For an uploaded video, check the encoded file with ffprobe, then check YouTube playback after processing finishes. For a live stream, check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube Live Control Room’s detected ingest settings separately from viewer playback. These checks distinguish an encoder mismatch from delayed processing or a playback-device limitation.
Check the resolution FFmpeg actually encoded
For a resized output, FFmpeg’s scale filter sets the raster dimensions. A basic 16:9 target of 1920×1080 is -vf "scale=1920:1080". Use the dimensions appropriate to your project. If the source has a different aspect ratio, forcing an exact width and height can distort the image; decide whether to preserve the image with bars, crop it, or intentionally stretch it. FFmpeg documents aspect-ratio-preserving scale options, including force_original_aspect_ratio, in its filters documentation.
After encoding, inspect the first video stream in the actual output file:

-show_entries stream=codec_name,width,height,display_aspect_ratio,avg_frame_rate
-of json output.mp4Compare width and height with the intended output. Check display_aspect_ratio if the video is not a straightforward 16:9 image, and avg_frame_rate if frame rate is relevant to your export. This verifies the encoded file’s dimensions—not whether YouTube has completed processing it. See the ffprobe documentation for stream selection and output options.

For standard 16:9 video, YouTube identifies 1920×1080 as 1080p, 2560×1440 as 1440p, and 3840×2160 as 4K. Other aspect ratios need not use those exact raster dimensions; judge them against the intended shape. See YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.
Check YouTube playback after processing
Once the local file’s dimensions are confirmed, upload it and allow YouTube to finish processing before deciding that a high-resolution option is missing. YouTube initially processes lower-quality versions; higher qualities such as 1080p and 4K can take longer, sometimes several hours. YouTube notes that a video may appear to be missing higher qualities during that time. Processing time can vary with quality, video length, format, and traffic.

- Confirm the local raster: use
ffprobeon the file you uploaded, not an earlier intermediate or a different export. - Wait for higher-quality processing: a missing 1080p or 4K choice just after upload does not by itself show that FFmpeg encoded the wrong dimensions.
- Check playback again: use a browser or device capable of the target quality, and inspect the available quality choices in the YouTube player.
The source dimensions and the playback renditions currently available on YouTube are different facts: YouTube converts uploads to playback versions for devices and networks. The platform’s upload troubleshooting guidance explains processing delays and playback availability.
For a live stream, verify ingest separately from playback
A live stream has distinct checkpoints: FFmpeg’s configured output, the resolution YouTube detects at ingest, and the rendition a viewer can select. YouTube says it automatically detects encoder settings by default. In Live Control Room, review stream health, any messages, and the detected ingest settings; then check playback separately. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats, so a viewer’s selected rendition does not necessarily match the incoming resolution.

- Check FFmpeg’s output settings: confirm the output width, height, frame rate, and codec in the command or encoder configuration.
- Check Live Control Room: review detected stream settings and stream health rather than inferring ingest resolution from a viewer’s playback menu.
- Check viewer playback independently: allow for YouTube’s downstream transcoding and the capabilities of the playback device or network.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers detected settings, stream health, and recommended bitrate ranges. Its guidance says, “YouTube will automatically detect which encoder settings you chose,” and explains that it transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers.
Use bitrate as a supporting check, not proof of resolution
Bitrate recommendations help assess whether an upload’s encoding settings are in line with YouTube’s published guidance, but bitrate alone cannot confirm width or height. For SDR uploads, YouTube’s current recommended video bitrates, accessed in 2026, include:

YouTube defines standard frame rates in this table as 24, 25, or 30 fps, and high frame rates as 48, 50, or 60 fps. These are recommendations, not guaranteed quality thresholds or evidence that a particular playback resolution is available. Audio bitrate does not determine video resolution. - Processing is still underway: check again later; high-quality processing can take several hours.
- The uploaded file is smaller than intended: inspect the exact uploaded file with
ffprobeand compare its width and height with the target. - The video uses a non-16:9 aspect ratio: compare its dimensions and shape with the intended output instead of expecting standard 16:9 dimensions.
- The playback device or browser does not support the target quality: test with a capable browser or device.
- It is a live stream, not an upload: check detected ingest settings in Live Control Room before diagnosing viewer playback.
