To send an internet radio program to YouTube Live, route the station’s audio into an encoder, add a video signal, then send the combined audio-video stream to YouTube using the live stream’s ingestion URL and stream key. YouTube does not accept an audio-only feed as a complete live stream: its stream-health guidance flags missing video. The exact step for getting audio out of your radio server depends on its software, operating system, and audio output.
What you need to connect
- An active YouTube channel that can go live, and a stream created or selected in YouTube Live Control Room.
- The radio program audio, accessible as an output your encoder can receive.
- An encoder that can take that audio and send both audio and video. The visual can be a suitable static graphic or another video source; it does not have to be camera footage.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the configured stream.
YouTube documents the encoder-to-YouTube part of the workflow, but internet-radio servers expose their output differently. There is no universal capture command or setting: identify how your particular station software makes its program audio available before configuring the encoder.
Connect the radio audio to an encoder
- Identify the program output. Check your radio server or playback chain for an audio output the encoder can access. Depending on the setup, that may be an output device or another supported audio source. The right route depends on the station software and operating system.
- Configure the encoder to receive that audio. Confirm that the encoder’s input meter or monitoring indicates the radio program is reaching it. Avoid routing a microphone or unrelated desktop audio by mistake.
- Add video. Select a video source in the encoder, such as an appropriate still visual or a moving visual. YouTube’s LiveStreams API reports a
noVideoStreamissue when incoming video is absent, so radio audio alone is not enough. - Check the combined output. Listen for the expected program audio and confirm the video is present before connecting to YouTube.
If you need exact audio-capture instructions, the details required are the radio-server software, operating system, and how the station currently outputs its program audio. Without those, a specific routing method would be guesswork.
Create or select the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream’s ingestion URL and stream key (also called the stream name in some YouTube/API contexts). Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- In your encoder, enter the URL and key in their separate fields if available. Some encoders instead expect them combined as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; follow that encoder’s field instructions. - Use the ingestion endpoint shown for the selected stream. If your workflow uses YouTube’s API, its primary ingestion address and stream name are available in
cdn.ingestionInfo. A backup address is available where configured.
Set the encoder for YouTube
For an ordinary live broadcast, YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP tunneled through TLS; use the exact endpoint and path supplied for the stream. YouTube’s documented RTMPS connection uses port 443 and SNI with the server hostname.

| Protocol | When it fits | Documented trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | General-purpose encoder ingestion; a suitable default for a basic radio simulcast when supported. | Encrypted RTMP. The endpoint and path must be correct; connection uses TLS on port 443 and SNI with the server hostname. |
| HLS | Encoder workflows that specifically need HLS ingestion or supported higher-end codecs. | Encrypted and supports H.264 and HEVC, but segment-based; not suited to ultra-low latency. |
| DASH | Specialized encoder workflows that need its supported codec features. | Encrypted and supports H.264 and VP9; generally has higher latency than RTMP because it is segment-based. |
For a basic internet-radio simulcast, RTMPS is usually the straightforward choice. HLS or DASH makes sense only when the encoder or production requirements call for it; the fact that the source is radio audio does not itself require either protocol.
Video, audio, and timing
- Video codec: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3 are supported options for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced guidance recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- Rate control: Use CBR. Select the video bitrate recommendation matching your resolution, frame rate, and codec in YouTube’s current encoder settings; there is no single appropriate bitrate for every stream.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance covers rates up to 60 fps. Choose a resolution and frame rate your encoder and upload connection can sustain.
Run an upload-speed check before settling on a video bitrate, leaving capacity for network variation rather than using the entire measured upload rate. YouTube automatically transcodes ingested live video into multiple output formats for viewers.

Test the feed, then start the broadcast
- Start the encoder’s output to YouTube while the selected stream is ready in Live Control Room.
- Wait for YouTube to detect the incoming feed. Review its stream health and any warnings before starting the public broadcast.
- Test with representative radio audio and the visual you plan to use. YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the eventual stream.
- Listen on the YouTube preview, check that the audio is present and intelligible, and verify the visual appears as intended.
- Start the broadcast from Live Control Room when the feed is ready, then keep monitoring stream health and messages during transmission.
Make recurring broadcasts or a continuous feed
YouTube distinguishes the stream carrying the encoder feed from the broadcast that viewers watch. For recurring programs, the API documentation describes reusing a stream across broadcasts; it also describes a 24/7 feed with a separate broadcast happening simultaneously. In the documented single-encoder pattern, each YouTube channel needs its own distinct stream.
Troubleshoot common connection problems
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no data or an inactive stream | The encoder may be pointed at a different ingestion URL, or the stream key/name may be wrong. | Confirm the selected stream in Live Control Room, then copy its current URL and key into the encoder and reconnect. |
| Connection or TLS error | Incorrect RTMPS endpoint/path, blocked or wrong port, or hostname/SNI mismatch. | Use the exact RTMPS endpoint and path; check TLS on port 443 and that SNI uses the server hostname. |
| Video appears but audio is missing | The radio output may not reach the encoder, or the selected audio codec may be unsupported. | Check the encoder’s audio input and meters, then use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. |
| Audio is present but YouTube reports missing video | The encoder is sending an audio-only stream or its video source is disabled. | Enable a video source and confirm video is included in the encoder output. |
| Buffering, warnings, or poor stream health | Upload capacity, bitrate, sample rate, or keyframe interval may not match the setup. | Recheck upload capacity and the selected YouTube recommendations for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec; verify stereo settings and keyframe timing, then monitor health messages. |
| The wrong program audio is heard | The encoder may be listening to a different device or desktop source than the radio program output. | Re-select the station’s actual audio output and make another private or unlisted test before going live. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the rights and permissions needed for every recording, song, spoken segment, image, and other material in the program. A radio server’s ability to play or transmit a track does not establish that you may rebroadcast it on YouTube. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies for your situation, and do not assume that a static image or continuous playlist changes the rights requirements.
