Roku Streaming Stick or player

  • The Roku device and its power cable or adapter.
  • A TV with an available HDMI port.
  • The supplied HDMI cable if your player uses one; some Stick installations may need an HDMI extender.
  • The Roku remote and batteries, or a charged rechargeable remote.
  • A home Wi-Fi network and password, unless your model and setup support wired Ethernet.
  • A Roku account for activation, plus separate accounts or subscriptions for services that require them.

For a Roku TV

  • The TV, remote, and a power outlet.
  • Your Wi-Fi network name and password for initial setup and streaming.
  • Optional: an HDTV antenna for local over-the-air channels, or HDMI devices such as a console or Blu-ray player.

Roku’s setup guide covers connecting an external player, power, network setup, updates, and activation. Its Roku TV setup guide covers the built-in platform.

Connect and set up an external Roku player

  1. Connect HDMI. Plug the Streaming Stick into an open HDMI port, or connect a player to the TV with its HDMI cable. Note the port label, such as HDMI 1.
  2. Connect power. Use the supplied power cable or adapter and connect the device to power.
  3. Select the TV input. Turn on the TV, press its Input, Source, or equivalent button, and choose the HDMI port used by Roku. The Roku startup screen should appear.
  4. Prepare the remote. Insert batteries in the correct direction. For a voice remote, follow the on-screen pairing prompts. If it does not respond, remove the batteries, wait several seconds, and reinstall them.
  5. Choose a language and connect to the internet. Select Wireless, choose your Wi-Fi network, enter its password, and select Connect. Ethernet is an option only for supported models or configurations.
  6. Install updates. Let Roku check for and install software updates; keep the device powered during the process.
  7. Activate the device. Sign in to an existing Roku account or create one, then follow the on-screen instructions to link the player.
  8. Open streaming apps. Install an app if needed, then sign in using that service’s credentials. A service may ask for a direct subscription login or credentials from a participating TV provider.

A Roku account is free. Charges may apply if you choose paid subscriptions, rentals, purchases, or other paid services. You do not need to pay a third party for Roku activation.

Set up a Roku TV

  1. Plug in and turn on the TV; prepare or pair the remote as prompted.
  2. Select the language and location, then connect the TV to Wi-Fi.
  3. Allow the TV to check for and install software updates.
  4. Sign in to or create a Roku account and complete activation.
  5. Open the apps you want, install them if needed, and sign in to each service.
  6. Optionally connect an antenna or other HDMI devices.

Roku says internet is required to complete initial setup on Roku-branded TVs. After setup, a Roku TV can still display HDMI content or antenna Live TV without Wi-Fi. Some Roku TV systems may offer a “connect later” or unlinked mode, but it is not universal; Roku’s unlinked-mode information says Roku streaming services and the Streaming Store are unavailable in that mode.

To add or rename connected devices, the menu may be Settings > Remotes & Devices > Add Devices; labels can vary by TV manufacturer and Roku OS version.

Ways to watch without a cable box

Streaming apps

Use apps for on-demand shows, movies, news, and other programming. Some are free and ad-supported; others require subscriptions. Roku does not make a paid service free just because its app is available on the platform. If you subscribe directly to a service, use that service’s login; if you access it through a participating cable provider, use the provider credentials when requested. See Roku’s app sign-in guidance.

Free Roku programming

The Roku Channel offers free ad-supported on-demand content and live channels. Roku’s U.S. live-TV page advertised 500+ free live channels when checked for this article; its catalog and count can change by date, country, and channel. Free programming is not a full cable lineup and may not include the particular local station, network, or sports coverage you want. Check Roku’s live-TV page for current offerings.

Local broadcast channels with an antenna

An antenna can receive available over-the-air broadcasts, including local news and network programming, without a cable-TV subscription. It does not provide every national cable network, premium channel, or sports package. Reception and channel availability depend on location, local transmitters, antenna placement, obstructions, and signal conditions.

  1. Connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to the TV’s Ant/Cable In or Live TV input.
  2. Power the antenna or amplifier if its instructions require it.
  3. Press Home, select Live TV, and follow the prompts to scan for channels.
  4. If Live TV is not listed, try Settings > TV inputs > Live TV > Set up input.
  5. Rescan after moving the antenna.

Roku’s antenna and Live TV guide recommends trying a higher position or a location near a window. An amplifier may need power, but in areas close to transmitters it can sometimes overload the tuner.

Paid live-TV streaming services

These services deliver channel bundles through an app rather than a physical cable box. Before subscribing, check the exact plan and your location for local ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC affiliates; sports and regional sports networks; news channels; cloud DVR rules; simultaneous streams; taxes; promotions; supported Roku models; and cancellation terms. Also confirm whether billing is handled by the service or through Roku. Availability varies, so no one service is best for every viewer.

Choose the setup that fits your viewing

Option Monthly TV cost Internet required Local channels Cable-style lineup
Free Roku apps and The Roku Channel No charge for free content; paid apps may charge Yes for streaming Limited; offerings vary No
Antenna on a Roku TV Usually no recurring TV fee; antenna is optional hardware Not for antenna reception after TV setup Available broadcasts depend on location and reception No
Live-TV streaming app Recurring service fee; varies by plan and market Yes Depends on provider and location More closely, but channel bundles differ
Cable box Depends on provider and package Not necessarily for television service Depends on provider Often, depending on package
  • Choose app-only streaming if you mainly watch on-demand content and have reliable internet.
  • Add an antenna if you want available local broadcasts and accept reception limits.
  • Consider live-TV streaming if you want a channel bundle and accept a recurring bill and possible regional restrictions.
  • Keep provider equipment if your cable package, DVR, pay-per-view, premium channels, or provider’s requirements depend on it.

If you already own a Roku TV, you do not need another Roku device. If you are buying a player, start with HDMI compatibility and the resolution of your TV; 4K/HDR equipment offers little benefit on a 1080p set. Roku’s player comparison describes its streaming devices as an internet-based alternative to cable or satellite boxes.

Switch between Roku, antenna, and other devices

On a Roku TV, press Home to return to Roku. Choose Live TV for antenna content or select the relevant HDMI input for a console, Blu-ray player, cable box, or other device. On a separate Streaming Stick or player, use the television’s remote to change HDMI inputs; the Roku remote controls Roku and may not control other connected equipment. Some Roku voice remotes also control basic TV power and volume, but capabilities vary. A cable box connected by HDMI generally still needs its own provider remote.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

The TV says “No Signal” or shows a blank screen

  1. Check that the selected TV input matches the HDMI port used by Roku.
  2. Reseat the Roku and HDMI connections; try another HDMI port.
  3. If the player uses a separate cable, try the supplied cable or a known-good replacement.
  4. Confirm the Roku is receiving power, then restart the TV and Roku.
  5. For a 4K/HDR setup, check that the TV port and connected equipment support the required HDCP specification.

Roku will not connect to Wi-Fi

  • Check the network name and password, then test the network with another device.
  • Move the Roku or router if the signal is weak; restart both.
  • Roku’s setup guidance recommends unplugging the router and Roku for about 10 seconds, then reconnecting them.
  • Use Ethernet only if your Roku model supports it. A phone hotspot may work as a temporary fallback, but cellular strength, data limits, streaming quality, and carrier terms matter.

The remote does not respond

Check battery orientation and charge, then remove and reinstall standard remote batteries after waiting several seconds. Follow on-screen pairing steps for voice remotes. If the remote operates Roku but not a connected cable box or other HDMI device, use that device’s remote; Roku remote capabilities differ by model.

The antenna scan finds no channels

  • Check that the coaxial connection is secure and any required antenna amplifier is powered.
  • Run the scan again, then try moving the antenna higher or near a window.
  • Reception may be blocked by terrain, building materials, or interference.
  • If you are close to broadcast towers and use an amplifier, try scanning without it; an overly strong signal can sometimes overload the tuner.

An app, channel, or show is missing

It may require a subscription or provider login, be unavailable in your country, have been removed or renamed, or be absent from your live-TV service’s local or regional lineup. Check the app or service’s official availability and channel list rather than assuming every Roku includes every channel.

Common questions

Can I use Roku without cable internet?

Yes, if you have another working internet connection for streaming, such as a compatible home broadband service. Roku does not require a cable-TV subscription or cable-company box. A phone hotspot may be a temporary option, subject to data limits and signal quality.

Can I use Roku without Wi-Fi?

An external Roku player is not a practical offline streaming device. A Roku TV can display antenna or HDMI sources without Wi-Fi after initial setup; Roku streaming apps require internet access.

Can I use Roku with an old TV?

An external Roku player generally works with a TV that has an available HDMI input. A TV without HDMI is not supported by the standard connection described here.

No. An antenna is optional for over-the-air local broadcasts on a Roku TV. Streaming apps do not require one.

No. An app may be available to install, but a paid service requires its own subscription unless the service offers a free tier or you have another eligible arrangement.

For apps that support TV-provider authentication, you may be able to sign in with provider credentials. Availability and channel access depend on the provider and service.

Can Roku replace a DVR?

Not automatically. DVR features depend on the app or live-TV service you choose, including its recording rules and storage limits. Check the service’s current terms.
