To publish to YouTube through a proxy on Linux, first confirm that your encoder and proxy can carry the same connection type. For FFmpeg, proxy support depends on the installed build and protocol path; a generic proxy environment variable is not a guarantee that RTMPS is being tunneled. Use the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio, verify the proxy permits the required connection, then test the full route before going live.

What you need before configuring the route

  • A YouTube Live stream configured in Live Control Room, with its server URL and stream key.
  • An encoder that supports the publishing protocol you intend to use. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported.
  • A proxy whose protocol and access rules match the encoder’s connection. An HTTP proxy must support CONNECT to tunnel the TCP connection; SOCKS and transparent proxies work differently.
  • Permission to use the proxy and to connect to the relevant YouTube endpoint and port. Follow your network administrator’s policy.

“Through a proxy” does not identify one universal setting. In particular, setting HTTP_PROXY or adding a generic proxy flag does not prove that an RTMPS publishing connection uses that proxy. Verify the support documented for your specific encoder, installed FFmpeg build, and protocol path. [FFmpeg protocol documentation]

Get the correct YouTube publishing details

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you plan to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from that stream’s settings. Use the RTMPS URL displayed there if your encoder supports RTMPS; do not substitute a guessed hostname or assume an RTMP URL is interchangeable.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not put a real key in a shared script, public screenshot, log, or command history. If it is exposed, regenerate it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. [YouTube stream settings and keys]

YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP. A TLS-intercepting proxy can alter the connection’s security properties; where possible, use an end-to-end CONNECT tunnel and do not disclose the stream key to the proxy operator. This is a security precaution, not a claim that YouTube requires a particular proxy product. [YouTube RTMPS guidance]

Check FFmpeg and proxy compatibility

Inspect the local FFmpeg protocol help

Before building a publishing command, check the installed FFmpeg version and its local RTMP protocol options:

ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -h protocol=rtmp

FFmpeg documents RTMP, RTMPS, and tunneled RTMP variants, along with an http_proxy option for supported protocol handling. That documentation does not promise that every build or every RTMPS/proxy combination works. Use the local help and the documentation for your installed build to confirm that the proxy option applies to the protocol path you plan to use. [FFmpeg protocol documentation]

Confirm what the proxy allows

  • Identify whether it is an HTTP proxy with CONNECT, a SOCKS proxy, or a transparent system proxy. Do not treat their configuration methods as interchangeable.
  • Confirm the proxy permits a tunnel to the exact YouTube ingest endpoint and port supplied for your stream.
  • Determine whether authentication is required and whether your FFmpeg protocol path supports it.
  • Check DNS resolution, network restrictions, and TLS certificate validation as separate issues. Do not disable certificate validation to get past an error.

YouTube’s RTMPS help page suggests checking that the protocol/server is correct and trying port 443 where appropriate if you encounter an SSL error. Use the URL and settings shown in Live Control Room; do not hard-code an assumed endpoint. [YouTube RTMPS guidance]

Build and test an FFmpeg publishing command

The output structure is an input, any required encoding or stream-copy options, FLV output, and the publishing URL assembled from YouTube’s displayed server address and your key. The following is a structural template only—not a tested universal command. Replace placeholders, and use proxy syntax only if your installed FFmpeg documentation confirms it is supported for your protocol path.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT_FILE [ENCODING_OR_COPY_OPTIONS] -f flv "[YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL]/[STREAM_KEY]"

Do not paste a real key into a command that will remain in shell history or be captured by process listings, logs, or shared diagnostics. Choose a safer secret-handling method appropriate to your environment, and confirm its behavior locally. If the encoder cannot route RTMPS through your proxy, changing bitrate will not fix that compatibility problem; choose a supported encoder/proxy path instead.

Test the exact route before an event

  1. Start a private or unlisted test stream using the same Linux host, FFmpeg build, proxy, endpoint, and encoder settings intended for the real broadcast.
  2. Check that the encoder establishes the publishing connection and that YouTube’s preview receives the feed.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm that the test behaves under conditions representative of the actual event.
  4. Only after the route works should you adjust image or audio settings to address quality or stability.

YouTube recommends representative testing and monitoring stream health. [YouTube encoder settings and stream health]

Set encoder parameters for the feed

Encoder parameters affect the feed YouTube receives; they do not configure the proxy. YouTube’s guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of a particular Linux setup. [YouTube encoder settings]

Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Consult YouTube’s current table for the combination you choose, then make sure your stable upload capacity can sustain it. Use the private test and YouTube’s health feedback to identify upload or encoding issues rather than changing network settings at random.

Troubleshoot in network-to-encoder order

Symptom Check and fix
YouTube does not receive the feed Confirm the stream is enabled and that the URL and key are the matching pair copied from Live Control Room. Regenerate an exposed key and update the encoder. [YouTube stream settings]
RTMPS connection or SSL error Verify that the encoder is using the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. For the SSL issue described in YouTube’s guidance, verify the protocol/server and try port 443 where appropriate. Keep TLS validation enabled. [YouTube RTMPS guidance]
Direct publishing works, proxy publishing fails Check whether the proxy supports the required CONNECT/TCP tunnel, allows the selected endpoint and port, and handles any required authentication. Confirm that your FFmpeg build documents proxy support for the RTMPS path in use. [FFmpeg protocol documentation]
Certificate or TLS validation failure Check whether the proxy intercepts TLS and whether the certificate chain is valid for the connection. Do not solve this by disabling certificate checks; investigate the proxy route or use an end-to-end tunnel. [YouTube RTMPS guidance]
Connection works but stream health is poor Review YouTube’s preview and health messages, test upload capacity, and then tune resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to YouTube’s current codec-specific recommendations. A bitrate change does not repair an unsupported proxy configuration. [YouTube encoder settings]

When HLS is a different option

YouTube documents HLS ingestion for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. HLS has its own URL and stream-key protocol selection in the encoder; it is a separately configured ingestion mode, not an automatic fallback when an RTMPS proxy tunnel fails. Confirm that your encoder and YouTube stream settings are configured for HLS before choosing it. [YouTube HLS ingestion guidance]

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than publish a live encoder feed through your Linux proxy, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only.
